Called up to book a baby shower back in January. The owner of the hotel was very friendly and booked everything in for 3rd March. This included the hire of the room from 1-5 and a buffer at £10 per person. Called up 3 weeks before to confirm everything was still ok with the booking and was advised yes looking forward to seeing you, also checked it was ok to arrive early to set up which they also advise was ok. Arrived yesterday at 12:30 to set up to be told the event had been cancelled, owner advised we called up and cancelled advised this was not the case they said they messaged on Facebook to confirm this. Advised we have had no message on Facebook. Advised them they had my number why did they not call to advise this. Both owners become very rude. Asked if we could still have the room as we have 30 people arriving in 1 hour they advised yes you can have the room but we have no staff to make a buffet for you. They said we would also still need £50 for the room advised this was ok. They advised we will need the room back in 2 hours. Took this option as we had the soon to be mummy and guests arriving to this location in 1 hour. We then arranged the buffet our selfs which was very stressful with no help from the owners just the local supermarkets. The owners advised they would come to the bar and offer drinks, we had to keep going through and asking them to come on the bar as they keep walking away. They also advised it was a min charge of £5 to use a card again this was not advised at booking, so no guests were aware of this. At the end of the event we cleaned up and went through to pay. The owners were very rude. Gave some feedback to try and ensure this didn’t happen again to someone else and this was meet with more rudeness. They then advised it was £50 plus VAT we explained we were told it was £50 they said it’s normally company’s who book this room so need to add VAT advised this is ok but we were not advised this then they charged for teas and coffee that they put on this took the total cost to £87 when we were advised it was £50. This hotel is a beautiful hotel but it is not managed correctly and the owners are very rude with no care toward their guests. I will not be returning to this hotel and will be advised other people of what had happened to us as we do not want anyone else to have to deal with the stress and the rudeness of the owners of this hotel.

Stayed at The Balcary House Hotel as two couples from Friday to Sunday whilst attending a family wedding in Hawick. What a fabulous hotel . We booked two rooms and were allocated rooms 4 and 7. Both rooms were gorgeous. Everything about them oozed luxury. Large rooms with large bathrooms, really well decorated with quality furniture and fittings and most importantly everything was spotless. The large beds were so comfortable. We were made so welcome by David upon our arrival and from then on, every member of staff was polite, helpful and very professional in their approach to us whenever we had contact. The girls serving at breakfast obviously take great pride in the jobs as they were attentive, very smart in their appearance and although they were very busy, nothing seemed too much trouble. Whilst getting ready for the wedding we even had a member of staff knock on our bedroom door and ask if there was anything we needed . A lovely considerate touch. The breakfast at the Balcary was superb. Freshly cooked to order, well prepared and presented and plenty of it. At check out, Susan told us how busy the hotel had been throughout the year. That doesn't surprise me. The place is, in my opinion, just perfect. Perfect in location, and in everything we expect in a quality hotel. We will be back.

2 rooms - the Lodge and the King room - both absolutely gorgeous. Dog friendly, wonderful breakfast and lovely staff. Lodge gives off ski chalet vibes, clean, cosy , spacious and all newly decorated.

We were in Hawick for the AGM of the Campaign for Borders Rail and had decided to make a weekend of it. This hotel was recommended by someone who lives in Hawick, and it is is excellent. The decor as one enters is very classy and this continues beyond the public areas, which is often not the case. We were welcomed warmly. Our room was comfortable, large, warm and spacious, and we were delighted when we opened the curtains to see we had a balcony with a view onto a lovely secluded garden. Sadly it was pouring with rain so we didn't go out to sample it! Not being fans of cooked breakfasts we stuck to cereal and toast, which were both fine. The only criticism we have is that the loo seat was loose, and there was no shower mat for a bath tub, so we used a hand towel. We reported both and were assured that they will be dealt with.

We had toured Scotland from Glasgow all around Skye, did the Northern Scotland 500 as well as the Cairngorms, and took 18 days to do it. We are happy that Belcary House was our last night in Scotland, because out of 18 Hotels, Lodges, and B & B's, without question this was the most unwelcome, unfriendly, and unhelpful reception we encountered. The gentleman at the desk acted very put upon and bothered, by our arrival. Fortunately, our opinion of Scottish people as especially kind, and welcoming was already established long before meeting this gentleman. An ambassador for Scotland he is not, and, by the looks of his responses to other TripAdvisor comments, likely he doesn't care either. Ironically, he had a plaque on his desk alluding to himself as a"grumpy old man". This is not something to be proud of by an establishment that depends on good will of patrons. The room was adequate, although there was a shortage of plugs for our hearing aids and computer charging needs and was one of the smallest in size during our tour. The advertised description overrated the room and its furnishings. The bed in our room was absolutely not king-sized by any standard dimensions as was advertised. We thought we had booked the best of the offered rooms, but the desk gentleman said Booking.com was to blame for our not getting what we wanted or expected. When we wanted to upgrade, he said the Hotel was full. This did not appear to be true as the parking lot had plenty of space and upper rooms were dark. We did enjoy the shower and plenty of hot water. Wifi was difficult to connect to because the gentleman at the desk didn't know the passwords. The room was heated to a comfortable temperature for the early part of the evening. The TV worked well. The bed was comfortable although smaller than expected. Breakfast was very good and Vicky and her helpers were genuinely, cheerful, kind and efficient. They should receive praise for the way they do their work. In summary, although I hate to write negative reviews, we feel we should warn others about this pretentious, dreadfully overrated, misadvertised, and overpriced accommodation. Room 7 is not a room to enjoy.

Nice hotel but info on booking.com listed it as a la carte which doesn’t exist. Hawick is remote so food options not great. Families with kids were bringing in pizzas from the nearest town. Hotel stated they were not responsible for info contained on booking.com ….well who is then ?

We stayed here for 2 nights. This is a lovely old house set in extensive grounds with mature trees. Only a 20 minute walk into town and free parking. The breakfast was good and the serving staff pleasant. The room was quite big, overlooking the garden and the bed was very comfortable. Like others have said the bathroom is big, but the sink is tiny. There is no information in the book in the room, apart from the history of the house. We never saw anyone in the bar or the lounge and we told nothing about them. Overall we really enjoyed our stay, but there is room for improvements.

Lovely and quiet boutique hotel on a scenic property. Free parking. Very close to town centre of Hawick. Full hot breakfast. Large room. Close to river tweed and parks. Efficient check in and out. Areas for improvement: very reserved staff. Not much of a warm reception.

This house/ hotel was absolutely lovely. We went there with our two children and our dog, and had a wonderful stay. After check in, we had a drink from the bar with lemon cake for the kids and sat outside in the lovely green space. The room was lovely and comfortable. And the breakfast was amazing with lots of different options, including for us as vegetarian's. It was a lovely alternative to the chain hotels, and had loads of charm and thoughtful details. We would highly recommend this as a wonderful place to stay on the Scottish borders, and en route between the highlands and England as well.
