A fabulous new addition to Edinburgh, I had a great stay. The location is great, a hop from Waverley Station & a skip from Harvey Nichols & other top shops & restaurants. The building itself is charming & well suited to the Gleneagles brand, having formerly housed the Bank of Scotland. It has grandeur & striking features, most particularly seen in restaurant ‘Spence’ (Scottish for larder). This all day Brasserie is the beating heart of the hotel, a stunning, high ceilinged, cupola topped salon of Corinthian columns, Art Deco panelling & sumptuous velvet banquettes. Upscale, but easy going, it serves breakfast through to dinner & is open to all. Food was good rather than great, but the overall experience, (excellent service, buzzy atmosphere & stunning surrounds), was memorable. My favourite aspect of the hotel was Lamplighters, the rooftop bar exclusive to residents & members. It’s an intimate, lavishly decorated space with terrific city views & a delightful Al fresco terrace. Service was friendly & attentive, the drinks & snack menu appealing. The reception team were excellent, offering a personal & unpretentious welcome, with pre-stay emails answered promptly & requests noted. I was upgraded to the next category room, always a much appreciated gesture. Bedrooms as anticipated, are beautifully decked out to a very high standard, with super lux beds, duvets, linens etc .. very cosseting. Mine had nice views over St Andrew’s Square & was well insulated from street noise. I particularly loved the bathroom, a room so often a compacted after thought in city hotels, but this one was relatively spacious with a lovely claw foot tub & window overlooking the square. Lots of thoughtful treats such as petit fours, great teas, well laden mini bar … & hair straighteners! The townhouse has a gym & spa, located in the subterranean former vaults. I didn’t use the gym, but it’s a sizeable space for a city hotel with a groovy backdrop, Pilates reformer & separate yoga studio. Additionally, a sauna, & cryotherapy chamber (which I tried out for novelty value - £50 for 3 minutes!). Spa staff were absolutely fantastic.
The hotel also operates as a members club, with preferential room rates & member only lounges part of the offer.
Overall, I had a very enjoyable, 5 star stay at this fledgling little sister to the legendary Auchterarder Grande Dame & would return & highly recommend.

We stayed for one night at the end of June in room 1.
This was a special trip to help celebrate my wife’s birthday and we went expecting the five star experience, and it took our breaths away.
The Team went above and beyond from the wonderful welcome, where our luggage was kindly taken from us and was in our room by the time we had checked in.
We were escorted to our room and everything was done to make sure we were comfortable, supported with hotel information and my wife’s birthday celebration was going to be perfect.

The room was outstanding, the bed and bedding superb, the bathroom was luxurious and spacious.

The Spa is amazing and my wife particularly loved the Cryo Chamber.

The fifth floor bar is stunning with a roof terrace to the front and the piece de resistance is the restaurant, this room is stunning, and the staff and food delivered too.

The location is fantastic and we parked at the nearby St James Quarter shopping centre car park, a secure car park that charged us £21 for overnight parking. With lifts and escalators from the car park to the ground level it is easy to navigate to the hotel from your car.

We cant wait to return to this outstanding hotel.

I’ve been quite surprised by reading some of the reviews (which I’m pleased I didn’t read before booking or they would have definitely put me off!) - the hotel has either listened to the feedback and acted promptly or there has been a minor blip perhaps in service.
We’re just returning from 2 lovely nights at the hotel. We had a large well proportioned room with a huge comfortable bed.
The staff were really lovely, engaging in conversation, checking us in well before check in time and taking our luggage until the room was ready.
I had the best breakfast I’d ever had with great smoothies, buckwheat crepes with salmon and granola. Admittedly the coffee was tepid one day, but was promptly replaced when we asked so no issue there.
We also had an evening meal there, my partner is allergic to onions and they brought him a menu that had been discussed with the chef with a tick against every meal he could have which was a lot better service than another high end restaurant we went to to the next day. The food was delicious and the liqueur coffees were again the best we’d ever had!
The roof top bar was fab, with the staff remembering our order from one day to the next.
The only small gripe we had was that we were charged service on top of every meal - so even though we paid for breakfast in advance, we were then charged a service charge each day and for the cleaning of the room without this being highlighted (unless I missed it in the small print), we didn’t want a turn down service but the cleaners did this on the second eve anyway. I would expect this for eve meals but I’ve not experienced this before for hotel breakfasts and servicing of the room.
I would highly recommend the hotel, but just be aware of the service charges

The attention to detail in the conversion of this bank building is simply superb.
You start with an iconic building in a superb location and appreciate it’s historical significance. You clearly use amazing interior designers, as well as the best of tradesmen who combine to produce something very special
The public rooms are amazing and the bedrooms superbly comfortable and well appointed.
The Spence restaurant was closed for some work when we were there however, we had breakfast in the Note Burning Room
Amazing surroundings and great breakfast, however I would suggest an improvement would be to make the print size of the menu a bit larger as it is very difficult to read
Final touch would be the introduction of valet parking . The hotel has three allocated spaces in the Saint James’s Centre which is circa five minutes walk away during the day, however at night time, due to the closure of public entrances is a so much more complicated exercise to exit and get back to the hotel.

