This well run hotel was the ideal location for us to visit Abbotsford and The Great Tapestry of Scotkand Gallery in Galashiels, as well as Montrose. The room we were given was enormous, with a beautiful view over the gardens towards Abbotsford and the Eildon Hills.
We ate in all three nights and there was a good choice of food to suit all tastes. Everyone was friendly and aimed to please. They did warn us there might be a bit of a wait for food because of continuing staff shortages. It never became a big issue and the quality was excellent.
The only slight problem was that we did find the room a bit on the chilly side once the sun disappeared. The one very big and modern radiator was working on full power, but because the windows weren't double glazed, it did feel a bit chilly in the evening once we retired for the night. I suspect Covid regulations meant that throws can't be provided. Not sure what the answer is to that at the moment. It won't matter in the summer months.
But apart from that we had a wonderful stay and I have already recommended it to friends.

I visited the Kingsknowes as a wedding guest and was really impressed with the venue. There were 50 guests attending and the venue was perfect for this size of wedding. The conservatory was beautiful for the ceremony. The grounds, well kept wrap around garden and views are stunning and the inside of building is full of character features. The wedding breakfast, canapes, wine and cocktails were very tasty and the bar and waiting staff service was spot on. There were young kids in our group and the venue was perfect for them. The large, enclosed grounds gave them a safe and fun place to play and they were provided with their own menu too. There were a number of guests with dietary needs and they were all individually catered for. The sunset glowed behind the conservertory at the end of the evening and made a magical backdrop for the newly wed couple to have their first dance (and only dance due to covid rules). Thank you to all the Kingsknowes team. We were told this was their second wedding since lockdown 1 and I think they did extremely well.

The Kingsknowes is definitely the best place to stay in Galashiels, but its a pity the town doesn't have more to offer! The hotel is in a perfect location on the banks of the Tweed, with decent views towards the Eildon hills. The room was large, warm and comfortable. Wifi excellent. Breakfast was also well presented and good food. All the staff were helpful and friendly. Very strange approach to Covid, all the precautions are appropriate and good, but guests at check in are handed their key in a bag with two small sterile wipes, with a request to "wipe down all hard surfaces touched before checking out". This is a most peculiar request, and I hope the paid cleaners do not expect it to happen, and we are not supposed to expect the room to have been precleaned by the previous inhabitant! However it is a good hotel overall and we would stay again.

I was unfortunate enough to be put up in this hotel for a week by my employer. The hotel itself looks beautiful from the outside, but sadly that’s where the good points end. The decor is shocking, rooms are so old fashioned with styling that one would have found in a bedsit in the early 70s. I had to endure two days worth of icy cold showers and when I protested to reception the lady told me she would speak to the manager who then as a final insult said she would offer a discounted room for a future stay, who on earth would be silly enough to return after this level of service? All I can say is avoid wherever possible there are much nicer hotels in the area!

I can not stay enough good things about the Kingsknowes. My daughter and I planned a visit to nearby Abbotsford, and we asked the staff there about hotels in row area, They said the Kingsknowes was the closest one to Abbotsfsford, so I checked our their website. I was enthralled immediately, and knew right away that this hotel would be a major part of the entertainment in the area. I was not wrong! This hotel, built as a private residence in 1869, is about as close to museum quality that I have ever seen in which I was privileged to stay. We had a first floor, twin bed room, that was lovely. It was up the lovely staircase, but we had help with our bags, and the views from the room were lovely. The wi fi did nor reach through the thick wall of our room, but there was a lovely sofa and marble mantled fireplace at the landing just outside our door, and that was a very pleasant place to use the wifi. I guess one of the biggest pluses was being able to have breakfast in the dining room, Yes, we food was excellent, with a full buffet of fruit, juices pastries, and cereal, but then you could also order a hot meal. I had the huge Scottish breakfast each morn, with eggs, mushroom, potatoes, sausage, and toast, and my daughter had the Eggs Benedict, Again the food was wonderful, but dining in the room with one of the most beautiful ceilings, with plaster, not plastic, decorations was worth the price of the hotel alone, even if their had been no food. The staff was efficient and friendly. We also had dinner both evenings in the hotel restaurant, which is a more modern build on. It was very pleasant and the food was delicious. We took a cab, for only 5 pounds, to Abbotsford, but later the staff there told us how we would walk back through a lovely path, We so enjoyed that, and it was only .3 miles. It was a joy to walk where Sir Walter Scott had trod. Yes, I would love to stay at the Kingsknowes again. I've told my daughter we needed to just be brave, rent a car, and drive around the countryside,. As a side note, I would not recommend trying to get there via public transport from Edinburgh on a Sunday, The approximately 38 miles to Galashields from Edinburgh, airport, via Waverly Station took us about 3 hours, It was Sunday, there was a rail replacement bus, etc etc . Our flight arrived at 9:30 AM, and we did not arrive at the Kingsknowes until about 1:40, due to train schedules etc. Going back on a weekday was much more time efficient, None of the travel woes, however, could take away from our pleasure from staying at the Kingsknowes.. It's worth visiting the area just to stay and eat at the Kingsknowes.

