As you walk through the door of the Ballantrae West End Hotel (after having to ring the doorbell) your eyes are met by a sexy looking staircase and a distinct lack of a reception desk. The decor is quirky and there's a comfy lounge/bar area on the ground floor. In terms of rooms, we stayed in a 'junior double room'...

The hotel is pretty central. You can walk pretty much to every sight in Edinburgh. Our room was very nice, big, charming and classy. It had high ceilings, a fireplace, a sofa etc. Only the bathroom was a little downer. The staff was very friendly and helpful.

Stayed here for a long weekend 21 - 24 November. Beautiful building in need of some TLC. We had a lovely large room which was very quiet. The duvet on one of the single beds had a disgusting stain on it but this was changed immediately for a brand new one and the night porter was very apologetic. We discovered...

The hotel is in a lovely crescent of beautiful old houseshare and looks lovely from the outside, the entrance hall and bar/reception area also look ok,large swepping staircase, the girl on reception was very nice, gave us our key to room 3 and off...

We have stayed in many hotels but this must be the worst and I can only assume the high marks and reviews must be from friends or family. We booked a double room for 5 nights .After the first night my wife felt as if she was falling out of the bed, noticed one side was higher and the base...

Wanted a 3 day stay with my wife in Edinburgh for not too much so I did a bit of homework on the net. I found a good return cheap flight from London and then I came across Ballantrae Hotel At The West End, three nights in November, again very cheap, room only, no meals. Edinburgh to the hotel, very...

We stayed here as it was in a very good area for walking around Edinburgh, very near the tram stop to the airport and handy for restaurants etc. From the outside the hotel is very attractive. The hall way has two beautiful chandeliers and the bar/ lounge area is well decorated and cosy. The staff (of which there were 2,...

Booking.com , at short notice for Open Doors Edinburgh . Everywhere seemed full , £452 for 4 nights double room . This is a small old hotel high ceilings , old furniture with no hot food . I only found 1 fire alarm point after searching for it , tucked down the side of the front door behind a ladder...

Booked here for a last minute trip and was not expecting much based on earlier reports .. I have to say though that I feel many of these reports to be a bit unfair. The hotel is admittedly slightly dated, but is in the main welcoming, clean, and more than adequate. our room (5) was large and more than satisfactory....

The breakfast was not really satisfactory, in terms of options, for instance eggs, bacons, etc. Though the breakfast service was supposed to start at 7 AM (I do not exactly remember the time), the person was not available till 7:15 AM. The most disappointing thing was a big wardrobe kind of thing right in front of the room that one...

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
