Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Came with relatively high expectations with my mother who’s celebrating a big birthday. Didn’t know the price of the stay, but if I had, it would’ve lowered my expectations significantly. It’s cheaply priced because that’s what you get. We had mould in the bathroom and on the (single pane) windows. The breakfast wasn’t very good and we had food separate from the hotel for both our mornings. Staff had earphones in at all times and we felt they weren’t very attentive - however maybe they aren’t paid properly in case we can’t fault them. We actually had a big caterpillar in our room the second night which was slightly gross. Water was quite uneven both in the tap and the shower. We had plenty of dust in our room. Won’t return and do recommend to spend a bit more money and get a proper hotel instead.

The Victorian style house is nice. That is about all that ended up being nice about our stay. Walking up to the front door, we saw a sign asking guests to use the nearby phone to call directly to reception for someone to come and unlock the door. Completely normal for a small hotel or bed and breakfast. Unfortunately, there was no one in reception. At 4pm. When it states on their website and hotel documents that someone is in reception from 8am to 10pm. We gave them the benefit of the doubt for the first few minutes-they may have needed to step away. We decided to walk around to the back of the house to see if there was another way in. On the way, we saw a person in the front sitting room who glanced at us, but went back to looking at their phone. Probably just a guest, right? Nope. After unsuccessfully finding another way in, we went back to the front door and tried the reception phone again as well as calling the hotel from a mobile phone. Still nothing. We then knocked loudly on the door to maybe try to get the attention of the person in the front room. That worked. A woman in workout clothes came and opened the door, stared at us and said nothing. We asked if she worked for the hotel and she responded with a yes and casually walked into the front room where her phone was still playing the video she was watching. With no small talk or explaination, she had us sign in, gave us a key, and said our room was on the top floor. She then returned to her phone. The room itself was very cold. The radiator couldn't keep up with the drafty window. There was a portable space heater in the closet. Next to a very large spot of mould on the wall. We didn't think it would be the best to use a space heater that could potentially have mould inside of it. That combined with the many stains on the walls gave the impression that the room was quite shabby and dirtier than it actually was. The double bed was just two single beds pushed together, which isn't the first time I've seen, however made for a difficult sleep as the mattresses were also quite hard and lumpy. Breakfast was included in our room, which consisted of either a made to order hot meal, or a selection from a cold buffet. According to the website, the buffet was supposed to consist of juice, fruit, yoghurt, oatcakes, croissants, and cereals. We had opted for the buffet, but we're greatly disappointed when we arrived downstairs to a measly selection of cereal. Nothing more. The same woman who had "greeted" us the day before was there again. When we entered the dining room, she asked for our room number and then turned around and left. No 'good morning' or any other pleasantries. Thankfully, we were only staying the one night and didn't have to endure additional time in the disappointing hotel. The cost of the room definitely did not match what we received. This experience came as a surprise to us based on the numerous positive reviews we had seen before booking. While we did appreciate the beautiful home and free parking, the rest of the stay was thoroughly lacking and a disappointment overall.

I arrived at 4 pm. I was leaving on a 9 am train the following day. We discussed breakfast. I was after 7:30 but the staff didn't understand that I was leaving at 9 from the station. Eventually I was told 7 and 20 and we filled in the form for choices with 7:20 as the time . I duly got up and waited. There were 4 others in breakfast waiting. No teas, no coffee, nothing. Cook arrived at 7:45 for breakfast starting at 8:00. So, I was just lied to. You just need a sign saying breakfast from 8:00 and to brief staff to not promise something they can't deliver. Not happy, I had to rush off and grab some junk from a railway buffet.

All in all , a very tired hotel . The rooms look nothing like the photographs. As soon as we got there we had to pay. Our room had a bulb out and a radiator not working, subsequently fixed, but this should have been attended to before we got into the room. The bathroom also had two bulbs not working. The shower was filthy and covered in mould, for this reason, I didn't use it. The chap that we dealt with on arrival was very hard to understand. It was an expensive stay for what was offered. Would not recommend.

We booked based on the pictures on the website. The room is nothing like that. The carpets are dirty, the room is dark and in the basement, there is mould all along the wall with the window, the room didn't get serviced for 2 days, bathroom shower curtain is mouldy, and there is one hand towel and one face cloth for 2 people. It's like a Super 8 without the bedbugs, and 10 times more expensive. Major disappointment. The people are nice but really doesn't make up for the experience.

Lovely stay - last minute booking and very accommodating staff. We wanted to verify the room prior to booking and they were happy to check the room and answer any questions. The 11am checkout as standard is very helpful - didn't feel rushed. Will be back, The Gunns

When we arrived we were greeted by Lewis who was very welcoming and helpful. Lewis gave us lots of information about edinburgh and how to get around and places to visit. We stayed in the lodge which is separate from the main hotel very nice room with everything you would need and more. The lodge has a lounge and conservatory. I think when we visit again I'd request to stay in the actual hotel so we can experience the hotel itself. Breakfast was included which was very nice and plenty of choice. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Ample parking onside. The bus stop is right outside the hotel with plenty of buses going into the city centre about 10 minutes trip. Edinburgh was brilliant when we come back we will stay again at the kildonan.

This is an older Bed and breakfast. The room was a nice size and the reception room was very comfortable. Wifi was spotty. They need more outlets to charge electronic devices. The staff was very professional and responsive. We loved meeting Laura. We also enjoyed the breakfast served here.

What can I say, we were made welcome from the beginning so friendly and a really nice atmosphere. Parking free and ample round the back. Knew the local area well and helped me and my daughter find our way around, local bus stop straight outside and cheap. Ordered breakfast the day before, it was cooked to order, fresh and ample. The best poached eggs ever! Nothing was too much trouble even made my daughter a hot chocolate to go with hers. It felt like a really nice treat ☺️ Room could do with a lick of paint but it was clean, comfy bed and quiet so we did have a good sleep. Lovely touch with the sherry and biscuits too. We enjoyed our stay and can't wait to book again, thank you so much x
