Had a bit of an extended stay at the G&A during the summer. The hotel is perfectly located right in the centre of town. It has a generous parking lot reserved only for hotel guests, which is wonderful as is very hard to find available parking spots in the bustling downtown streets especially in the summer. All the staff (especially Kaylie) and the owner/manager Graham, were super friendly and always very helpful. Being an international traveler in July, I needed to self quarantine for the first days and all the staff were super nice in helping me feel comfortable and getting my meals without leaving the room. I was very grateful for that. I had a single bed because I travelled alone and stayed in one of the smaller single rooms, it was very comfy: the sheets were soft, mattress was comfortable, duvet and pillow were fluffy and really conducive to great sleeps. They have much bigger rooms that look beautiful and I would choose one of those if I get to go back with my family. The room was also quiet and even despite there being a wedding on the weekend, I couldn't hear a thing. The water pressure and hot water for the shower was wonderful (which is not always the case in some hotels). The decor is quirky, with character and old world charm. The restaurant/bar and the beer garden are great spots to be. Food was lovely, with quite a few vegetarian options, I particularly enjoyed the avocado feta salad and the chocolate brownie. They are also dog-friendly which is wonderful. I had a great stay. Thank you so much G&A!

The hotel has the advantages of being cheap, right in the centre of town and with plenty of free onsite parking. But the hotel is tired and desperately in need of refurbishment. Breakfasts are no-frills and although we had one evening meal there, we went elsewhere on the other evenings. Our room was large and comfortable enough but with draughty window and old-fashioned fittings. No wifi in the bedrooms - wifi signal was only available within a few metres of the reception desk. For travellers with accessibility issues, the hotel would be problematic - lots of stairs and internal steps and didn't seem to be a lift.

Very disappointed from when we arrived at this hotel. The barmaid/receptionist was very abrupt that checked us in and gave no information about breakfast or meals etc. We then made our way to our bedroom which besides being very tired like the rest of the hotel - needed a serious clean! We decided to eat out which was definitely a good choice. Had one further encounter with the same staff member - not helpful in the least. Breakfast does not start until 8am although it was later as the waitress arrived at our table out of breath to take our order! No orange juice or cornflakes or marmalade - basic items and the breakfast room was a function room that was most unwelcoming. The breakfast waitresses were pleasant and efficient. A review of standards and a good clean is seriously required.

Stayed here middile of last month (August). It was a lovely hotel - the staff were great too. Food was really good, breakfast was really good. Was sad to have to leave a day early but once again staff were great. Love to go again Definate a 5*.

We were supposedly staying for the first night of our St Cuthbert's Way walk, but when we tried to check in they couldn't find our reservations. They tried to blame our travel company, but when I pointed out that I had phoned personally two months ago to confirm with them our reservations, and how many were in our party, and again a month later to book a table for dinner, they were lost for an answer, but changed their excuse for not happening us booked in and no rooms being avaiable to IT problems! They then said they would sort something with our travel company. As I had no faith in them I rang our the company directly, who had already started to find a solution. While we waited for the hotel to spark, we sat in the hotel bar and ordered drinks, which we paid for. Some time later the duty manager appeared and told us he could do nothing for us. Fortunately, Mac's, our travel company, had found us a place to stay and made all arrangements. They were brilliant and what a contrast to the George. We left with a mumbled, half hearted, apology, and not even an offer to pay for our drinks! Terronle service due to very poor management and none existent customer care or concern.
