Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful house and owners. We had the most beautiful view facing the ocean. We knew as soon as we met Sinead that we had made the right decision. She is a warm and friendly person and gave us all the info we needed. In this day and age with some B&B having automated check ins it was so nice to have the host greeting us with a smile. Exceptional room, breakfast and cleanliness. Would definitely recommend. Lissa and Alan Palmer

We read about Straven Guest House and decided it was the place for us. We managed to park on the road outside and left the car there for over 2 days with no problem. It was our first stay in Portobello and the ease with which we got into and out of Edinburgh on the bus means that we will probably stay there again, instead of the city centre. Portobello is charming and the b&b is conveniently located very close to the promenade and within a walkable distance from the centre of the suburb. Everyone has mentioned the cleanliness, comfort and hospitality of the accommodation and its owners and we can only agree. Breakfast was substantial and lasted us till early afternoon! We stayed in the large superking room on the first floor, which was perfect, and the area was very peaceful. Portobello has several eateries and drinkeries and we would heartily recommend it and Straven Guest House as a base for the area, as well as the capital.

Straven Guest House is one of the best places we've stayed. The house is beautiful and in a lovely area (our favorite in Edinburgh) close to the sea, restaurants, bus stop to the city, etc. Our room was comfortable, clean, peaceful, and the homemade breakfast was delicious. Sinead and Chris are warm, kind, friendly, and made us feel so welcome. Thank you for a memorable stay and for all the great tips! Ela and Zack

The moment I stepped in, Straven Guesthouse became one of my two favourite hotels/b&bs in the UK. (The Fossil Tree in Blackpool is the other one.) Sinead and Chris are the warmest, most welcoming hosts in the world and their beautiful guest house really feels like a home away from home. Plus, a huge thumbs up to the recycling bins in their foyer. The made-to-order breakfast at Straven was fresh and so plentiful that it kept one going well into the afternoon. And when hunger finally catches you, there are multiple charming restaurants in the neighbourhood – as well as lovely pubs, cafes, second-hand shops, and even a large independent bookstore. You could easily spend your entire holiday in Portobello without ever going to central Edinburgh, especially if you enjoy the calm of the beach more than the crowds. And should you choose to do so, I warmly recommend that you book a room at Straven Guesthouse.

A very warm welcome from the start. Sinead is full of local knowledge and put me right at ease. Always personable, with a cheery chat in the morning before another escapade. A solo adventure felt more like visiting a home from home. The room was spotless, spacious with plenty of creature comforts. Thank you Sinead and Chris for your wonderful hospitality, you have made my first visit to Edinburgh that but more special

This is one of those places you want to keep high on your B&B list. I could not fault it. About 30secs from beach, 5 minutes from shops/pubs. The room was very clean and tidy, and quiet. The shower was a good size. The Breakfast was excellent, the only thing I could fault about it was there were no beans but I suspect if I had asked it would have been supplied, so actually, my fault for not asking. Unfortunately I can't remember the couples names but they were so nice, the lass was very helpful and cheery and the lad was the same. For a young couple they have got this right. I would highly recommend and certainly will book again.

One of the best places we have ever stayed in, Sinead and Chris were amazing hosts with plenty of chat & banter while there. They were very informative with lots of recommendations and suggestions for our visit. Rooms were pristine and the breakfast second to none. The location near the Promenade was an added bonus. Would highly recommend for anyone wishing to stay here. Jacinta & Denis.

My wife and I spent a few days at the Straven Guest house for our 30th anniversary this year. Sinead and Chris were perfect hosts. The rooms clean and comfortable and the beach literally a 30 second walk from the front door. We both highly recommend a visit.
