Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel was a great find! It’s a fab base for seeing Edinburgh as close to lots of places. The room was small but had everything you need particularly liked being able to access my Netflix and Disney account on the TV. Beds very comfy. The toiletries in the bathroom were delightful. Lots of places to eat around the area. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Roughly £30 to the airport from the hotel in a taxi.

The Grassmarket Hotel is in an exceptional location and we managed to use this as our base for exploring the whole city without feeling any hassle. We stayed in a snug room and, whilst it was as advertised, we spent most of our time out exploring and the size was quite reasonable for our needs. I would warn that the bathroom door, a frosted glass piece, does little to offer privacy from those in the main area of the room. Having breakfast in the pub was a novel feature to our stay which we weren't expecting.

Great location & the quad room was spacious & overlooking the Main Street. It had double window system so no street noise. Room & bathroom were clean & plenty of towels. We had booked breakfast & I was shocked to find out it was served in the pub next door. It was not appropriate for families…..people drinking alcohol (9.30am) loud music & service was not great. While the cooked breakfast was good the “buffet” left a lot to be desired definitely not worth £15.

The location of the hotel is perfect, you cannot fault it. We stayed for two nights; night one was great. The second, however, wasn’t so much. We came back and found our toilet wasn’t working. We reported this to the front desk who initially told us they couldn’t do anything as they were fully booked, and then ‘suddenly’ found a room when we said this was unacceptable. The room we moved to was bigger, but worse. It was directly above the pub next door which played loud music until 3 am, rendering us unable to sleep. If the second night hadn’t happened I’d give the place 5 stars, but we left feeling a bit deflated after such a good first day.

Perfect location! Tons of restaurants and pubs in the heart of Edinburgh! There was a lift, which was helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean! A fun pub was downstairs. The staff was super helpful! I would stay here again and again.

When I first arrived, I thought this hotel was perfect. It’s funky and old, which I liked. My room was perfect for just me, but if you were a couple it could be crowded. The bed is all the way against the wall on one side, so getting in and out would not be ideal. For me, it was fine. The location is perfect. You can walk all over the city within 10-15 minute walk. Lots of shopping and restaurants nearby and there’s a pub connected. Ask for a quiet room if noise will bother you, as they play music every night of the week, and quite late on Friday and Saturday. My room was located far enough away it wasn’t a problem. There are lots of stairs and the elevator only goes so far. Pack light or be prepared. Yes, there was some old caulk in the bathroom, but I feel like this is inevitable in the UK. The windows are old, but the building is probably at least 100 years old, so I expected this. I honestly thought it was pretty charming. Unfortunately, i had to cut my stay short due to non-working A/C. My room got so hot by the second night I had to leave to a different hotel. I brought up the issue to staff after my first night and they couldn’t seem to fix it. I knew I couldn’t bare another night in an 80 degree room, so I checked out. I talked to the manager on duty, and emailed them and I did get a credit and refund. I’m thankful for this as I had 2 more nights in Edinburgh. If not for that issue, it would’ve been a perfect stay.

Funky hotel, very còmfy beds. Kind of a trek to get to rooms so if you are toting big luggage be warned. There are stairs. Location is very convenient to the castle, Biddys pub grub quite good. Carrot soup was mmm mmm good. Stephen at the front desk superb customer service, outgoing and friendly. Convenient to national museum, parks, etc.

Our least favorite Edinburgh hotel stay was this one. The location was beautiful, but that's about where the good things stop. Depending on the floor, getting to the rooms may require navigating a confusing maze of doors, hallways, and stairwells. You'll find your room to be too small for more than one person, with few storage options and limited control over the thermostat; we were either too hot or too cold much of the time. Weekends at the connected bar can be crowded, but there are a lot of other places to eat, shop, or have a pint at the end of the day. Thank goodness, much of our time was spent outside of our room. We probably would have paid a few extra pounds for a little more room and comfort, but if you're traveling alone and want to be close to the Grassmarket, you could certainly do worse.

We spent 4 nights here during Fringe. It was a wonderful location with good restaurants, shops and sites of interest right out the door. The rooms were nice, the staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast at Biddy’s nextdoor was great. This was our favorite hotel during our 2 week trip to Scotland.

Quirky hotel in a great location just down the hill from the castle. Stephen at the front desk was so friendly and helpful, offered directions, city map and helped with our bags. Room was small, but clean and comfortable. Shower was great! We did not have meals but there is a lively pub right through the lobby. Located on a great little block of eateries and a wonderful local market on Saturday morning where we found great handmade souvenirs. Overall a good find!
