This was without doubt the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. I paid £250 for a two night stay and it was filthy. Huge overflowing ashtrays greeted us either side of the main entrance and you could not have dinner in the hotel as a coach party was present so they said the dining facilty was not available. The bathroom was truly dirty and tiles cracked. Bedroom window had never been cleaned in years and was caked in dust. The bed was about the only thing that I would say was good. The staff were minimal but friendly enough. Truly awful value for money.

Booked the Britannia for an overnight stay whilst visiting Edinburgh to meet some ex colleagues for Christmas dinner and drinks. I really only used the hotel as a sleep over. The receptionist was nice on arrival and had upgraded my cheap room to one with windows as I guess they werent full. The room was decent enough for the price paid, it was clean, there was an iron and board in the room, tea and coffee (and bottle of water) and a desk. Also an extra portable heater. The bed was comfortable enough. The building is old therefore guests need to consider the layout of rooms and their windows etc may not be perfect or modern. The only suggestion would be a socket or USB point by the bed for phone charging. The one socket by the desk had to be used which was a little inconvenient. Hotel has lots of potential with a little investment in improvements. Not the best nor the worst hotel I've ever stayed at.

Myself and my wife had just recently gotten married in Gretna Green and we planned on visiting Edinburgh with another couple. They found this hotel and booked it via booking.com but we arrived before them as they were planning to arrive the next day. Upon arrival, the staff behind the desk seemed uninterested as people were waiting to be seen to while 3 of the staff were chatting amongst themselves. Once we paid and went to our room, we were greeted with dirty linens and dirty dishes outside of our door, making us think we actually had the wrong room. Once inside the room it wasn't any better with the double bed being hard and small. We also found a hair inside the toilet. We decided after 5 minutes of being in the room that we were not staying there so we went back down to the front desk to tell them we would like the booking refunded and we would find accommodation eslewhere (Which we did). The lady at the front tried to persuade me to stay but we were set on leaving. The manager left to go check our concerns and was gone for a good 15-20 minutes, so I don't know what he was doing. When he returned he again seemed uninterested and did not want to talk to me, even leaving at one point to go talk to another staff member while he was mid conversation with me and when he did return he again was uninterested and not friendly and he basically blew me off telling me I had to sort it out with booking.com and they wouldn't do anything to help that process. I was pretty upset at this point so myself and my wife left and found an incredible hotel somewhere else. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone and we will definitely never stay here again

The hotel is basic and tired, but what do you expect for the price. We had many disturbances through both nights with load guests returning from town at all hours. It would be helpful if the door closers were adjusted properly, so they controlled the door slamming. We will pay the extra money next time to stay elsewhere.

Met up with friends for a few festive pints prior to heading home to families. Hotel is in a great central location and was really affordable - £65.00 per night for a twin room was spot on. The decor is tired (in both the common areas and the room) - but, everything was in working order and was all operational. It’s no frills and a tad rough around the edges; but was decent for us.

Myself and my mother arrived at the Edinburgh Britannia hotel on the 24th August around midday. The checking wasn’t until around 4pm so we left the luggages in a storage (which the hotel manager was kind enough to accommodate, since they had a luggage room). We traveled from Essex for a week away in Scotland. We went to the castle and and came back to the hotel at 4.15pm, by then they had two coaches arrived and people were queuing to check in, we waited for our turn after collecting the luggages from the storage. I paid £300 over the counter at the reception and collected the door cards. We been told to follow the blue carpet and its the 4th floor, we went to the 4th floor but the room could be found we asked couple of staff members and they directed us to the room which was in the basement. We switched on the lights and found immediately that the main light was flickering, the room had a window that was sealed off and the pillows were key against the wall with no headboards. There were no air conditioning in the room either, I didnt even see a fan. Flickering light could have given anyone a headache or an epileptic fit this it self is a health and safety failure, not to mention the place looks like a construction site unorganised and paint buckets lying around in the walkways. Pure shambles. Now as per the booking made myself, although I probably didn’t pay attention I had booked a room without a window, the rest of the failures I cant help. My mother said let’s go and speak to the reception and try to get a different room, so we head over to the reception not even 2min in, we didn’t even sit down grabbed our luggages and went back to the reception. We mentioned the issues and they said you booked a room with no window, and they can fix the lighting, we asked for another room but the receptionist said they didnt have any. We definitely didn’t want to stay in that room, if I knew it’s an underground bunker I would have never gone for it. To this day they still don’t want to give me my £300, head office doesn’t answer the emails and the hotel manger has no common sense. I’ve been told this will be sorted, I thought sorting out meant giving my money back. That’s another failure from hotel manager who can’t explain things properly. The policy on cancellation was you can cancel before 2pm then you will get your money back. But the check in is at 4pm, how does that work, if I don’t like what was given to me for £300 and I only get to see it after 2pm when the cancellation policy kick in how is this any way a fair policy, and the hotel manager haven’t got a scooby so is the receptionist, extremely unethical business run by unethical people. I challenge the policy. I’ll be looking to push this further. These type of unethical business should be very closely looked at by the authorities. I want my money back.

Staff don't know what's going on, I had to wait at check-in for half an hour because the staff member said no payment had been made, which wasnt true. They don't tell you vital info about checking in. I had to go to reception 4 times as my key card wouldn't work, the light switches don't work, the shower fittings are old and rusty, random holes in wall filled in with polyfilla, graffiti in the lifts. And I was sworn at by the manager and accused of calling yesterday and swearing at them, which simply isn't true. Worst service I've ever had.

Start by saying check in time are late in afternoon 16.00. Looked this hotel as Edinburgh can be very busy at Christmas time. So we booked as you got parking at this hotel. However when we arrived as if we could get in slightly earlier, but the rude girl on front desk could only say 16.00 check in. Then she told us there was no parking as they were working on it in morning. This cause us more hassle trying to find parking close to hotel which was not easy. We got one 1.6miles away so had to taxi back and fro. Room was fine and situation of hotel was good to get to princess St. We were booked for two nights but we left after one as it was costing us more for taxis and extra cost on parking. AS the front desk make all the guests queue at 16.00 and there was alot and not guaranteed roo.s were ready it was a big disappointment start to our festive time in Edinburgh. We will not use this hotel even at the good rate and situation of hotel. Rude front desk staffing could have gave us warning of car parking situation.

Was around a 15 minuet walk from Haymarket Train station which was good. Entrance to hotel is down a steep hill which may not be suitable to all. Check in not until 4 but was able to leave luggage and check in after. About a 20/30 minuet walk to Princes Street/Christmas Market and a half an hour walk back from Edinburgh Castle to hotel. Check in fine, very little wait and the staff we did interact with were pleasant. Bedroom was a no window option. very basic. Bed was uncomfortable, i did not sleep well at all, mattress was thin and could feel the springs. There was an emergency exit light illuminated above the door, the only door, which kept the room quite bright. The bathroom was dated and dirty. Sime burns in the carpets Towels and bedding appeared clean and in good repair. Breakfast was fine. My partner got his moneys worth in portion sizes and said it was alright, good selection, but would not always be worth the £14pp if not incl in your stay and if you dont eat much. Again, check out was easy enough and passing staff were pleasant and friendly.