We stayed at the Gleneagles Townhouse last week and it was a real treat. The hotel is beautiful. We stayed in the Master Bedroom which is probably one of the best rooms I have stayed in, very spacious and luxurious the bed was massive and very comfortable. There is a bath in the corner of the room and a separate shower, again probably one of the best showers I have seen. The rooftop bar is great for cocktails with stunning views and the two waitresses (sorry didn't get their names) were the nicest girls, all the staff were very welcoming and helpful. We had a meal in the Spence restaurant and was a bit disappointed with the meal but that may just have been teething problems with the hotel not long being opened. I would definitely like to return one day :) x

Lovely stay at the Townhouse. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. The room was beautifully decorated and even though we were in one of the smaller ones it felt very luxurious. Fab choice for a romantic night away. A cocktail or dram in the Lamplighters bar on roof terrace is a must. It is expensive and we felt that the breakfast choices were maybe a little over complicated and at just over £70 quite a lot for breakfast for 2. Overall though- 5 star experience. Dinner at the Spence was delicious and the setting perfect. Recommend staying for special occasion / romantic getaway.

The stay at the townhouse was the keystone of my partner's birthday trip to Edinburgh unfortunatley it fell short on a number of fronts. I'll start with the good points, the staff were all very pleasant and the building was stunning inside and out our room was the most beautiful we stayed in this week. Onwards to the not so great, I found thr staff whilst friendly didn't appear to have the inter departmental communication to make the seemless perfection I'd expect in Auchterarder happen a reality. I feel that there is a very jarring difference in staff uniforms between staff and supervisors some being very casual and others being in suits. Whilst the Spence was a visually stunning venue in which to done the food lacked a wow factor I would expect at the price point and.the service was lacking (a very large wait for the desert trolley) the cocktails up at lamplighters were excellent and the gym facilities were exemplary the choice to include the vault doors as part of the design of the facility in particular was excellent however my final bad point first came to light both in lamplighters and the wellness facility, I've stayed and worked in a wide array of accomodation and in anything four star and above it has been unnaceotable for staff to use personal mobile phones in guest facing areas both in lamplighters and the wellness facility I had to wait for a member of staff to finish on their device prior to dealing with them and I personally feel this is not how an establishment of this calibre should present itself. Alot of the staff seemed very new to luxury hospitality so hopefully with the passage of time some of these issues will be mitigated but given the proximity of marketing and price point to The Glen I expected better.

There are problems here, but lets begin with the positives. Beautiful building in a fantastic location. The rooms, may be small but they are beautifully appointed (although a waste paper bin wouldn't go amiss). There was a warm welcome at reception and the staff in the Lamplighters Terrace. I do agree with a recent review that the furniture for couples is not comfortable or what you would expect in a hotel of this standard.

Lets look at the disappointing aspects of the stay. The is a 5 star hotel that is associated with the magnificent Gleneagles, it comes with a hefty price so clearly only the best will do. This hotel has only a small amount of rooms, but when we came back from a shopping/sightseeing trip (away for a few hours) our room was not made up. When the room was made, there was a small amount of rubbish left behind. The service in the Spence, oh dear, where to start, the service is so slow, you genuinely feel like you are being ignored. My partner had three coffees, all of which were tepid because of the amount of time waiting for it to be served. I ordered a breakfast, nothing complicated, but it was delivered incorrectly. When I got the correct order some of it was inedible. I couldn't be bothered complaining, the moment had passed, it passed about half an hour before. The quality of the food served is nothing exceptional, just okay.

Gleneagles, take a look at yourself, if you charge a premium price, deliver a premium package.

Having stayed at the main Gleneagles many times over many decades I am well versed in the brand and ethos of Gleneagles. The new Townhouse is interesting and looks great, brilliant location and has some nice features such as the rooftop bar, but I think they need to work on the identity of this hotel a bit and decide who they are aiming it at, as well as iron out the service a bit. At check in for example I wasn’t told about any of the features of the hotel (such as the rooftop bar, gym or spa) I just happened to know about them already. I wasn’t shown where the restaurant was etc. The room of course was lovely (although small) because it’s brand new, so can’t really fault that. Bathroom lovely and toiletries and robes too. However the main restaurant is not that great. The dome feature is reminiscent of several other Edinburgh spaces and is very “cold” and echoey, the bar is large and busy/noisy, it’s very like The Dome in fact. With funky music in the background of the restaurant and bar it sets itself apart from Auchterarder and that’s a nice touch - but in trying to be different or hip and trendy they also maybe try too hard to the point that it doesn’t work so - for example - breakfast was all very brown and “burnt” style and bland in flavour in an attempt to be hip and perhaps different from the ivy across the road. Instead of just serving up a nice tasty breakfast. So if I was spending the same money again on a night at Gleneagles my money would be going to the original hotel at the moment as you get a lot more for it in Perthshire. The Edinburgh hotel has to work on its offering a lot more before it’s up to scratch.

Truly excellent location and amazing public spaces. No expense has been spared on this transformation. It is very much geared towards members so long standing Gleneagles customers may find the vibe more modern and less traditional. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a few issues with our room; namely lukewarm water for the bath, collapsing mirror on the dressing table and the wrong name written on the Happy Birthday card. These were mentioned and we were happy to receive a financial compensation from the manager. We scored it 8/10 but it was only its 2nd week of full operation so hopefully kinks will be ironed out in time. We found the restaurant beautiful though smelt strongly of fried food ( air extraction issue?) and the breakfast offer was too fancy for our taste. The Lamplighters rooftop bar is the star; beautiful space and great cocktails. Prices are extremely high as you would expect.
