Very average hostel, as hostels go. Facilities were clean and overall convenient. Excellent location right off of Edinburgh city center. Good proximity to the castle. Staff were especially great! All very pleasant and professional!!

My original review of Cowgate would have been negative -we found out that the front desk closed at midnight while we were on a train from Skye that did not arrive in Edinburgh until 1:00 and absolutely no one was answering the phone, then when we finally got there someone from the front desk on-call told us we were going...

Something important to me when staying in a hostel is the security/safety of the hostel. This hostel has a code system and then 2 doors to unlock to get to the rooms and I really appreciate that. I stayed in a 6 bedroom door and found the beds to be comfortable and the rooms to be clean. I would say...

Hostel was so good and in centre of city! Was such good value for money and had good facilities like wifi and good kitchen and showers. Had a great time and would definitely stay again thanks so much!

The location is amazing, right in the heart of the city and very close to all attractions. However, the building itself is very old, smelly and dirty. Very very basic furniture in the room (not even a desk or a chair). For the price we paid, I m sure we could have found something better.

Hi there, Thank you for your review, we understand that the building is becoming older and that we must keep on top o this. We are hoping to start renovating in the near future and this will take care of any ongoing issues at the moment. Kind regards, Dylan - Office Manager

The hostel has a good location - within walking distance of the train station, several convenience stores and the main town. But the rooms were exceedingly cold (the walls were freezing for some reason) even though the heater was working fine. Our stove and oven in the kitchen did not work, and when we entered the showers just after checking...

Stayed here for one night and was pleasantly surprised after reading bad reviews. Our twin room was very basic with just a set of bunk beds and a wooden stool but we were only sleeping here so it did the job. Staff on reception were friendly and explained how to enter the rooms as they're in a separate building. Had...

In all honesty we just stayed here because it was cheap after being out. Was just somwhere for us to get the head down for a few hours. I was extremely inebriated and was happy to fall into bed. Staff not very helpful mind you

Hi there, Thank you for taking the time to leave your review, in the city our accommodation can be great for some due to cheaper prices perhaps after a long day out. Feedback will be passed onto the staff also as this is not acceptable, thanks again for your feedback. Kind regards, Dylan - Office Manager

My family of 4 has been traveling the world for 2 months at the time we stayed in this, our 3rd Hostel. At the train station we schlepped our bags from the station for a 15 minute walk to our Hostel. It was in this really odd location on Cowgate street which is beneath the main streets above. Very cool...

I booked at Cowgate because it was close to the train station and that worked for the first night. I actually didn't even mind the rowdy drunks singing well into the night from the bar across the street. What didn't impress me was the building...common areas were rundown, dirty, and not welcoming, and the staff were not friendly. I left...

Staying in Old Town

Neighbourhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavoured souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
