Detailed Reviews
From contacting the hotel initially Murray (the new owner) was very helpful. We booked for 10 of us, at a good price complete with heated bike store and bike wash. The rooms albeit basic, were clean & beds very comfortable. We had laminate flooring in our room, which, given the nature of the hotel is a brilliant idea. A few things that need attention; our shower/bath converter in the tap, heating in rooms seemed to go off during the night, this time of the year we could have done with it ticking over, but totally understand repairs & renewals cannot be sorted overnight. It takes time & money.
We ate in the hotel restaurant 2 nights, it did not disappoint, there was plenty of choice (not an extensive menu, but that is preferable) the food was piping hot, hot plates & no lengthy wait. Breakfast the same even gluten free.
The bar is well stocked has a good choice of gins & quality tonics.
It was nice to see Murray in attendance It’s very rare to see a hotel owner usually. Nothing was too much trouble for him or the lovely staff. We will definitely stay there again. Keep doing what you’re doing Murray, it works.

My first stay this weekend, and I am pleased to say it’s an excellent hotel that is literally set up for mountain bikers. It is right next door to Glentress, so close to inners, goodie etc too, it has communal area bike charging for e-bikes which is a nice touch, it offers great breakfast, dinner and evening meal in their on site restaurant which has indoor and outdoor seating, there are bike washing facilities and even secure bike storage too. what more can you ask for? Oh yes, comfy en-suite rooms with showers of course. In fact, if your bike breaks, they even have on site e-bike hire. Absolutely perfect.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Glentress Hotel. The owners and staff were very welcoming and friendly, they really could not have done more for us. The room was very clean and breakfast was excellent. The location is fantastic, right at the bottom of the trails so all we needed to do was grab our bikes out of the very secure storage and head up to the trails. We were delighted by the storage facility available for our use.
A special mention should be given to Murray - his local knowledge of where to ride and where to eat was amazing. He was very welcoming and was happy to have a good chat with us - a genuinely nice person who is interested in other people.
We would 100% recommend anyone to stay here. Looking forward to staying here again!

To begin the younger staff were somewhat welcoming enough, however the owner of the hotel made the experience an outright nightmare. Accusatory and disrespectful, he had made a multitude of false accusations at our party and ruined the stay to be frank. One morning we were served breakfast at 11:15 by staff, and the next we were denied any at 10:15 by the owner who claimed that breakfast ended at 10. Even if this was true, consistency doesn’t hurt and we could have been informed when we checked in.
Next, the rooms were far below our expectations. Don’t be fooled by the lovely inviting images on their website. Carpets were muddy and dirty, poor attempts at cleaning the underside of the beds were revealed when we found crisp wrappers and socks under the beds. The bedsheets also had questionable yellow stains which was very off putting.
The bathroom unfortunately wasn’t any better, the showhead believe it or not was held up with tape and the rail for the shower curtain was completely rusted over. I can understand running a hotel during times of cost of living crisis can be difficult, but i would consider up keeping some of the basic amenities in the rooms to be quite a high priority.
I’m disappointed in general with our stay and as a young person in the community it was a shame to feel so unwelcomed in this hotel. What i noticed from reading some other low ratings were that the owner never seems to apologise. It’s as if it was always the writers fault, what ever happened to the customer was always right? Even if he was in the right, he still could try to sound more professional and polite. I can expect the owner to reply with some more amusing accusations but i urge anyone reading to take one thing away from my review, please save your money and take your stay somewhere else. There are plenty airbnbs and hotels situated peebles where i am certain you will be treated much better and enjoy your stay at more.

Response from Alexandra Nisbet, Owner at The Glentress Hotel
Responded 14 Nov 2022
Thank you again for giving us the opportunity to respond to you Alex. My husband replied to the other member of your party (as below). As the other owner and Director of the hotel, it is obvious to me that you hid in your rooms as I did not encounter you at all during your stay with us (apart from to clear up the take away boxes you littered our parking area with). We are heartened that you will will not return. I am saddened that you felt the need to review our family run business in this way however unsurprised. I hope you re-read and reflect on the points below and become more well rounded individuals as you mature and continue on your life journey. Please be more respectful to other hoteliers on future exeats. Regards, Alexandra Nisbet- Owner Your party were supposed to be 3 but you added an additional person without consent and lied consistently about this. No wonder you found the room cramped. This was why you essentially hid in your room for 2 days and did your best to subvert pretty much every policy we have: 1. Only food and drinks purchased on site are supposed to be consumed on site, breakfast is between 8-10am (you turned up at 11:45am) and as license holders we need to be responsible for your alcohol consumption. 2. Residents are asked to lock the door after hours for everyone’s security. You left it wide open both nights. 3. Residents are asked to check out at 10am, I had to wake you up and ask you to leave at 9:55am. 4. We ask residents to not take take away to rooms for hygiene and recycling reasons. You ignored this consistently except when we caught you trying to sneak it in and offered you plates and cutlery to sit outside. You repaid us by throwing your rubbish round most of the exterior of the building. 5. Not content with denigrating the exterior of the hotel, you left your room in a frankly disgusting state. Our house keeping team (who have many years experience) said it was one of the worst clean up operations they have ever had to deal with and took them over an hour and a half to make the room habitable again. From talking to you it seemed you had made your way down from Edinburgh where you study. You should be frankly ashamed of yourselves and have a long hard look at your entitled, disrespectful behaviour at a family run hotel which was full of families enjoying half term. I hope by reflection you’ll consider becoming nicer human beings upon your ascent to adulthood. You might consider apologising to your parents as a first point of penance for wasting the vast sums of money they have mistakenly spent on your education.

