Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

If you stay here you will NOT be disappointed. Excellent Rooms and service. Spotlessly clean. Daily Chamber Maid Service (who does a brilliant job). Very friendly owners and very knowledgeable. Nothing is too much trouble for them. My partner says he has NEVER eaten a more tasty breakfast!!! Please help to support small businesses by booking DIRECTLY with the Guest House, as if you book through another source (say booking.com) they keep 20% in fees which is not fair on the smaller businesses. I am so GLAD we stayed in a smaller hotel rather than the big ones we usually stay at, as this was by far much more personal and quieter and very, very enjoyable. Can HIGHLY recommend. Top class toiletries in bathrooms and lovely, lovely selections of good quality teas. Huge comfy beds. Lovely rooms. Furnishings of the highest quality.

After reading the comment of the person who assumed that all keys are the same.....you assume wrongly, and you should have informed yourself properly, each room key only opens the front doors and your assigned room door, given that it’s s a sophisticated system in place at most guest houses. Only the entry doors to the property can be opened, no any other doors will open with your key. Sometimes and some people assume wrongly and should inform them self’s before making any silly and rather stupid comments. I stayed at Mayfield Lodge on Many occasions and can assure travellers that guest safety is paramount to Klaus and Hala, the owners. As a security camera is in operation and when the entrance door is not closed by some customers, the owners will advise the culprit on return to insure that doors are closed. The rooms a comfortable and adequately equipped and I always welcomed the tea and coffee making facilities with complimentary biscuits. The decor is a matter of taste in my opinion and the breakfast buffet served is a healthy choice with ample choices, I rather stay at Mayfield Lodge then other guest houses near buy, as occasions I had to chose the neighbourhood, due to no availability. I had once in August to take a youth hostel for £50.00 a night and had to share the room, ( bunk beds) with 6 other guests. No breakfast was provided. Given that I come to Edinburgh some times with short notice, I have been around the area quiet frequently, as I lecture at Kings Building which is just walking distance from Mayfield Lodge. Rather than making wrong assumptions, people should inform themselves before making any silly and unjustified comments.

The problem with trip advisor is you look at the ratings some places have, then compare them to others of the same rating, and the establishments don't compare with each other. I stayed at Mayfield Lodge for two nights paying just over £100. My main issue with this place is that it's the same key for the exterior door and your room door....so I'm assuming the same key opens every door then? The room was OK, decor was OK...a bit shabby and outdated. Spotlessly clean though. The stairs are rough especially with luggage. Breakfast was also....OK. Wifi worked fine. I wasn't allowed to leave my bag after check out and before my flight....the owner just shrugged and asked if I needed a taxi. It's a shame as this could be a great little place. If you need a place in Edinburgh in a pinch you could do worse than this, definitely. But you could also do far better. I would say it's worth around half the £100 a night I paid - but I realise Edinburgh hotels inflate their costs over the summer.

We spent 2 nights here and thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Our hosts were so welcoming, friendly and helpful. Accommodation was clean and comfortable with a nice view over a pretty courtyard garden and surrounding tree-lined neighbourhood. Breakfast was continental with plenty of choice. Access to the city centre was easy as we were on a main bus route (15 minutes) but was also a pleasant-enough half hour walk away so we were able to leave the car near the guesthouse; be warned: city centre car parking charges are a bit steep! We would definitely recommend Mayfield Lodge.

I received a very warm welcome on arrival which was nice after a long day of travel, the lady who runs the hotel was very helpful and accomadating, going out of her way to put on an early breakfast when I asked about checking out early which was kind. The room was cozy and warm and the bed was comfortable, the bus stop is only 5 mins away to get into the city centre which is only a mile away. Would stay here again

Our hosts were very helpful. Allowed us to leave are bags prior to check in, so we could explore unencumbered. They also provided good information on bus routes & taxis. Stairs up to our room was tight, when climbing with luggage. Room was clean tidy however the shower stall in the ensuite was very stall (our RV shower is bigger). Breakfast was OK certainly not what we had come to expect from Scottish B&Bs.

Incredible hospitality shown by the hosts, nothing was too difficult and they both went our of their way to be helpful. The room was comfortable and had everything we needed. The location was great and we enjoyed the 25-30mins walk into town each day. Would definitely stay again and highly recommend!

Had a lovely 1 night stay here whilst we visited Edinburgh for the Deacon Blue concert at The Castle, with my Mum. Room was lovely and clean, beds were really comfy. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of it and asked if we would like anymore. Hosts were fantastic, lovely and friendly, but also gave you your own space. They couldn't do enough to help. Close to a bus stop, quick link to the City Centre, managed to park for free in a side street round from the Guesthouse. I would definitely recommend this lovely place to stay and hope to visit again in the future. Keep up the good work. Thanks for hosting us.

Stayed here for one night. Slept in the attic chamber. Nice romantic room with small bathroom. Warm welcome by the owner. The car was parked for free just across the street. Only 5 min walk for the bus to the centre. The breakfast was complete (english breakfast). Good place to stay!

Kenny was there to welcome us, despite arriving fairly late in the evening. Very clean and lovely and warm. Easy off street parking. 10 minute taxi ride into city centre. Tasty breakfast which was kindly cooked early for us all. Much appreciated!
