Lovely hotel but I found staff a bit robotic in reception except for doorman and concierge. Room was large with lovely view of castle with spacious well appointed bathroom and walkin wardrobe. Bar service slow considering wasnt busy. I was very disappointed with the spa jucuzzi not working and tiny sauna and steam room. No water robes or slippers supplied....

A most enjoyable evening celebrating our son's 40th birthday. The staff on the night were superb, helpful, friendly, efficient, nothing too much trouble. Just a pity the lady in charge of restaurant bookings etc was so hopelessly inefficient and unavailable). This is one of our favourite stops and certainly pulled out all the stops to provide a memorable evening.

Waldorf experience was very lovely and we would not hesitate on returning for another break. It was very flattering to have stayed in such an exclusive hotel. Felt like staying at least another few days. The staff could not have been more helpful. I would certainly recommend this hotel for a very lovely stay.

We stayed for 2 nights during Christmas season separated by a stay in the nearby Balmoral hotel. We got upgraded both times to absolutely lovely suites (Sir Walter Scott & Cuthbert) with wonderful views of the Edinburgh castle. Truly made for relaxing in a home away from home. We can recommend Peacock Alley for afternoon tea, drinks and bites. The...

I booked this for a surprise as part of my boyfriend's Christmas. We had a lovely stay in the hotel despite the horrible weather. We never had a view and it was a little noisy outside so I would recommend to book a room with a view. Breakfast was also very expensive. Perfect location for seeing all the sights in...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, or the "Caley" as it has become affectionately known among Edinburgh folk, was and still is the epitome of style and excellence. The large, rose-coloured Permian sandstone facade, quarried in Dumfries, dominates the skyline of the city's west end. The hotel has not only remained a focal point for more than one hundred years, but a symbol of the very best of Scottish hospitality. The Caley's pivotal position at the very heart of Edinburgh has always been its greatest asset. Created out of the 19th century railway boom, the five star hotel is looking to the future with confidence and pride in its ability to keep pace with the times. The hotel's reputation is as justified now as it was when the hotel first opened its doors in 1903. ... more   less
