My husband booked us for the night as part of my 40th weekend, the staff were all fantastic the room was basic but it was just a base for us. It was clean &comfortable. I liked the fact that the hotel allowed us to leave our bags all day Sunday until our train home early evening.

The hotel is well located in the New Town, about 10 minutes walk from Waverley Station. Staff were very friendly - both at reception and the bar. We booked a 'cozy' double room. As the name suggests it wasn't massive but it was big enough for somewhere to get your head down for the night. There is a dressing area...

Stayed here for an overnight, staff very friendly and helpful. Could leave heavy luggage after 11am check out stored away which was really helpful. Few picky issues with dirty shower plug hole, dirty lamp shade and dirty chair at dressing table. Everything else very clean. TV, tea facilities and even an ironing board and iron. Lovely views stayed in Room...

I was visiting with my daughter for a 3 day break, the staff could not have been friendlier and professional, nothing was too much trouble, the room was fabulous and the bed really comfortable, our room was on the front but we could not hear the traffic passing, it is really central so the ideal place to stay, definitely stay...

Stayed two nights. Room was THREE flights of stairs & very small. Staff in the bar did their best but were clearly understaffed. Slow service!!! However very good location and all staff were pleasant and helpful . Not as good as our last stay. May stay again but would ask for a room lower down.

We stayed here on the second night of our trip to Edinburgh, we were given the top floor room many, many stairs to climb! The room was very average, I expected much more. The room was clean enough but foostie - we've had to wash everything we took with us when got back home! This has been the worst breakfast...

Hello Stephen S Thanks for your review. We seem to have missed out on a few basics during your stay and I am sorry that we weren't up to scratch. Breakfast in particular does not sound like what we would like to provide. I have passed your comments on to the Restaurant Manager and I am sure he will take...

My boyfriend and I stayed here on a weekday after arriving back to Scotland from a winter break to Copenhagen. We thought it would be a nice way to end the trip by catching the Christmas market and also to relax after spending days walking miles and miles! I have to say that I did have high hopes for The...

Hello MeemsMay. First of all, thanks for going to the trouble of reviewing the hotel, even though your experience was not up to the standard we would like to provide. I wonder if you would be able and willing to email me directly so that we can discuss your previous stay in more detail and perhaps look at ways of...

Had a very nice lunch here with my friend , enjoyed soup and half sandwich very tasty followed by sticky toffee pudding. Very enjoyable, unobtrusive service and not rushed as we sat and chatted. Nice and quiet venue as the city was jumping!

I went here for dinner with my partner for a pre-theatre dinner. We weren't very impressed with the restaurant. The food wasn't very good, slow service and the restaurant was strangely warm and had no atmosphere.

Staying in Broughton & Calton

Neighbourhood Profile
Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighbourhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicentre Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.
