Stayed in the Triple Room (117) with two other friends when we were visiting Melrose for the weekend to do Run the Borders trail race. For two nights stay we each paid around £80 which included breakfast (buffet and cooked breakfast). I was a bit concerned having read some of the reviews on here. Let's not get around the fact that the hotel in general is in need of a a refurb and our room was a bit dated. However, it was clean, functional and suited us for what we needed it for the weekend. We went to the bar both nights and it has a warm atmosphere with some nice local beers. Found the staff to be friendly and accommodating. The breakfast had a small buffet plus there were cooked breakfast options available. The private car park was very handy too. Overall value for money. There aren't many places you can get bed and breakfast these days for £40 a night.

We chose the Delux Double Room with Bath at £125 per night. The room was large however the bathroom was quite small with no shelves so toilet bags etc were stored on top of the cistern or narrow window cill. No toiletries were in the room so we had to get these from reception along with a hair drier. Breakfast was ok but tea and coffee are dispensed from large flasks and didn’t taste very fresh. Hotel decor is a bit dated with carpets a little worn and stained in places also windows in our street facing room were single glazed, luckily were early risers so noise wasn’t an issue however on a warm summer night opening the windows may be an issue noise wise. Having read the reviews before booking our expectations weren’t very high however we were a little disappointed in the overall experience and wouldn’t return. On a positive note staff were very friendly and helpful.

Excellent location in the very center of the village. Shops and cafes nearby. The abbey is a few minutes' walk from the hotel. Kind, helpful staff. A delicious cooked traditional Scottish breakfast. There is no wi-fi in the room, it is available only next to the reception. The price for the hotel is too high. The bathroom is in a very poor condition. The shower hose must be held with both hands, otherwise it will not function and water will not come out.

Arrived at this lovely Hotel on Friday 2nd Feb 2024 after a few days in Edinburgh. Stayed for the weekend. Front of house was great, as we were part of a larger group we had originally booked a twin room for myself and wife and also my daughter had he own. Front of house offered us a double room instead and also discounted my daughters as she was in twin room on her how. Bar area is great and looks out on to the small high street. Rooms very clean and spacious wow so much room. Staff really polite and chatty. Breakfast was great and nice to have Haggis and Lorne sausage on your breakfast. Plenty of choice on the menu for all 12 of us when we ate Saturday night. Overall very good and would definitely return and stay again

We checked in after a 7 hour car journey and it was obvious our room had not been cleaned. The bathroom was filthy and I had to clean it myself before we could use it. The previous guests rubbish was still in the bin and the toilet had not been flushed or cleaned and the sink was covered in dirty soap scum and toothpaste. There were cobwebs everywhere! We had no towels so I had to go down to reception to get some and was told our room had been left off the cleaning list but if the beds were made they were probably clean so we just hoped that we weren’t sleeping in the previous guests dirty beds. We went to make a cup of tea and the previous guests dirty mugs were on the tray. I couldn’t be bothered to walk to reception again so we decided to wait until they were exchanged for clean mugs the next day. The dirty mugs never got taken away for the whole week we were there and we never had clean mugs yet we did have more milks and biscuits which we obviously didn’t need without clean mugs! We did get clean towels on our beds every other day but that was the only thing that was done for us. We think it was not worth the £100 per night we paid for the room. We definitely will not be staying there again!

Room was very clean, dust on top of tv and picture frames. Bathroom spotless. Towels are soft and fluffy, bed linen was spotless. In my room, double bed wardrobe, bedside tables and dressing table with mirror, full sized mirror on the wall. Exactly what I needed. Decor fits the room and was pleasant. Only flaws - no WiFi in rooms and the bathroom lino had lifted from the floor leaving a bump. Breakfast was good, breakfast room layout a bit strange, not much room for walking to and from the cereal/juice/hot drinks/toaster table. But I suppose that may have been because everyone seemed to go for breakfast at the same time. Staff have all been lovely and very helpful. Good value for money, free on site parking is a bonus especially in a town centre! Thank you G&A!

I really hate to leave negative reviews and I did first write directly to the hotel after our stay to politely detail some of the issues and provide photos, but I never heard back. We stayed just one night as we had booked tickets for Melrose Abbey and then Rosslyn Chapel next morning. We ate in the restaurant which was fine for dinner. But the room was awful. There was a bad odor and many stains on the furniture and carpets. Gashes in the walls. Mold in the bathroom, and a broken bath door. Shower did not work. We are experienced travelers and have put up with some less than satisfactory rooms in the past, but compared to others in the same price range during our 23-day trip in Scotland, this was the worst room of our trip. I think it is the worst room I have stayed in anywhere in at least 15 years. Breakfast in the morning was free, but mostly inedible; I had a sausage patty that was so tough and overcooked I could not cut it with a metal knife. We tried to find someone in the morning to express our concerns to, but no one was at the desk or anywhere else. I would have given just one star, mostly because of the lack of the hotel's response to my email, but upped it to two because honestly, the dinner and dining room service was decent.

Had a bit of an extended stay at the G&A during the summer. The hotel is perfectly located right in the centre of town. It has a generous parking lot reserved only for hotel guests, which is wonderful as is very hard to find available parking spots in the bustling downtown streets especially in the summer. All the staff (especially Kaylie) and the owner/manager Graham, were super friendly and always very helpful. Being an international traveler in July, I needed to self quarantine for the first days and all the staff were super nice in helping me feel comfortable and getting my meals without leaving the room. I was very grateful for that. I had a single bed because I travelled alone and stayed in one of the smaller single rooms, it was very comfy: the sheets were soft, mattress was comfortable, duvet and pillow were fluffy and really conducive to great sleeps. They have much bigger rooms that look beautiful and I would choose one of those if I get to go back with my family. The room was also quiet and even despite there being a wedding on the weekend, I couldn't hear a thing. The water pressure and hot water for the shower was wonderful (which is not always the case in some hotels). The decor is quirky, with character and old world charm. The restaurant/bar and the beer garden are great spots to be. Food was lovely, with quite a few vegetarian options, I particularly enjoyed the avocado feta salad and the chocolate brownie. They are also dog-friendly which is wonderful. I had a great stay. Thank you so much G&A!

We stayed here as a group at the start of our walk of the St Cuthbert's Way and it was a perfectly good base for the start of our walk. It wasn't super-luxurious and some of the rooms were a bit "tired", but what we got was reasonable for the price we paid. On the upside, the staff who we dealt with were very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was absolutely excellent, the bar was a nice place for a quiet drink and the location (right in the centre of town, but quiet so long as you have a back room) was really good. All in all, if you are looking for high-end luxury this probably isn't your place, but if you just want a fairly-priced place to stay in Melrose, and a good breakfast, it's absolutely fine

My wife and I stayed here on the 9th September 2022,despite asking for a ground floor room as my wife has a disability none was available on arrival, however the lovely young lady on reception found us a suitable first floor room. The room was large ,clean and comfortable and we had a good nights sleep in a very soft and comfortable bed. We never ate in house as we had made other arrangements however the breakfast was first class, all the usual on the plate. The hotel is old and could do with some renovations but where to start with 32 bedrooms. Would we stay here again? YES,we would and recommend it.
