Neighbourhood
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

We were only staying at the Apex for one night having arrived early for a tour that would begin the next day. Booking the room was extremely easy and as our reservation date came close we received from very helpful emails confirming our staying and making recommendations for spa appointments, breakfast deals, etc. We arrived at the hotel around 9:30 am planning to drop our luggage and tramp around the city until we could check-in...to our happy surprise they checked us in immediately and assigned Linda to show us to our room which was a very nice size with an extremely comfortable bed and a great bathroom that comes with Earl the rubber duck that you may bring home with you. I would say the only draw back (and it's a minor one) is that you must take stairs up to the elevator and on certain floors (ours being one of them) stairs down to your room. Linda insisted on portaging our luggage on her own so we didn't have to maneuver luggage and steps on our own. However-- if mobility is a problem you may want to contact the hotel about alternate routes to rooms prior to booking. The location of the hotel is perfect for walking about Edinburgh and it has several restaurants and pubs nearby as well as it's own restaurant. We had dinner at the in-house restaurant and it was very good-- service was interrupted due to a kitchen mishap but they were very apologetic about the delay. Since our tour group wasn't gathering until 1:00 pm the next day we asked for and received an extension in check-out time. Although it was a short stay-- we couldn't have been happier with the service and congenial staff.

We had a lovely bright room with a large bathroom. The beds are super comfortable and the breakfast was delicious. Would definitely recommend staying here and will be back! All staff was very friendly.

Perfect location for Princes Street and beyond. Room was upgraded to superior but not sure what was superior about it vs. the one we had booked as it looked the same. Front desk were superb upon welcome and also sorting out taxis for us - would stay again if needing to be so central to town.

I booked the Apex Hotel in Waterloo Place on the basis of a memory of a visit from many years ago and I was so glad I did!! All my positive memories were reinforced. Good friendly service on check -in, a relaxing bar area where I could wait for someone and quick and easy access to my room. After 2 weeks of touring and staying in boutique hotels, the standard of the Apex was great. There was a spacious room, a king size bed and a bathroom where there was plenty of room to move around. As an Australian, the separate shower was heavenly! Good quality furnishings and space just helped me relax. So thank you to Apex for being everything I remembered.

It took too long to achieve contact with the event team in our actual hotel . We were dealing with the Scotland office initially and they had little understanding of the practical issues that we wanted to resolve. The Hotel events team turned out to be superb and helped us to solve all the anxieties that were fermenting over a number of weeks.Early contact with them would have saved a lot of anxiety.
