What a great hotel . This is an old hotel but very clean and inviting , still has many old features like high ornate ceilings but with new modern bathrooms etc. We had the Linlithgow room which looked out at back of hotel with views of the city and hills in the background. The bed was huge and very comfortable...

Good location, tram stop almost at the door. Handy for Playhouse theatre and within walking distance of Princes Street and Waverley Station. Nice warm room with good view over the Firth of Forth. Friendly welcome and good value for money

When booking the Hotel I didn't realise just how great this hotel would be. Friendly staff, clean rooms and the location was spot on, not a stones throw away from the main centre and great off the road parking (for £9 a night, that is a steal). I have only been back since yesterday and i have recommend this hotel...

Stayed here with my girlfriend mid for 3 nights in February. I really couldn't fault the place, spotlessly clean, excellently located and convenient for all public transport. The staff are warm and friendly and always keen to help in any way they can. We are already planning our next trip back to 28 York Place and will be advising family/friends...

We had booked a room for 2. The room was spacious enough for two with a sofa and table by the window. The room was clean and cozy. The bed was comfortable and clean as well. The bathroom was clean. I think that is all you need from a basic hotel. The location of the hotel is fine. Its a...

Stayed here for one night in January 2017. Room was bright airy and comfortable with complimentary wifi. Brilliant breakfast provided at a very reasonable cost with excellent service provided by the manager. Location could not be better and practically opposite a tram stop so no problems getting around the city. Only a short walk to the shops, pubs and clubs....

Located in an old police club 28 york place is a lovely old townhouse on (of course) York place just behind princes street so it's bang in the middle of the city, regular busses pass or the airport tram terminates here. First of all there is no lift so you will be going up the stairs, we were offered help...

Stayed 14th December 2016 for our annual Christmas shopping trip. 1 min walk from bus station, well appointed rooms/bathroom and comfy. Breakfast is an optional extra but well worth it and will keep you going for the day. Good value for money and friendly staff. Close to Princess Street for shopping and bars and restaurants. I recommend this hotel as...

We had a great four night stay at 28 York Place during the christmas period - the period reception area was very welcoming and festive with a beautifully decorated large tree, and the bar area was modern with cosy couches and very enviting. Our room at the back of the hotel was very quiet and had splendid views over the...

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
