We stayed at the Residence Inn by Marriott for 3 nights in December 2016. We booked a studio and it was very nice, clean and with modern furniture: a bedroom with ensuite bathroom and a small kitchenette (we really never use the kitchette). Residence Inn offer free continental breakfast and free wi-fi included in the rate. Good location, walking distance...

Relatively easy to find but oh so central, the Residence Inn was perfect for our stay in Edinburgh. Check in was a breeze, and holding our luggage until check in time was no problem at all for the lovely, helpful staff. The room was modern, exceptionally clean and there was no street noise at all and very effective block out...

We stayed here just before Christmas 2016. The hotel is in a great location. Not exactly in the middle of all the action but a short walk away. The room was a nice size and clean. Had a small kitchen. Breakfast was great. The hotel has two washing machines and driers that are free for guests to use however the...

We booked this hotel and mentioned it was our anniversary...upon arrival we were told our room had been upgraded and received 2 free drinks from the bar. Our room was very clean and consisted of a kitchenette, on suite bathroom and bedroom /living room. The room was well decorated and clean. There were plenty of amenities such as a dishwasher,...

We booked this new and ultra modern hotel through British Airways holidays and to be honnest my previous experience in a similar Marriot Residence in Budapest, which was great as well, was the main reason of our choice. Our studio was huge by any standards, smart and very clean. Buffet breakfast was great but above all the reception and breakfast lounge...

I absolutely loved to stay at the Residence Inn. The bedrooms are very spacious and comfortable. Hotel is located in a quiet area but very close to Edinburgh downtown. The staff was extremely friendly and the breakfast was great! I will definitely come back.

The hotel is within 10-20 minutes (walking) to the majority of things you'll want to visit in town. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and probably the largest I've experienced in Europe.

We visited Edinburgh for Christmas and New Year. Stayed for ten nights at this hotel and the stay was excellent. Room was ready when we arrived (we were lucky!). Room was very spacious and clean. It is a mini apartment, with a separate living/kitchen area. Rooms are quite with the windows closed, a bit noisy when they are open. Breakfast...

I was in Edinburgh over New Years for Hogmanay and stayed at the Residence Inn on Simpson Loan, by the University. While the location was great in regards to access to Old Town, the hotel itself was missing on two points. First, the mattress was a tad too sturdy, it felt more springy than soft (I prefer the mattresses at...

Staying in Southside & Holyrood

Neighbourhood Profile
Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighbourhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.
