Where do I begin? Firstly I would state that I love old buildings and am more than happy to tolerate the usual issues that come with them. The problems with this hotel though do not derive from its age. The building and rooms have huge potential to be utterly beautiful, the real problem lies with what is obviously poor management...

On arrival the hotel manager tried to sell a tour to us as soon as we walked through the door! Not even a friendly manner either when doing the hard sell! As we were only staying one night we told him 'no thanks' as we had plans. This did not please him at all! The hotel is placed in a...

Booked in here as convenient for work & Haymarket station. Room was ok but stained wallpaper & carpet. Toilet was unflushed and as for the toilet brush it was disgusting! However the shower cubicle clean with hot water. Bed was comfy with clean sheets. Breakfast was continental you have to request toast & I had to make myself understood to...

A kind friend booked us into this hotel which was nearby. It is very central for Edinburgh, but the hotel badly needs bringing up to date. We were up two flights of stairs and there is no lift. The curtains were coming off the rail and there was a huge hole in the carpet, The breakfast was served by a...

Brilliant location, yet quiet at night, and the bed was OK. Otherwise filthy, and I had to carry my rubbish out myself. It is thoroughly absurd that this is listed as a 3-star hotel. I heard other guests claiming to see the manager because "this was not what we paid for". So true!

This hotel really could be so much more... Its perfectly set just 15min walk from the city centre, Its a beautiful building that was built for a rich family. At first glance ...The architecture and interior design is like something from downtown abbey, However... The whole operation is bordering on a shambles. We booked the room and breakfast for 3...

We were looking for a reasonable priced hotel in Edinburgh for a group and we really picked the wrong one. This is by far the worst kept Hotel we all had ever stayed in. The positive points are that the Hotel is on a nice street and the location is pretty good. The Hotel is just a few stops on...

This place needs some TLC. Light bulbs missing, cracks in the tiles, tape round the shower head holding it together, wifi didn't work. The breakfast was also very disappointing. Just a few over-sugared cereals, tasteless white bread, some apples and pretty tasteless coffee. It took 10 minutes for the breakfast attendant to realise I was there and ask if I...

3 star hotel? I would describe it more like a 2 star in a grand house. Location: Great if you don’t mind the mile walk from Waverley rail station. It’s easy to find too. Safe location, between streets full of expensive town houses and apartments, alongside embassies etc. Lovely little park outside across the road. Overview: Sadly the hotel is...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
