Great location, facilities very good.Staff great, but food very poor value for money....tiny portions and little flavour ......Very expensive menu and little appeal. Restaurant staff were brilliant and quick. Cannot recommend the food offer at all, beautiful building and setting.

Ok, where to start.... booked as an anniversary break for 2 nights, website, pictures looked good but now feel a bit deflated :( We stayed in a forest apartment with balcony, room was a good size, bathroom ok but very dated but nice toiletries. Bed was comfy, pillows were horrid, did get them changed but still very uncomfortable, balcony needs a wee bit of tlc with painting railings and cleaning the walls but still a nice view out. Their are only three areas of note inside, the reception foyer is lovely as are the two guest lounges at the top of the reception stairs, quite elegant with lovely period features, paintings and soft furnishings but please note these three areas are the only areas like this in the whole building! The bar conservatory area is nice and friendly and it was fantastic to see two Scottish Beers on draught :) not all of us like the 'gin' thing! The leisure facilities were good, adequate size pool, jacuzzi, sauna and a tiny gym area, good seating and lounging and we enjoyed these facilities apart from the gym. Breakfast was ok, self-service yet again :( nothing special to comment on just generic sausages, bacon, black pudding, haggis, would have been nice to see information about proudly sourcing local foods/suppliers but obviously not done here you can order food but that's only porridge or what type of eggs you would like apart from the 'sad' fried eggs on the self-service! please don't get me started on the so-called continental option, literally a small covered tray with the cheapest salami, sad cheese, and I think some kind of parma ham? sad pastries, no nice fresh warm rolls or bead and your usual generic cereals and I think yoghurt, sad fresh fruit selection, the only good positive note was the fact you actually got served your choice of tea/coffee/toast to your table :) Our so-called 'a-la-carte' evening meal was a complete expensive joke, very very tiny portions from the sad two roll bread basket to very poor small starters and the same with the main course, hubs had pork I had lamb and believe me you could not tell the visual look between the two meats, both very 'grey' and both only roughly 4inches long maybe 2 inches wide, sliced very thinly and very very tough (and yes I may be a woman but I did have a measuring tape to hand in my bag) sad spodge of I think was supposed to be potato dauphinoise, another sad long vegetable slither and something supposed to be creamed cabbage??? yes we ate it all as we were very hungry, we didn't order a dessert as we both felt it would be wasted money! all I can say is thankfully we had an emergency snack bag of peanuts and crisps and bisquits in our car which we carry during the bad months in our Bonnie Scotland in case we get stuck anywhere! yes it's probably my bad for not complaining at the time but usually everyone likes to be polite and not be that 'annoying' guest!! We feel our stay was far more expensive that what the Cally Palace delivered, yes we took 24hrs to think and deliver what we think and experienced!! On ok, a good note, most of the staff we came across were fantastic, friendly and smiling, the only sour note was the guy on reception (pony tail) who did not greet at the reception point with a smile and ask how things were, just a blank look from him especially when I requested more pillows and then 'scowled' at my verbal request, the same at check-out, no smile, no 'how did you enjoy your time here' just given a paper print-out of what what was owing and then no 'hope to see you back here, have a safe journey back' just completely no customer involvement which was/is sad and disturbing!! so....on the whole not a 'good' 'happy' stay which is a real disapointment to us as this was booked as our 33yr anniversay :( :( :(

As a regular visitor over the years I was very disappointed on this stay. Prices are up but service & quality are down. Food options changed to a poorer selection & standard. What is good is the location of the property something the management cannot spoil! Very disappointed.

Lovely surroundings and great service. Our room was a deluxe room and was so spacious and comfortable. Loved learning about the history of the hotel. It was like going back in time with the opulent decor, especially in the lounge with the roaring fire and beautiful Christmas tree. We had an amazing time

A mixed experience. The hotel and grounds are magnificent as was our palatial sized bedroom and bathroom. The staff are mainly friendly and obliging and efficient, but a few things don't equal the opulence. eg pre drinks are served in a sitting room, but the waiter told us our table was ready and very quickly disappeared so we were left drinks in hand searching for the dining room. Surely we should have been escorted with our drinks on a tray. One breakfast we requested seating out of the glaring sunshine as my husband has a painful eye condition. Despite at least 50 empty tables this request was refused. My husband responded by turning our table around and the waitress reluctantly helped and left. I then had to re arrange my own chair and re set the table myself! Our first cooked breakfast was hard and rubbery and mainly inedible. We guessed it had been keeping warm since putting it out at 7.30 so next morning we were early for breakfast, and YES, it was freshly cooked and very good. Food otherwise was very average, except my ENORMOUS hard all through, raspberry meringue, most of which I left. And my husband's lamb rump which was unchewable. This was refunded on check out. The hotel is lovely and warm and great also to have control over the heating in our own bedroom. We would have expected however for at least one open fire to be lit in November to give the rooms atmosphere. To be fair we were on a very good value 2 night bargain break so maybe their standards are lowered to compensate, but for food in future we will definitely be going elsewhere.

