Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Our first stay here. beautiful old building with friendly and welcoming staff on reception. Room great, no complaints. Had dinner in the restaurant which was delicious and great wine and cocktails! Use of spa included which was great. We had massages which we had issues with. Discussed the manager afterwards who agreed. We were rebooked in for the next day and the massages were with Annie who was exceptional. Best massage I've ever had. Impressed with the manager sorting this out -issues do arise but it's how they are resolved that matters. Will definitely return.

We arrived at this hotel yesterday and just want to reassure anyone put off with the recent negative reviews that this is a gorgeous hotel. Our room is beautiful. Loads of space, lovely personal touches and absolutely everything to make the stay comfortable has been thought of. The receptionist who checked us in was lovely! So helpful. We had a stressful experience that morning with a booking site and she handled it wonderfully and really did reassure us. I am currently on a lounger in the spa feeling more relaxed than I have for a long time. Gorgeous spa facilities. Steam, sauna and jacuzzi wonderful. Not busy and kid sessions are well advertised meaning you do get some quiet time if you need it. Spa staff were so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant staff were so polite and happy to help us. Our lovely waitress was so great with her recommendations (didn’t catch her name, blonde lady) even telling us her mums favourites. The lady who served our drinks with the brown hair and the lady who met us to take us to our table just so friendly. Being from the North East I really fancied the chicken burger. We were booked into the restaurant but this was no trouble. They were delighted to assist. As we left the restaurant we met with a wonderful chap who was tidying the bar area. We spoke to him for a while and enjoyed his stories. He clearly loves his job and what a credit to the hotel. Breakfast was beautiful. The healthy shot was a lot different to the usual shots I consume but what a lovely touch. Delicious. I just get the impression that all staff at this hotel want you to have a great time. We will definitely be back. It’s a new favourite! The only one negative that I must mention was the wine prices. We regularly eat out and stay at hotels and the lowest price of a bottle of red was almost £40. In my opinion this is astronomical. Other hotels normally have a bottle priced at around £23/24, we normally end up buying two (Geordies, say no more). This price just meant that we dodged the wine and instead I drank lager. Didn’t really fit with my usual meal choices but I guess I was eating the burger. Which was divine by the way! Mmmm. Dare I order it again tonight?? Thanks everyone at Norton House. You’re a lovely bunch.

There were 3 of us in our party. At breakfast, despite the waitress asking how we wanted our eggs, 2 breakfasts were served without eggs. When we requested the eggs again, they were brought 15 minutes later by which time most of the hot breakfast had been eaten. Then the waitress accidentally knocked over the turmeric shot which she used our napkin to clear up with. She spread the sticky viscous liquid all over the table and disappeared. We fully expected her to come back to clear the rest but 10 minutes later, she still had not returned. We had to ask her to clean it up as the bright yellow liquid was off-putting and also we could not use that area of the table. We were not given a replacement napkin. The waitress had removed the jam plate as it too was covered with the sticky liquid but could not be bothered bringing back a new plate of jams. Yet again, we had to ask her. At no point was any apology for these various incidents proffered. We were made to feel that we were trouble-makers when all we had asked politely was to fix things that were not our fault. I have stayed in many hotels and this is the first hotel where we were treated with disdain. Another example was on our way out when we heard a waiting staff member tell a guest that smoothies were available as well as a hot breakfast buffet and a breakfast which could be offered from the menu. We were not made aware of these options and from where we were sitting, we could not see these foods available. Clearly a lack of consistency depending on which guests they served. At the previous night's dinner, our bottles of drink were cleared away without asking whether we had finished. When one of our party told them that her bottle still had quite a lot of drink left, she was told that they would supply a new one. However they managed to retrieve the original one from the bin, which they served to our party member. We were aghast at this attitude. The service was painfully slow and the dishes were lukewarm. Then they had the audacity to slap on a 12.5 % discretionary charge on top of an already overpriced menu. We asked for this to be taken off as we did not feel the food or service merited this charge. However we did leave a cash tip which did not please the waitress as she could not be bothered to hide her feelings. Well improve your service if you expect hefty tips.

We had an evening meal here. Service was very good but portions very small and I left hungry. Main course was what I would have expected in a starter. Dessert cost £10 and was devoured in 3 mouthfulls. I abhor use of discretionary service charge which is designed to embarrass you into not asking it be deducted. When you do ask, it embarrasses the waitress who assumes something was wrong with the service. A tip should be voluntarily added not have to be deducted.

This beautiful castle style hotel is conveniently located close to the airport. The grounds around the hotel are beautiful. Service is great and friendly. Breakfast offers a good variety of food. Rooms and bathrooms are spacious and clean and very warm. Unfortunately, we did not have time to visit the spa. Lovely place.

Didn't stay overnight just visited for an aternoon tea as stay local to area. The reception and service was great but as far as afternoon tea go it was OK Plenty cakes but felt the sanwhiches were not enough and premade which in fairness is quite common in a lot ofplaces. It wasn't bad if was just OK. If you want an afternoon tea you would definitely be better going to a self run cafe It's obviously not something that they specialise in which is fine . I like the norton as a venue and a spa though. Very nice place

My friend & I had a lovely overnight spa break at Norton House just before Christmas. Highly recommend this hotel & spa as it was so relaxing, spa facilities excellent and all team members were friendly & professional in how they went about their duties. Our room was very clean, very spacious and was amazing having 2 bathrooms which meant we could both get freshened up at the same time. We were treated to a junior suite which I can recommend as they have a lounge area on the upper floor. We had afternoon tea, dinner & breakfast as part of our package - we couldn’t fault the food & service at all. 5 stars to this lovely hotel who are clearly focused on creating the right environment for their guests to have the perfect relaxing break.

We came for a 3 night break away with the children, and had the best time. The hotel was perfect; rooms were lovely and spacious, facilities all great (kids loved the pool) and the breakfast / dining was brilliant too, very high quality and really delicious. Every single member of the hotel team that we encountered was friendly, professional and couldn’t do enough to help. We absolutely loved our time at the hotel and can’t wait to come back. We adopted a cute Clyde teddy so at least we could take a little bit of Norton House home with us!

Just returned for a 2 night stay from 27 Dec-29 Dec. Room was modern and clean. Lovely comfy bed. Breakfast was lovely. Meal in the evening was very nice but be prepared to spend £40 on wine, very nice wine (which we have bought from Majestic before and not for £40..) however the food was nice. The staff were all extremely friendly and attentive. The spa and gym is good, clean, well equipped however it is a decent walk outside to get to. Only around 30ish min drive into Edinburgh so good access to city whilst feeling out in the country All in all, would stay again.

We had a delightful stay over Christmas Our room had lovely modern touches, 2 comfortable seats to relax in, huge shower and comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast each morning. And nice to be able to amble around the grounds, to walk off all our eating. Christmas Day was understated but festive, champagne in the lounge, before grazing through a 6course lunch, the meal was outstanding, service attentive, a memorable Christmas