One of the very best hotels we have ever stayed in ( certainly the best in the U.K.!) . I believe that the hotel is still family owned which makes a significant difference to the attitude of the staff. All the staff we met here were genuinely helpful and caring - not the superficial pleasantries which are often the case.

We stayed in Room 14 which was spacious, light and had an incredible view through the very large window. The bed was very comfortable and the towels which were changed every day were white and fluffy . There were two settees in the room plus tea and coffee making facilities.

Breakfasts consisted of fruit, cereal, fruit juices etc for those who wanted them and then there was a choice of breakfast which was cooked to order, toast plus as much coffee or tea as required! We ate in the hotel each evening as the hotel is not in Galashiels itself which in any case had little to offer! There was a variety of dishes to choose from at very reasonable prices and again food was cooked to order.

I cannot recommend the hotel highly enough - such a refreshing change from the chain ones.
Thank you for a very pleasant stay.

We stayed here for 3 nights 2nd week in July. Our room was no. 14, and it was huge, with two sofas, a dressing table, lots of wardrobe space and spotlessly clean. This hotel has an old fashion ambience, high ceilings, and huge, tall windows. The views were fantastic over the hills.

There were coffee and tea facilities and a variety of toiletries in the bathroom which had a bath and overhead shower.

The grounds of the hotel are stunning and very well maintained. The breakfast was delicious and cooked to perfection, with lots of options to choose from

All the staff here are top-notch, however, we’d like to give a special shout to LENE (pronounced: Lena) who served breakfast. Absolutely nothing was too much trouble – Thank you Lene ♥

We would definitely go back – Couldn’t recommend this hotel enough!

Myself and my partner booked a long weekend at the Kingsknowes hotel, Although we got the impression it was a bit further out we weren’t disappointed. It is situated behind a quiet housing estate although we must remember the marvellous Hotel was there before the housing. From the minute we stepped inside we were blown away it is just stunning, very warm and welcoming. Our room was small but spotless and had everything we needed it was cleaned daily. What can I say about the food 10/10 and great value the breakfasts are superb fresh and plenty of it. You MUST try the eggs florentine its delicious. We would definitely be back it is so peaceful we didn’t hear a thing also the king sized bed was super comfy. The breakfast staff were so lovely polite and helpful nothing was too much trouble. If you are in or around Galashiels this hotel is a MUST. The Scottish Borders are stunning and This hotel is totally magical the decor and feeling of this place is excellent. We loved it.

This hotel is a diamond in the rough. Although the decor of the hotel needs modernisation and the rooms updated, the staff were wonderful very efficient and nothing was too much trouble. The dining experience was first class, fresh ingredients and beautifully cooked both breakfast and evening meal. Would have preferred fresh berries and grapes at breakfast but that is a minor complaint. Would recommend this hotel for anyone exploring the Scottish borders, Edinburgh is only 40 odd mile away so everything within easy commuting distance.

Arrived and were met by the loveliest lady, who made us feel so welcome. The room was lovely and comfortable. The shower was fab and water hot, even for 4 females all having showers after our 10 mile hike.
We pre booked dinner and wasn't disappointed, the food was amazing. Every staff member was friendly, smiling and proficient.
We are definitely coming back.
Thank you Kingsknowe staff
