Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A comfortable hotel with no frills. Very friendly staff offered a warm welcome. Service was excellent and the food, from a varied menu selection, was most enjoyable and reasonably priced. Overall, great value for money.

Firstly the good points: Staff were friendly, public areas seemed fine and the food was enjoyable (although the item I picked from the evening menu was not available) with a good breakfast. We had a pet friendly room which I would not recommend to anyone. To access the room it was necessary to leave the main body of the hotel, the rooms being at ground level, opening onto the courtyard/car park - not a bad idea for access with a dog. The room had windows and a glass door all along one side - not an especially cosy arrangement as the day we were there was grey and wet. The room itself was sizeable with a double and single bed but was rather stark. Beds were fine, comfortable with clean linen. However..... As soon as we opened the door from the outside we were met by an overpowering smell of dog - truly awful - to the extent that we almost left there and then, but we decided to stick it out. Clearly the carpeted room needs a deep clean of some sort, or even a new carpet (although the carpet did look ok). There was mould or mildew inside the built-in wardrobe in the dressing room area adjacent to the bathroom and dirt or mould on the inside of the door leading from the bedroom to the outside. In the bathroom there were areas that were thick with dust and other spots that had clearly not been cleaned adequately. eg there were dirty areas on the toilet roll holder and pieces of tissue in the sink. Areas of the rooms could do with some TLC and maybe a functioning extractor fan in the bathroom would help with some of the mould issues. I don't think that because we had a small dog with us we should have been treated like second class citizens but that was the distinct feeling we got with that accommodation. Avoid!

The bar in the Annandale Hotel is very smart and tidy and decorated very much in the Scottish Country House Hotel style with wood panelling, clan shields, tartan carpet etc. As such, it doesn’t have a pub atmosphere but is a pleasant place for a drink nevertheless. Service was friendly but the lager a tad flat.

I stayed here twice, for overnight stays on a long journey North, then South, a few days later. I was greeted by a friendly welcome upon arrival. My room both times, was very clean and the bed very comfortable. Evening meal and breakfast was very good, with a good choice of meals. The staff were all working very hard and remained friendly and polite at all times. The hotel is 250 years old and the route to some of the rooms can be a bit of a maze - that adds to the character of the place and is certainly not a complaint. Just a point to bear in mind, if a traveller has expectations of an ultra modern, characterless hotel that we see all too often these days. Now that I have "found" Annandale, I am sure I will use it quite regularly when I travel to/from Scotland.

Having booked an AirB&B in Moffat which turned out to be a disaster... Annandale came to the rescue and offered me and my son a twin room for the weekend. This is a proper traditional Scottish hotel - not ultra modern but really comfortable in a traditional way. Rooms are clean and beds very comfortable. The staff were brilliant - particularly the young gentleman on reception who is a credit to the hotel. Breakfast is really amazing, cooked using local ingredients and all made to order. Bar is well stocked and has more whiskies than you could imagine. There was even live music on one evening which seemed popular. Plenty of people also visited for a meal or a drink who were not staying which was nice to see. One or biggest benefits is hotel actually has a car park - big plus for us. Thank you Annandale.

They have a public bar open to anyone. We got a great friendly welcome and spent the night in the bar. Roaring fire and good beer quality. The lad behind the bar made us feel really welcome. The place is immaculately clean on Thurs and Fri night they have a small folk group playing which are great.

A traditional Scottish hotel - not hyper modern but comfortable in a traditional way. The room was very clean and comfortable. The staff were brilliant. Despite being short handed every thing was smoothly and efficiently run. A special mention to Elaine who was superb. My evening meal in the restaurant was very good and certainly value for money. Breakfast was excellent - good local ingredients and well cooked.
