Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Great location for the Playhouse, Princes Street and Leith. The en-suite room was clean, and the beds were comfortable. Hostels are an affordable way to see cities, as well as in other locations, and this one is ideal. Special mention for the amazing staff, who were very friendly and helpful. The café bar is very good too!

This hostel is the best especially you’re travelling alone and exploring Edinburgh City Centre & Leith. The staff are nice and helpful, the food there is amazing, especially their Cappuccino (it’s top tier, you’ve got to have it). The rooms are tidy and cleaned, and lockers are available for you to put your personal belongings into it. Not to mention their self-service kitchen and dining room there that you could always cook your own food. I had a great time there I’ll definitely come back and stay wherever I visit Edinburgh.

Is this place a hostel or a nursing home? Other than the staff, who were great, this place should be at the bottom of your list. It feels so sterile and totally devoid of any character. Also, when you connect to the wifi, you constantly get errors that your connection is not secure! We stayed at other hostels in Edinburgh, connected via cafes, and never had this problem/warning. The kitchen and common areas feel like a nursing home. Breakfast doesn't start till 8 - so good luck if you have any early morning trips planned. Really disappointing overall.

It is 3.10am on the third floor and the noise is horrific. Screaming shouting doors banging , bottles being thrown in the bins. Tried calling the 24 hour reception but it just goes to answer machine. As a solo traveler it just doesn’t feel safe. Cleanliness of the room leaves a lot to be desired.

We were really looking forward to stay at this 5 star hostel. We had booked a private room ensuite and on the main homepage (hostelingscotland) was a picture of a really nice room with towels on the bed.  What we got was exactly like an ordinary doorm room with bunk beds. The room was a bit dilapidated and in the toilet the lamp was broken and switched off after only 4seconds - and it got pitch black. This was extremely annoying and the kids didn’t want to use the toilet. It was dirty in the corners as well. There was to my surprise no towels either. On the upside - the shower had the best water pressure I ever felt! The radiator had spots on it like someone had thrown up, or splashed something. The bed was okay but we could feel the springs in the mattress. The bedsheets was clean and nice. The lobby was really nice looking. Sadly people had spilled so there was spots on the sofas. During the time we were here it was not possible to by alcohol from the bar/cafe. The kitchen and dining area was good but there could have been more glasses. If you expect this to be a normal hostel and not something five star, you will have a good stay.

Having never stayed in a youth hostel before I was kind of expecting it to be worse. Reception was clean and modern looking as if it was a hotel. The family room had 3 bunk beds and spacious. Comfy beds. The furniture was very dated however and resembled classroom furniture. Check in was late at 4 and the room wasn’t ready straight away which was unusual when so late however as we needed to get ready for Harry Styles concert they let us get ready in reception, use their plug sockets to charge phones and take over the sofa area. I imagine if we had chosen a hotel they would not be so accommodating.

Fit for purpose, Edin, esp at weekend, can be dear for accomodation, so I have stayed here before Location 10 mins walk from bus, 15 from train. I was attending an Usher Hall gig, would normally walk but it was a horroble night so easy got a cab both ways check in straight forward, room spacious if basic, yes I understand its hostek not hotel. Awkward bathroom door, you need open inward door, position self, close door, door hits you on way, cramped Beds, two singles, comfy enough, room quiet despite overlooking main road Felt safe enough, although swipe card security door on level 1 was broken. As basic as it is, I do like a ' was everything ok?' on check out, but this never happened I dont go looking for faults, its a well located place to kip for night.

Spacious room with great shower and a comfy bed. Very quiet and super helpful staff. Not the cleanest place I've stayed but was fine. Walking distance to central Edinburgh and heaps of good restaurtants nearby. Hadn't stayed in a Youth Hostel for ages and forgot to take soap so we had to race bout and get some. Felt very safe here.

on arrival the name is Edinburgh Central so you don't know its a hostel. reception area new and immaculate. Good bar choice breakfast area clean and appealing Rooms clean and as basic as expected. If the rooms had a kettle it would make huge difference or if you could hire one. reception has a tap and glasses to help yourself to water. hostel has WiFi unsure of speed didn't use it. Lots of mixed ages. felt safe. fire alarm went off at 6am and we evacuated, apparently its common when residents leave shower door open. everything seemed 15 minute walk away. Castle, botanical Gardens, Princess Street, Brittan yacht staff very friendly

Pros; Central location Comfortable bed Plenty of hot water Clean Cons; Food was horrific; many of my Y9 group wouldn’t eat, and I agreed. The “chicken” was rubbery and had no seasoning, the chips were still partially raw, the green beans hadn’t been trimmed and the burger was so full of fat you could roll the blobs of it around your mouth. Breakfast was a riot; way too many people at once. It’s on a very noisy road; ear plugs were as much use as a chocolate tea pot!!
