Detailed Reviews
West end hostel (hotel?) is a pretty normal hostel and completely fine if you plan on staying a couple nights. It’s very clean— more so than other hostels in the area. Despite its distance from downtown, though, its single pane windows and thin walls make it one of the noisier hostels I’ve stayed at. Received absolutely no instructions on check-in—not even which bed I would be in. Didn’t find the wifi password or kitchen until the end of day two. You’re on your own here.
And the weirdest thing. This one gets its own paragraph because it feels absolutely petty that I would even mention it but it has truly coloured my entire experience— the bathroom lights. They are on a timer and hooked up to a motion sensor. However, the motion sensor is OUTSIDE the shower/toilet rooms and the timer is only set for about 30 seconds. So unless you are traveling with a friend who is willing to stand by the sink and wave their arms every 30 seconds, you are limited to a bizarre shower experience— either bathe for less than 30 seconds or commit to showering in pitch darkness.

Many thanks to Charles and his staff for providing excellent venue for our BTOCC (Old Codgers Club) Xmas Lunch on Monday Dec 12th 2022. To cater for 26 is not easy but we were treated to fine food and drink with excellent service whether it was from kitchen, waiter or bar staff. It was also great that many of us were able to enjoy a relaxing drink in bar area until early evening after our meal. Many thanks to Charles and his team... Will see you in 2023.

We stayed as a family of five in a room with six beds so luckily got the rooms to ourselves. The place is absolutely spotless and a very chilled out n relaxed atmosphere in the bar area. The manager Charlie was very hospitable and made us feel very welcome.

This hostel used to be my favourite. Not anymore. The room with 16 was filled with 8 beds. 6 of them were occupied by people that work in Edinburgh somewhere. The people watched movies on their mobile phone day and night. And they call anytime at night without using headphones. The bathroom stayed filthy and unhygienic during the two days we stayed there. Hair was all over and a soap dispenser stayed broken. We did not see cleaning people and we were sure that their aren’t any for the two days we stayed on the hostel. Asking for a tea in the bar was a wrong question. This older guy serving us warm lemonade didn’t give us the feeling to be liked. I seriously consider never sleeping there anymore. The first barman who fell in for a colleague was very nice. The second one didn’t like foreign people at all. I’ll consider staying in a hotel next time.

This place should be renamed "The Westend Circus"
It is run by a complete clown and surrounded by circus performers. They have no customer service skills whatsoever. There are absolutely no facilities for anyone with any kind of disability. If any of the management doesn't like the look of you...., they treat you like trash. This place needs a complete overhaul of staff.
Avoid this place at all costs!!!

Response from Management Response, General Manager at West End Hostel
Responded 29 Aug 2023
Hi James, thank you for taking time to leave a review. A lot a people pay a lot of money for a ticket at the circus if fact we might change the name to "the westend circus" We treat everyone the same at the hostels and as you can tell from our reviews that the staff get a lot of good reviews, but when customer like your self think its funny to be rude to the staff and talk down to them well then maybe that's why that's why they where not being nice but even as you was rude to the they still treated you like they do with everyone else as we believe that good customer service can go along way. we hope you have a lovely day all the best team west end

I’m 68 and wasn’t sure what to expect. All staff including the Manager, excellent, well mannered and thoughtful. I’m in a room with 17 others and people can be different every day but all good, nothing untoward. Facilities especially kitchen facilities, excellent you really couldn’t ask for more and you can cook to your hearts content if you wish. Clean room it’s only people who can leave their bed and luggage messy. I’m here for 16 nights. Well located to town and buses/trams brill. Give it a go you will be pleased you did.

Very clean and friendly atmosphere. Staff were wonderful. I stayed on the second floor, room 4 (which is actually the 3rd floor for us Canadians) Walking the stairs can be quite tiresome but it was ok for me as once I left the room in the morning, I didn't come back until nightfall. My last night there, we had a situation with a drunkard, but it was quickly dealt with and didn't diminish my stay one bit. It definitely made for a story to bring home if anything at all. The ladies I shared a room with were all very respectable and friendly. I found it really warm in the room/shower area, so I would suggest bringing a little portable fan however, it is peak summer and we had an uncommon heat streak the week that I was there. Definitely would stay again and definitely recommend.

This place is absolutely terrible. My entire trip was excellent until I arrived at this place. Staff are so ignorant and verbally abusive. No manners or respect whatsoever. The manager is a pest and creepy. Cleaning staff don't have a clue. The place was filthy. All the so called housekeepers wanted to do was smoke outside and drink coffee. It's not worth the money and a complete waste of time and energy. Avoid this dump at all costs !!

There's scant mention in the literature or staff about the booming all-night bar and disco that occurs on a Friday and Saturday nights (and other nights, maybe).
We had the delight of a group of lads who decided to chunter away in the stairwell until 4am, without any intervention whatsoever from night duty staff (assuming there is one) and a mere feign of sympathy from their morning colleagues.
Saying that, searching for positives, both the room decor and breakfast quality were more than adequate. (stay <May 2021)

For a hostel and for the price rooms and bathrooms were clean, beds were comfortable, and facilities all around were good. Owner Charlie was quite nice and even led us for a night out. We got a couple drinks at the bar and they were cheap. We were in the 18 person room and it wasn’t too bad. Bring ear plugs though, there’s lots of snoring.
