Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Room filthy and tatty . Hole with paper falling off in bathroom. Behind radiator pipes in bathroom were thick with hair. Fire door outside room continually banged during stay as mechanism at top broken . Very poor breakfast. Wasn’t expensive but such poor value for money.

We went to the bar in the hotel 2 days in a row, the young girl in the bar was very friendly, and made a fuss of our dog too. Good selections of beers, we also had food which was very good. We returned the next day to watch the rugby, had lunch, a few drinks, then ordered supper, well I can’t fault anything, well done guys keep it up 👍

Arrived at this lovely Hotel on Friday 2nd Feb 2024 after a few days in Edinburgh. Stayed for the weekend. Front of house was great, as we were part of a larger group we had originally booked a twin room for myself and wife and also my daughter had he own. Front of house offered us a double room instead and also discounted my daughters as she was in twin room on her how. Bar area is great and looks out on to the small high street. Rooms very clean and spacious wow so much room. Staff really polite and chatty. Breakfast was great and nice to have Haggis and Lorne sausage on your breakfast. Plenty of choice on the menu for all 12 of us when we ate Saturday night. Overall very good and would definitely return and stay again

Stayed at this hotel for 1 night. Booked a single room and was given a double room on arrival, the room was amazing looking on to the main street and melrose abby. The bed was very comfortable and room quiet plenty of biscuits coffee tea milk sugar. The staff were exceptionally friendly and service very good. The bar has been refurbished and is very comfortable and stylish, breakfast was amazing i chose scrambled eggs on toast but their is a large choice on offer. The location of this hotel is ideal for shops and convenience stores and hospital. Also for sightseeing as melrose is central for visiting nearby towns and villages, nothing seems far away. I do recommend this hotel it is steeped in history and in a beutifull part of the country.

Another very good meal but this time with very slow service. We did arrive early and placed our order prior to the chef’s arrival (5 minutes) which did seem to cause a bit of an issue, but putting aside the wait for the starter and main course it was a very good meal and just what we were expecting. Many thanks to all.

Lots of good things about staying here. Excellent central location & large car park made arrival easy. We received a warm welcome & help with luggage. The room was a little tired but clean & comfy, bed excellent, good shower. Beer & breakfast both very good!

Very disappointed with my stay - - very noisy room, could hear others in hotel - no hairdryer in room - on checkin I advised that I would have to leave before breakfast started - I asked if anywhere else would be open, and was advised no - I was as told that a breakfast bag would be left for me at reception in the morning, needless to say no bag, and when I left the hotel I found 3 places within 50mtrs that I could get breakfast !?! - hotel decor very tired - especially the bathroom and carpets. I won’t stay again

Room was very basic, although the bed was comfortable. The shower room needed somewhere to put toiletries and hang towels. Breakfast was later than stated (we wanted to get away straight after breakfast) and not very appetising. On the plus side the price was reasonable and the car park was free. Would not return.

We checked in after a 7 hour car journey and it was obvious our room had not been cleaned. The bathroom was filthy and I had to clean it myself before we could use it. The previous guests rubbish was still in the bin and the toilet had not been flushed or cleaned and the sink was covered in dirty soap scum and toothpaste. There were cobwebs everywhere! We had no towels so I had to go down to reception to get some and was told our room had been left off the cleaning list but if the beds were made they were probably clean so we just hoped that we weren’t sleeping in the previous guests dirty beds. We went to make a cup of tea and the previous guests dirty mugs were on the tray. I couldn’t be bothered to walk to reception again so we decided to wait until they were exchanged for clean mugs the next day. The dirty mugs never got taken away for the whole week we were there and we never had clean mugs yet we did have more milks and biscuits which we obviously didn’t need without clean mugs! We did get clean towels on our beds every other day but that was the only thing that was done for us. We think it was not worth the £100 per night we paid for the room. We definitely will not be staying there again!

Just a short review to say we thought the G & A had seen better days. It's run down and dated. Our room was too small for 2 adults sharing who aren't a couple. I hope they can invest and improve so that they can continue to receive guests in the border town with a beautiful Abbey.
