Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Superb! Cannot fault any aspect of our stay. We will be returning later in the year. It’s like stepping back in time, old fashioned service, nothing is too much trouble. We didn’t have time for an afternoon tea, due to commitments, but they looked fabulous. We would heartily recommend a stay.

This is a splurge hotel. The decor is gorgeous. The service is 5 star. This is a small hotel with a restaurant on site and 4 or 5 small drawing rooms to sit and read a book or sit in front of the fire and have a drink and snack. The room and bed are very comfortable. There are nice seating areas on the grounds that we didn't take advantage of as it was quite cool when we stayed there. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel. The breakfasts are to order and very tasty. The dinners were also excellent - try the red deer!

We stayed two nights at the beautiful Prestonfield Hotel for my husband’s birthday. The hotel is set in its own acres of grounds, which feel in the heart of rural Scotland, yet is only minutes away from centre of Edinburgh. The decor was really stunning with great attention to detail, most definitely the most interesting hotel I’ve stayed in. The room was also gorgeous with an enormous bed and immaculate bathroom and nothing was too hot or cold but wonderfully quiet and peaceful, even with the window open. The staff were all so efficient and genuinely warm and friendly. Both evenings we enjoyed eating in the Rhubarb dining room with full afternoon tea one evening and a delicious three course dinner the second. Breakfast was also a feast with a huge array of choices and full waiting service. We really couldn’t fault our time here and would both highly recommend Prestonfield - we wouldn’t hesitate to book again.

My wife and I had a wonderful overnight stay at Prestonfield. We attended an event in the Stables, which was excellent, then strolled back to our luxurious room. Friendly attentive staff did a great job and the surroundings are superb. I am looking forward to a return visit.

Beautiful hotel, gorgeous room excellent staff - everything had been thought of - just a perfect stay! Love the warmth of the staff and the opulent decor. Dinner was superb and beautifully served. I left my hat behind so we just had to drive back to the hotel for coffee! Any excuse to go back!

The location was amazing, and I'd forgotten how close to Edinburgh centre Prestonfield is. The welcome, by the porter, the check in by the reception and the attention to our needs and wants throughout our stay was second to none. Thank you.

We stayed for three nights in mid January. From the first moment we arrived to the sad time to leave I can honestly say I’ve never been more impressed by a hotel and its staff. Our room (The Owners Suite) was the most opulent room we have ever stayed in. The drawing room is something to behold. I had a bit of trouble with the shower above the bath as the curtain didn’t have enough material to go all the way around the bath so it ended up making the bathroom floor wet. Other than that the room was perfect. The mini bar is also well stocked with crisps, chocolate bars, tea cakes and soft drinks aswel as Budvar lager and some Vodka. All the non alcoholic items are free which is very unusual. We ate int the restaurant on two night and the food was delicious. I’m pescatarian so didn’t have as much choice as my wife. The staff are fantastic. There is no bar so whichever of the sitting rooms you choose is where the staff will take your order. Very personal service and special mention goes to Derek and Jenny. I would have mentioned more but some don’t have name tags to identify them. Breakfast was also a pleasure. We had it in our room in one occasion and then in the Rhubarb restaurant. Staff were super friendly and the coffee is delicious. We were sad to leave and I am already in an email conversation to rebook for later this year. We didn’t take our dog but we plan to as the hotel is really accommodating. Special mention must go to the owner James Thompson as he truly gets what a 5 start hotel experience should be about.

One of the best hotel experiences we have ever had. The hotel , the decor and the staff all exceptional. The food in the Rhubarb restaurant was both very interesting and really delicious - and the breakfast was out of this world. We will be back!

If you want to escape the real world and feel like a VIP for the day, this is the place to come! My daughter and I have just had the absolute pleasure of having afternoon tea here today. In all of our years of going various places for such treats, NEVER have we had such an impressive one as this! The grounds as you drive up are so impressive that you can’t help but feel excited by what’s to come. The entrance is adorned with beautiful, huge floral displays and the moment you step inside, the wow factor just hits you. We had our tea in the drawing room - a divine space with flocked walls, sumptuous furnishings, a roaring log fire and decadence by the bucketload!! We couldn’t stop admiring it all. The staff were so courteous and efficient and we were treated like royalty the whole time. The afternoon tea menu was superb. 4 different sandwich fillings, fruit and plain scones with jam and clotted cream (possibly the best scones EVER!) some savoury pastries and cheesy bites, and an array of cakes, macarons, and chocolate delights that looked almost too pretty to eat! Almost… ;) There were at least twenty teas to choose from (we highly recommend the Rhubarb & Rooibos and the Fudge) also coffees, hot chocolate - and a wine list that I could’ve pored over all day! I opted for a Marlborough Sauv Blanc which I’m still thinking about now - it was absolutely magnificent! We didn’t want to leave. It was honestly the finest afternoon tea in the most perfect of locations we’ve ever known. The atmosphere is indescribable - you just feel like you’re in another world - a world you want to go back to again!! This is a seriously decadent place to visit and I would recommend it highly to anyone wanting an absolute treat or looking to celebrate something special. We will be returning in the summer so that we can take full advantage of the beautiful grounds (it was sadly raining while we were there) and we will do it all over again gladly! To sum up, Impeccable service, outstandingly memorable - grand escapism with a warm, welcoming glow. 10/10 sum it up in one word - it would be Impeccable
