We stayed over a year ago in February but I wanted to review how great a stay we had. We had a great deal with the hotel which was very clean and smart. The location is really close to the train station and to city centre. It is built into a shopping centre but you can't tell whilst inside the... More

This trip to Scotland was for a very special reason, Edinburgh marathon weekend. Regarding this particular hotel which we chose for the location close to the start of the great event, we knew before we got there that there will be an issue with the parking as they only have limited spaces in front of the hotel, sorted the parking... Good hotel at a convenient location in the center of Edinburgh, not far from the train station. The room was on the smaller side, but well equipped and clean. The hotel looked a bit tired and worn, certainly a good candidate for renovation. Impossible to take a shower without bath mat, as the floor of the bathtub was extremely slippery.... More

We stayed here on arrival into Edinburgh via train. The hotel was a short walk from the station. Our room was spacious, the staff friendly, and the breakfast was wonderful. Sad to see from recent reviews that this option is no longer.

I really felt that I arrived in a location from a movie on the sixties. So old fashion and brown.. everything was just brown? The room has to be one of the smallest I have ever been in. and old, and brown, and just not be at all. Good thing for breakfast that there was a Starbuck located on the... More

The hotel was only open for one more day after we left, although there was no indication that the staff were winding down - everyone was extremely courteous and professional. We were there for the marathon, and the hotel were able to arrange a late check out, which meant we could shower in comfort afterwards. The hotel is in a... More

As part of the demolition of the St James shopping complex this hotel has been closed. A new shopping/hotel complex is being built but in the mean time this place is closed and in the shopping complex itself only the John Lewis shop is remaining open during the work.

Stayed for one night over the weekend for a theatre visit. Met by friendly staff who checked us in promptly and provided a token for the nearby car park (very reasonable at £8 per night). Nice room, clean and comfy. Hallways looking a bit tired, but it's perfectly nice. Good location for the Playhouse Theatre and Princes Street and not... More

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