We visited the Glentress Hotel (again!) for a meet at the local Glentress trails.
First of all the setting, situated at the base of the Peel Centre trail centre you are a two minute cycle to the beginning of the waymarked mountain bike trails. It’s 4 miles ride to the Golfie. Genuinely couldn’t be more convenient.
As mountain bikers we usually have to tip toe around hotels who don’t properly cater for you, your bike and your frequently muddy clothes.
Not so here, the owners cycle, the staff cycle, the people who come here cycle…I think you get the idea.
The rooms are basic but exactly what we needed, hot shower and comfy beds.
If you stay for a proper meal the food is ace, I had one of the best pies I have had in a very long time, the breakfast is exceptional…although I will have to wean myself off a full Scottish everyday!
The bar were serving some local ale (Tempest) which was very very good.
The bike wash and secure lock up were a god send and the staff were genuinely so interested in your day you couldn’t but help recount your outings
If you have an activity based holiday planned in Peebles don’t look anywhere else.
If you are riding the trail centre make use of the cafe afterwards, you won’t be disappointed.
Thanks to Murray, Alex, Callum and Laura for making our stay the break we needed!
See you all again soon.

Just returned from my second stay here, the first time was purely MTB related and this time I took my wife and kids for a weekend in the Tweed Valley. I did take my bike and managed to get a lap of Glentress in (thanks Murray - the definition of above and beyond 👍). The place is just great. Geared up for mountain biking. Secure bike storage, bike wash facilities, somewhere to dry your wet gear. The hospitality is second to none here and the food is fantastic. The cake and snacks from the cafe are great, especially when eaten out on the terrace in the sunshine. I'll be going back a third time in September for some more MTB action up and down the valley. Thanks to Murray and all the staff who made our stay so pleasant. See you all soon 🤘

Brilliant stay with this hotel again. Perfect set up for anyone riding bikes in the Tweed Valley - providing storing, charging and cleaning facilities. I've also previously hired an ebike which was fuss free. On both stays (Nov 2022 and April 2023) we have ended up eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel restaurant because it's great food every time. A varied and well priced menu for the huge portions and high standard. The breakfast included in your stay really sets you up for a day out on the trails and they don't mind if you return back muddy for lunch in the cafe, or even better on the terrace if the sun is shining (with views of the hills and castle, classic Scotland). All of the staff are friendly and laid back, and will give you advice and directions for the local area. We can't fault the place and look forward to our next stay.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Glentress Hotel.
The front of house team is really welcoming and Alex and Murray will give you loads of info about the local area. My husband is a mountain biker and the location could not be better for anyone who wants to make the most of the Glentress trails. MTB is not my thing but the countryside is great for walkers and I enjoyed local tourist attractions so would definitely recommend as a place to visit if you enjoy being outdoors.
You will not go hungry at The Glentress Hotel. Good cooked breakfast options to set you up for a day of activities and our dinners at the hotel were delicious. If you want a change of scene there is plenty in Peebles too.
We’ll certainly be back.

Firstly this is the very first time I have ever felt the need to write a review on any resteraunt but the fact we just paid £11 each for very soggy mushy veggie burger the likes of Mcdonald burger but worse with a few pieces of lettuce on the dude what was seemingly the "salad".. We had asked for extra salad as we weren't having the chips offered with it. They did come out with a few more pieces of green lettuce for us when I mentioned that wasn't really a "salad" no tomatoes no cucumber as you would usually expect in regular a salad never mind one where they are charging £11 for a white bun soggy mushy burger. What's was worse though was the response given by the manager whfn I complained... "well that's just how they are made" walked out still hungry and £27 lighter on the purse. What is with these people who have restaurants yet no nothing about food!!

Response from Murray Nisbet, Owner at The Glentress Hotel
Responded 31 Jul 2020
Dear Anne, Thanks for your feedback. I knew from the moment you walked in that there was going to be an issue. Despite me confirming 3 times that you could not have the veggie breakfast because breakfast was not served at 2pm you continued to harass my staff with repeated requests. You then tried to create your own dish by changing most elements of the veggie burger and hence I'm not surprised it wasn't great. It was at least 70% different to the dish that was on our menu by the time you'd finished your requests. We hope you find food better suited to your tastes elsewhere. Regards The owner and "manager".

The Glentress hotel is a fantastic hotel and my family loved staying there. The owner is always there to help and is willing to go above and beyond to make your stay as memorable are possible. The food at the restaurant is fantastic and good value for money. The selection of food is also varied which is great when staying there. Also, the restaurant staff were great. I would recommend this hotel to all my family and friends. The hotel also hires bikes at a very competitive rate so it’s worth booking with them. I have stayed at other larger hotels in Peebles however I will only be using the Glentress hotel the next time I visit. Well done Murry and team