I enjoy staying here. Grand old hotel set amongst beautiful grounds. Great facilities and beautiful interiors and located in rural and scenic region. The food though could be better quality (and better value). I found much better fare in Gatehouse of Fleet but it’s a shame to leave the hotel and its settings for meals.

It’s a lovely historic hotel set in a beautiful location. Can’t fault the level of service from staff and the pool facility is good. Only two things left us disappointed after our stay. The first was the quality of one of the dishes in the restaurant was really poor. As others have said avoid the chicken korma!!! At £23 for a main you expect a decent meal. No. This was the kind of rubbish they’d bung in a microwave and serve you in Wetherspoons. Tasteless, dry chicken, microwaved rice and a cardboard piece of supermarket naan. When my wife asked how it was the reply was “rubbish.” Naturally being British I didn’t complain about it at the time because I didn’t want to make a fuss. However I sent half of it back uneaten, having ensured I made myself eat just enough to stave off hunger until breakfast. On a more positive note the fish the children were served was fantastic! The other unexpected issue was the overpowering smell of cannabis within the corridors around our room!!! It wasn’t there when we checked in, but was by early evening. It seemed some inconsiderate stoners were staying the night in a nearby room and the stench was both pungent and disgusting. We had to place towels on the floor at our door to keep the smell out as best we could (we also had two children with us)! I informed reception in the evening of the smell and the issues it was causing, although acknowledging it was presumably not their fault. The receptionist apologised and I was told the manager would be made aware but they weren’t sure if they could do anything about it. No further mention was made about this upon checking out. I wasn’t asked the question if everything had been to our satisfaction, had I been I’d have explained the above points. So upon leaving I emailed the company instead. Around 36hrs have passed since that email and I’ve received no response. Such a shame because this had the makings of a wonderful overnight stay and was bought as a birthday treat. I await a response to decide whether the place is worth another visit.

We stayed in the Cally Palace recently. All except one member of staff were excellent nothing was too much trouble. The one unhelpful person was the manager who was rude and uncooperative. The food was not four star standard. The menu on evening one was what we had for eight evenings. Only the soup changed. Apparently when it was in private ownership the menu changed each evening. I have two checks if duck is on the menu I have it and if it is good the rest will be - the duck was tough one night and inedible another evening. My other check is the cleanliness of the toilets - they were very clean. As I am disabled access is important. We were not informed that there are ten stairs from reception up to the main floor. Good handrails have been put on so there is plenty of support but …. The access for wheelchairs etc is,as usual, round the back. A fair trek to be presented with a very steep ramp with a handrail. I wouldn’t let my husband push me up. We enjoyed our stay in a beautiful part of the country spoiled by the access and food.

Spent three nights in room 21 and have no complaints. Comfortable bed, clean, quiet and nicely decorated. Views of the gardens. Breakfasts were buffet style but poached eggs were prepared for you when you asked. The waiters were friendly and helpful - Mark, Kimi and Nat. Stephen the 'Glesga' barman was a hoot! He always knew our room number and what we wanted to drink. The dinners were nicely cooked and the service was good. Well done to the waiting staff, chefs and restaurant manager, each an asset to the hotel. If I have one suggestion - the lounge by the bar is a splendid room but it could do with flowers to give it a lift - there are plenty of flowers in other public areas. I'm already making plans to return next year with family.

Set in beautiful grounds including a golf course and a cricket pitch, this hotel is a real find. Built in the 18th century it has retained some magnificent features . The room we stayed in was excellent with plenty of space and in excellent condition. The staff were friendly, knowledgable and attentive. The food was what you would expect in a well established and rated 4 star establishment. The restaurant is roomy, allowing guests to enjoy their own company, unconcerned by other diners. My only grouse was that I had forgotten to take my clubs and couldn’t take advantage of the well manicured golf course.
