Where does one start? All the essentials are covered in spades.....location, comfort, food, etc. But it's really about the experience here. Erlend is an unusual man, in the best possible way. And he has created an unusual environment for his guests. Where else might you find things like: The singing chairs? Or the Amore- a- Tron? Or the tuba that...

The owners are a remarkable couple. The breakfast is lovely. There is eccentricity galore - musical instruments adorn the walls - there are labeled switches which, when switched, cause music or songs to emanate from hidden speakers. Friendly and select - on arrival we were served with tea in the drawing room - antique china and real silverware. A must...

I originally stayed at 2 Cambridge St with Erland and Hélène Coulston with my wife on our last holiday before we our 1st child was born, and I still have incredible memories of our incredible stay under the grey Lothian skies. As i was passing through Edinburgh for a night, I decided to stay again at this fantastic and unique...

Where to start. #2 Cambridge is centrally located beneath the Castle Walls, so you are in walking distance of all of the sites. The B&B is thoughtfully decorated to evoke a more elegant, gentile time, which suits the city of Edinburgh to a tee. Speaking of tea, upon arrival, Erlend and Helene offered us tea in beautiful china cups from...

2 Cambridge Street is a truly wonderful place to stay. It's design is unlike anywhere I've visited... The attention to detail is extraordinary. Each room is artfully crafted to almost tell a story... It's beguiling. Add to this the most generous and welcoming of hosts in Erlende and Helene and you have a perfect package. It's utterly beautiful and a breakfast...

We absolutely loved staying in this most original b&b. We had the place to ourselves with our two daughters. The breakfast first prepared by Zoe and then by the fascinating Erlend was wonderful. The house is full of Erlend's inventions and beautiful antiques which you could spend days looking at. What a special place and thank you Erlend i sincerley...

I was brought to 2 Cambridge Street as a surprise by my girlfriend, I thought we were going to stay in a youth hostel. It’s imposing Victorian façade and secluded position right in the heart of the city was intimidating but to the trained eye the brass plaques attached to the iron railings and a hand eruditely holding a cigarette...

Despite still being asked for ID to buy a cheap bottle of plonk CD turned 30 in January of 2015 and AB promised her a weekend away. AB had a quandary, whilst CD is incredibly beautiful, fascinatingly intellectual, she is also, slightly, well, unusual, many would say 'interesting.' A weekend away in an average hotel would not cut the mustard....

This has to be one of the best places to stay in Edinburgh. The owners have two guest bedrooms in their town house and it's like no other place we've ever stayed in. They have a quirky sense of humour and the place is full of gadgets and gizmos, from a miniature movie house to a row of singing cinema...

Our stay at 2 Cambridge Street was perfect. This was our first time in Edinburgh and I could not believe how convenient the location was with a view of Edinburgh Castle from the doorstep. Erlend and Helene are the most kind and accommodating hosts and nothing was too much trouble for them. The rooms are beautiful and the atmosphere tranquil....

Staying in West End

Neighbourhood Profile
West End
Prevailing winds meant that most cities that grew in industrial Britain had their most desirable neighbourhoods to the west – upwind of factory fumes. Edinburgh was no exception, with its wealthiest citizens settling in its West End and leaving behind grand Georgian townhouses, private gardens and genteel crescents. These backstreets remain as dignified and sleepy as ever, and most of the action here lies along the district’s busy main roads. Lothian Road connects to southern Edinburgh and harbors a vague entertainment district: three theatres and the city’s main indie cinema. All attract a select crowd, the sort who appreciate the Saturday Edinburgh’s Farmers’ Market around the corner. The West End’s other great thoroughfare, Shandwick Place, is dominated by trams trundling out to the suburbs and airport, and shoppers picking up last-minute items before hopping aboard.
