Welcome to the heart of Edinburgh. Relax, as a result of recent refurbishments we can assure guests of FREE HOSTEL WIDE WIFI and personal POWER POINTS next to EVERY bed. Thrive in the backpackers atmosphere and meet people from across the globe. 24/7 Hot showers, FREE tea, coffee, hot chocolate and unrivaled ambiance are just a few factors combining to make your stay here at High Street Hostel a unique experience. High Street Hostel operates inside a historical 470 year old building formally known as Morton House. The resident, Earl of Morton, was beheaded in 1581, a consequence of his involvement in the murder of Mary Queen of Scots' husband. These days, we operate with less beheadings and more beddings.. Hah.. However don't be mislead. Though the hostel may be 470 years old we possess state-of-the-art facilities that will make you immediately question the present century. Welcome to the future, it comes with wifi. In conjunction with our next-generation building-wide wifi we have included personal power points next to each bed. With this combination you can maximise your time spent in bed watching films on your device instead of exploring this seemingly pre-historic city. NOTE: Do not panic. If you do not have your own device to waste time, on you may rent a tablet, or use the PC in the reception area. In regards to location, High Street Hostel is one of the most ideally situated hostels enabling travellers to step out of the door right into the heart of the city. As time goes by it seems we are becoming flanked by restaurants, pubs, and live music venues from all directions, explore the likes of which during our weekly pub crawls, trivia nights and other various events. For the night owls, we boast a 24 hour reception and lounge area to hang out before you embark on or after you wake from the sleep befit for a King of Scotland. High Street Hostel boasts the most relaxing and reverie packed atmosphere in all of Blackfriars Street, winning the Blackfriars Street hostel of the decade award 3 weeks in a row! Enjoy a daydream in the lounge with the landscape mural or question your sanity in the reception with whatever dubious music choice the receptionist at the time entertains. Whatever your fancy, the team at HSH is here to ensure a fulfilling experience of UK's favourite city. For the frugal travellers, rest easy knowing our prices are the most competitive in the city. Not only this, but discounts are offered throughout the city to our guests for pubs to cafes to entertainment venues. If you don't like to eat out, we maintain a fully equipped kitchen that would cause Jamie Oliver himself to quiver in fear at the thought of the storm he could cook up in it. We have tables and chairs acquired from what was the local church so you may be inspired while impressing your friends or any new friends you might make during your stay with that one elaborately delicious and spiritually enlightening meal you know how to make. Sleep well knowing you may continue your lucid mental state come morning time by avoiding the hassle of embarking into the nightmarish cold weather and taking advantage of our £1.90 Buffet styled breakfast available until 10:30am. Important things to note for more scrupulous readers; -The rumours are true, we do have a pool table. -Showers and bathrooms are located on each floor and shared between the lads and ladies. -We do not accept guests under the youthful age of 18 due to our fears of irreversible corruption as a result of interactions with our staff team. Also for legal reasons. -We do not host stag or hen parties. We ask you to contact us directly before booking if; -You wish to stay for a prolonged period of time or any more than 14 days. -Your party/group/fellowship/bouquet of flowery friends is larger than 6 members. If you plan to have a busy day and don't want to spend hours drying naturally, we offer towel rentals for only £0.20 And why not take advantage of our laundry service costing £3.50 And clean a whole bag of socks. For our high rolling guests, enter the world of luxury as you step into the mahogany filled reception area where you can listen to or endeavour to play the smooth sounds of the piano while smoking your pipe on the antiquated rich leather couches we acquired from private sales across the globe. Disclaimer; we do not allow smoking inside the hostel under any circumstances. We do however invite you to pursue future diseases and lung problems by taking advantage of our smoking area conveniently placed outside, and accessible from, the lounge. We also have a fish tank Come have fun High Street Hostel

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When checking in for my stay, the reception worker was telling me all the usual information for when you check in, and I asked if I would need a lock for my locker or if one was provided. The reception worker (I later found out his name is Raj) raised his voice and said not to interrupt him, finished his speech, and practically threw the keys at me. He did not answer my question and I was too embarrassed and shaken by him raising his voice and being generally very unfriendly that I just went up to my room. Thankfully, there were locks built into the lockers. Then, when I was leaving I stopped and asked him if he had any suggestions for things for me to do in Edinburgh...he in a really rude and loud tone said "No." and then went back to talking to another employee. Everything else was fine about my experience here but I will not be staying here again. I was shocked at how rude the staff member was.

