Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Absolutely lovely hotel - friendly and helpful staff. Amazing food, home cooked. Had the beef dinner, gravy was exceptional. The trio of deserts outstanding. Nothing too much trouble. Room was small double but cosy and lovely modern bathroom. Sat by the fire 🔥 and loved the ambience of this beautiful old house. So much more pleasurable staying somewhere like this when away with work than some soulless premier inn! Highly recommend!

Nice location which belies the hotel I was in room 4, a very basic room. No drawers to store stuff, 4 hangers. Bed was ok. En suite ok. Restaurant poor food not great, had garlic mushroom starter. Fish and chips more batter than fish. Was asked if I enjoyed meal said, not really oh good was the reply. Really disappointing location pleasant, staff not great, needs a good shake up

The hotel itself is nice, set in an amazing forest landscape with a real oldy world feel about it which I like. The staff were helpful and pleasant and the rooms decent and the food pretty good. Our only real gripe was the fact that they advertised themselves as dog friendly which is why we went there with our Lab Molly, but I have to say I would describe them as dog tolerant rather than friendly. Firstly we had to sit in the reception hall to eat our dinner sat on sofas around a low coffee table as they only had one small table in the hall to sit at properly and that was already taken. This made us feel rather awkward as it was difficult to eat and it pretty much prevented anyone else using the sofas. To be fair to them we were pre-warned that we would be eating in the hall which was fine as it was a nice room, but they really need to rethink seating in there if they want guests with dogs who like to have them with them at meal times to have a pleasant experience. The other dog related gripe was a complete lack of poo bins anywhere around the hotel and even in the forest car park there was not a single bin I could find, and we had a good search. This probably sounds like a minor issue to non-dog owners, but all dog owners will know how annoying this is and it does not encourage people to pick up after their pooches. We had to take Molly's morning "present" away with us in the car which wasn't nice. If there was a poo bin and we just didn't find it then aplogies but they need to make them available and obvious. Don't get me wrong, this is a nice hotel and we did have a lovely morning walk in the forest. However, compared to somewhere like the Sherbrooke Castle Hotel in Glasgow where we have stayed a few times and who absolutely bend over backwards to make your stay with your dog a very pleasant one, Mabie House needs to put a bit more thought into dog owners to be considered dog friendly.

We had a brief stop over here on our journey north and were blown away by this quaint hotel. Our bedroom was quite dated but it was clean, warm and very comfortable. The overall charm and ambience of the hotel was fantastic. The food was outstanding both at dinner and breakfast and the staff couldn’t have been friendlier. Would highly recommend this hotel and we will definitely be back!

Visited here for Sunday lunch with family. They do a normal menu which includes a beef dinner dish, also had a specials menu running. We have visited here a few times before and the food remains exceptional. Service was a little slow but we weren't in a rush. You can always tie in a walk in the Mabie Forest before or after!

Nice place but TERRIBLE mattress - lumpy and completely sunken on side. Location is beautiful, very peaceful, breakfast was pretty good, and the one guy who seemed to be doing everything from reception to bar service to breakfast orders was helpful. Sure, the room decor is a bit tired and a little dated but it's very clean and I would return - if it weren't for the awful mattress

Quite disgraceful treatment. After a family walk (8 of us - grandparents, parents, grandchildren) in the forest, we walked up to the hotel (welcoming to walkers etc it stated), asked if they did sandwiches etc and was shown the Light Bites menu. Lovely, just what we were looking for. Restaurant about one third full, saw an empty table for 8 and nodded towards it indicating we were 8 people. Sorry said guy, chef has a busy evening and can't do 8. But we only want light meal. Again no joy. I suggested we 'book in' as two lots of four. Sorry, again - it's 1.55 and we stop taking orders at 2.00. Chefs orders, I'm afraid, we're told ! Shocking way to treat customers.
