A great hotel in a great location. Very comfortable, well-appointed room, if quite small. I paid extra for a 'larger' room overlooking Princes Street so I imagine a smaller room might have been a bit of a squeeze. Location cannot be beaten with the Gardens directly opposite, Jenners next door and the High Street just a couple of minutes walk....

2nd time staying in the Mercure hotel. Perfect location for everything you could possibly want to do in Edinburgh. Right on Princes street, and 30 seconds away from the train station. Opposite the large park, which at the time I have been is where the Christmas market is. Next to all of the shops you could want and on the...

Stayed here for 4 nights. The location is excellent. Right in the heart of shops, restaurants and bars. We were checked in quickly and a lovely guy Stephen gave us a great quick guide of the area on the map. We'd booked a twin room and after reading some bad reviews about the back rooms were delightful when we were...

Stayed here again for third year for a short post New Year break and not disappointed. Great location a short walk from rail station and right bang smack in the middle of Princes Street. Perfect for shopping and bars/ restaurants. Upgraded to the Castle view again to ensure we were overlooking the Xmas market in the Gardens. Well worth it...

Not the first time we've stayed here and although it is looking a wee bit tired and frayed round the edges it is still the perfect place to stay in the middle of Edinburgh ...the staff are always attentive and good natured ...it's worth the extra for an upgrade to get a room with a balcony ...views of the castle...

Good location although the hotel entrance, lift and stairs smelt of cigarette smoke. Staff were pleasant! Hotel needs updated and carpets need cleaned. There was a sofa in my room that was filthy. Plenty of choice at breakfast but the black pudding and bacon tasted stale. Definately not a 4* Hotel. Wouldn't stay here again.

Combining a work trip north with an opportunity to stay in Edinburgh for a family birthday, I found a great rate at the Mercure Princes Street. In fact the rate was so good considering the prime location, right opposite the Scott Monument with views looking out to the castle from my bedroom, that my rating might seem slightly harsh. However...

My partner and I were given an ItIsOn voucher for this hotel. Booking was very easy and it was very easy to add on an extra nights stay to allow us to spend time in a great city. Check in was smooth, team very chatty and helpful. Our room was on the 2nd floor (directly above the restaurant area) very...

Staying in Princes Street and Gardens

Neighbourhood Profile
Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.
