A group of 8 of us arrived qt the restaurant for our 7pm booking. It was quiet with only around 3 tables filled, but decorated nicely, welcoming and the waitress was lovely. Sadly, it went down hill from there. We did not receive our starter until almost 8pm. It was quite nice but nothing spectacular. We then had another loooong wait for our main course, with other people's food accidentally being brought to our table rubbing it in a little. When the food eventually came it looked promising, but unfortunately most people's main courses were cold. It's such a shame as the place has so much potential, but I wouldn't be able to recommend.

Booked in via the telephone, the lady I spoke to was professional and very upbeat, unfortunately there were only twin rooms available- The reason for our stay was to be near family in the village - I chose to go ahead with the booking. The rate is not inclusive of breakfast. When we arrived a gentleman served us and seemed to be new however very polite , he asked his mother to show us to our room - On first impression the room was clean and well decorated however when taking a closer look the quality of the bed linen was very very poor. ( Not cotton )The pillows and duvet were not to the standards you would expect for the price . The mattresses on the beds were thin and very uncomfortable. The towels were small and rough ! The shower room was clean however the shower was awful the water trickled out ! We booked in for three nights, we left early in the morning so did not sample bfast - we came back the room late in the evening the room stunk of food , it had been serviced however the towels were not renewed and remained in the bottom of the shower where the instruction card had told me to leave them !! The second night the room was not serviced and we had to ask for clean towels - The third night family came to have a meal , the pub was not busy there were a few people dinning the food was slow in coming out and again poor quality we did highlight this to the owners, who did not seem interested , the food was also overpriced. We found out that evening that the owners were new in post however had a history of running pubs - My partner went back to the room and again it had not been serviced and we had to ask for clean towels again !! There are hotels in Jedburgh and Kelso offering rooms with breakfast included at the same price. The horse and hounds need to up game and attention to detail. I was really disappointed with the stay.

Beautiful little place ,nicely decorated ,good tasty food . Disappointed to find that the bar called last orders at 9.30pm especially as we had travelled to meet friends there ,3 that were also staying at the pub and 4 others with their 2 teenage boys that stayed at the campsite next door . One of the friends staying at the pub had a 16 year old daughter and wasn’t allowed to join us in the evening and so was trapped in her room all night .( not much of a holiday for her unfortunately) Our room had a awful mattress and so we had some very uncomfortable nights , we did turn the mattress but it didn’t make much difference, we stayed in room 8 , Our friend who was in room 3 also had the same problem. We felt that for £80 a night and not having a good night sleep plus the bar closing early at night that it was a little expensive as breakfast wasn’t included in that price either . Shame really as it’s such a lovely place with lovely friendly people . We didn’t complain about the beds as the hotel was fully booked so they wouldn’t of been able to move us .

Spacious room with a very comfy bed. Staff are friendly and helpful. The meals are excellent quality, beautifully presented and delicious. The bar is welcoming. Very clean and tidy and set in a beautiful location. Our room was a little over warm but a fan was provided. We would love to stay there again.

Absolutely fantastic food, ordered the special stew and also chicken balmoral. Service was excellent. Would definitely recommend. We also had our dog with us which was not a problem and had a wee table at the back and a bowl of water provided. We were staying in Hawick and definitely worth the 15 minute drive.

The service was incredible. Stayed over in our motor home. The meal was incredible I had grilled fish. Cooked perfectly and my other half had steak and Ale pie oh my goodness the gravy. And for pudding I can honestly say the syrup sponge was the best I’d ever had. Highly rate this fabulous place and we are fussy. But nothing to mark down here. Also had butterfly rains to start yum yum so so good and as I said the service was fantastic. Xx oh my goodness the toilets are stunning too and there’s a child’s toilet seat witching the main toilet seat. How thoughtful is that. Thank you to all the staff but especially the fabulous Euan you are a star !!⭐️🌟💯 recommend this hotel/ restaurant x

My husband and I visited for a one night stay; we would have stayed another night if not for work commitments. From the moment we arrived, we were made very welcome by David, the owner. We arrived early but our room was ready. Very comfortable and clean, with a lovely view of the beer garden and surrounding countryside. We loved the VERY comfortable bed, the complimentary toiletries, and the steam room/shower! We had a drink in the bar with some locals, then ventured out to the lovely beer garden to have a couple more drinks in the sun with some bikers, who were camping nereby. Dinner was excellent. We retired to our very comfortable room to watch a bit of television before having an amazing sleep. Breakfast was cooked to order and again, delicious. Everything was excellent and we shall be visiting again. There is lots to see and do in the surrounding area, steeped in history. Thank you David and Dawn, we shall see you again. Michelle and Chris

I haven’t written a review for many years but, the Horse and Hounds is such a great place anyone travelling through the Boarders should know what a great place this is. The staff are friendly without being ‘in your face’. The room we had was modern, clean and functional and the beds comfortable, if a little noisy. The restaurant offered a limited menu but our dinner was beautifully cooked and the wine list, whilst short, was very well priced. Breakfast was great and I was able to indulge in one of my favourite dishes which was poached eggs on haggis. My wife’s breakfast omelet was light and fluffy and as good if not better than most of those had by us in rated hotels across the world. In short if you need to stay overnight in the Boarders this is the place. I look forward to our next journey North.
