Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

The Hill Hotel has to be one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in! David & Joan, who were looking after the hotel for their daughter, simply could not do enough for us! they were extremely helpful in advising us which restaurants & pubs to visit, & sorted local taxis out for us. The hotel itself is lovely , the pictures don't do it justice, the rooms are beautifully furnished, with absolutely everything you need for a comfortable stay! the beds were just divine, my partner & myself had 2 excellent night's sleep. We can't recommend this hotel highly enough, Oh & I musn't forget the scrumptious breakfast !

Our host David was welcoming and helped us learn the area. The property is old and beautiful as well as neat as a pin. After walking to our restaurant on the river we enjoyed refreshments at the bar in The Hill. It was warm and welcoming to speak with the other guests and David joined in. This was a delightful place to stay!!

By room was booked by UCI as I was a volunteer for the world cycling championships that Dumfries was hosting for the para cycling races as part of Glasgow 2023. What a brilliant hotel from the welcome by Terry (proprietor) to the rooms with so many little extras that you wouldn't normally expect in a normal B & B. The Hill hotel is special gem! Assisted by his wife Lynn this is a must for a stop over in Dumfries. Fab chat with Terry in the evening behind the bar is a must! Well decorated hotel throughout, lots of little features around. The bedroom - those extras - think plush towels, bath robes, TV, little pot of sweets, lovely comfy beds, bedside clock haven't seen that for a long time, just over all a fab gem. Breakfast-- a plate full for a great start for the day ahead!!! Thanks Terry and Lynne

The place is spotlessly clean a very comfy. Lynne & Terry are fantastic hosts, very helpful and go that extra mile with a smile. You might be lucky enough to spot the rare Patagonian 3 toed sea hawk while staying there.

An excellent find, good location (for touring motorcycles or cars), nice room, first class breakfast, and very welcoming and informed owners in Terry and Lynne Hawkins. Terry has an intimate knowledge of the roads within 100 miles of Dumfries, and can provide detailed routes to maximise the scenic enjoyment of this area. He's also a 'fountain of knowledge' on local history in-and-around Dumfries !

A special venue which we couldn't praise any more. We thoroughly enjoyed this venue and it was perfect for our needs. The staff were efficient and the grounds were beautiful. If you are looking for somewhere in this part of Scotland then this is the place to be.

What a fantastic place... we had a wonderful stay. Terry was so welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. I was cycling the national cycle route with my Dad and we and our bikes were well looked after. The Hotel itself is beautiful and spotlessly clean. Loved the outside chairs and patio area where we had a drink in the sun. The bar looked really nice. An Oasis of peace in the bustle of Dumfries. Location is great too.. only a 5min walk into the center but just far enough to escape the noise of the lively pubs in town. Lovely clean fresh room and great breakfast too. Thanks Terry!

Fantastic gem, perfectly located for access to the town and with easy access to the road network so a perfect base for exploring the area. Large off road car park. Family run and spotlessly clean, we were well looked after by David and Joan. The breakfast, cooked to order, was exceptional. Great value for money. Very quiet and comfortable room, with fab hot shower.

What a gem of a hotel. We stayed 3 nights and couldn't fault it. We were greeted by Terry when we arrived who was so welcoming. Our room was large and had a huge bed that was so comfortable. I'd asked for a walk in shower and wasn't disappointed. It was a large shower with lovely toiletries on the wall. Plenty of room in the bathroom. Breakfast was so good and plentiful with plenty of choice. We met Lynne on a couple of nights with Terry and enjoyed our chats with them in the lounge. They were very informative on places to visit. Would we go back again? Definately.