Best hostel I’ve been to! Visited Edinburgh a number of times and every time we stay here. The staff are always so friendly, the rooms are clean, it has such a great atmosphere, the common area is a great place to meet new people and hang out. Always feel super welcomed and safe here. It’s also in an excellent location very close to the centre of Edinburgh and easy to walk to most places in the city from here. I would highly highly recommend anyone visiting Edinburgh to stay here. I will 100% be back again

I went in February 2021, and just now writing a review because I'm going back to Edinburgh and stumbled upon this place again. I only used the hostel as a place to sleep at night as we were doing a lot of exploring. I was in the biggest mixed gender room. Beds were fine, one bathroom with multiple showers for all of us. Even in Feburary, the room got stuffy and hot at night, waking me up. Additionally, there were two people having a snoring war which was unpleasant at 3 AM to say the least (I realize this is the danger of booking a large room but just sharing my experience). Also be aware of people getting up and leaving early with loud alarms due to this being a travelers hostel. Decent place and good enough amenities. Good - location - beds comfy enough - outlets by beds - nice front desk Bad - hot and stuffy at night (in February) - would love for more toilets and showers for the amount of people - snorers (not something the hostel can change) - not a social environment - people come back late / leave early with no concern for people sleeping

Due to rail strikes we weren’t able to keep our reservation here, but the communication was good and we resolved our accommodation query quickly and fairly. We emailed and received a response very promptly so we were happy with the fast response

Clean hostel. Friendly staff. Comfortable beds. Bathrooms are small but always clean. We were able to store our luggage there at no cost before check in. Perfectly located on the Royal Mile and within walking distance to almost everything. Room was quiet and cool at night.

I had a wonderful time at the High Street Hostel - I only stayed the night. The room was great, with a charging port and light for each bed which was handy. Great social space with a lot to offer (quiz night, movie night etc). Breakfast was great, and the luggage storage option after checkout was awesome! Thank you very much HSHE! 😄

I like hostels and usually go to backpackers hostel but this has been one of the worse experiences ever! They gave me the wrong room type (booked private twins and they gave me bulk beds, it is not the same and I have an issue with my hip... They said they do not have more roms available ... The heater was broken, I told them about and they said they will check it out and provide blankets. At night when I came back, the heater was still not functional, no blankets were provided, and someone left the window open... It was freezing since just 5 degrees outside... Also, the isolation was terrible since the window was broken.

Booked to stay here for 2 nights around Christmas time. Booked for 6 of us in the expectation that we would all be in the same room, arrived to the location to be told we were all in separate rooms with random people. As young girls we did not trust this and thought we should have been let know in advance for this, we had to stay someone else, and could not get a refund or anything, great to take money from young students just going for a few days away

Travelled all the way to Edinburgh after booking a bed at the High Street Hostel, only to be informed on arrival that there had been an overbooking and so there was no bed available. Apparently I was the 2nd person to experience this on the same night. The receptionist blamed the booking company and rolled his eyes when I asked him to call them. I asked for his name (Alessio) and for the manager's name - Alessio said he would ask his manager to call me, but I have not been contacted. Such practice has to stop! They are placing people in extremely difficult and potentially risky/dangerous situations with no-where to stay!

Stayed in a group of 12 friends and found that, despite having rooms to fit a party of 12, they’d put us in a 18 bed room with other guests. Some of the bedding wasn’t the cleanest and hairs on pillows put us off. When returning to the room at the end of the night some of us found other guests in the beds we’d been allocated which we were later advised was a fault of the reception staff. Given the room we were in was for 18 people with an adjoining room next door for an unknown number of guests we found that the 2x toilets, 2x showers & 2x basins was massively insufficient. One of the showers was unable to keep a steady water temperature alongside the light being unable to remain on throughout the time you were in there. The two positives for this hostel are the cost and the great location. Admittedly, a hostel is not my first choice to book but if the cleanliness was improved and facilities suitable for the numbers using them this could be an ideal stopover for anyone visiting the city.
