We stayed here on the first night of a 10 day tour of Scotland (September 20, 2016). The room was lovely with all the necessary amenities. The hotel restaurant was Tony Singh's. We ate dinner there and that was good. Breakfast was fine but certainly not memorable. The location as many have noted is great. So why am I giving...

Booked the Apex in May for a 3 day break for Hogmanay after it was recommended to me. I have to say it's location is great but the room itself was a total disappointment. I had booked a double room and assumed all rooms had a view of the castle only to arrive and be given a basic room at...

I live right on the Scottish Borders in Northumberland so visited Edinburgh a lot. However my fiancé hadn't. We spent the most wonderful 3 days in this hotel. It was in the exact location we needed. Right by the castle, the illusion museum. Restaurants, shop's, everything we needed. The hotel itself was clean, rooms were beautiful and we got to keep...

A regular visitor here and really find the staff fabulous. Very disappointed that breakfast not served on the 5th floor anymore as was a great feature. Food served in restaurant was lovely, the burger was amazing.

We had a great stay - the hotel was very comfortable and very central. Be prepared for some noise at night - the area is lively at night. The breakfast was very good - lots of choice and we'll preared.

Myself and two teenage daughters had a lovely 3 night break in the Apex Grassmarket the first week in January. The hotel is very modern and clean and staff are most welcoming and helpful. We arrived at 9.30am having taken the early flight over and they took in our bags until our room was ready. They said they'd prioritise getting...

Not please with value for money, a great location but cold staff and not much warmer rooms! I would not recommend the brand nor site as I believe there are better and cheaper hotels in this lovely city.

I stayed here in mid January 2017. The best thing about this hotel is hands down the location. Located in the heart of Old Town on Grassmarket, it's so easy to navigate the city. It only takes about 15-20mins walk to get to New town with all of the shops and the Scottish national museum. First impressions were that the...

Excellent location and if you don't mind stairs, probably not too bad although a bit overpriced for an old hotel that has simply been given a quick face lift. The staff were fantastic, nothing too much trouble and the overpriced breakfast was good. Holy Hole in a Donut Batman, the stairs, just to get in there are stairs, to go...

We had Castle view rooms which was a bonus, The room was a little tired and bathroom needed a good clean. Apart from that we had a comfortable stay and would return. Staff were excellent and breakfast and Tony Singh restaurant experiences were top class with great service.

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
