Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This place is amazing. The hosts are genuine, genial & can’t do enough for you in a very understated way. The interior is like stepping into a classy steam punk Victoriana immersive plastic free glorious experience. Superb breakfast too!!

I'm trying to avoid all the positives from other contributors, so suffice to say, that all the positive comments are 100% correct; any negative ones are ridiculous- the place is enigmatic, intriguing & beautiful! Unfortunately we did not chat with Helene at length, but Erland is fascinating & charming; nothing is too much trouble. I wish we'd had more than 2 nights, but as a firm believer that "life is too short" to go back to the same place twice, rest assured, we will be back here! 30 years + since our last visit to Edinburgh, we're already looking forward to being back here at Cambridge St, & the fair city too!

What good fortune! As I searched for a B & B in Edinburgh within walking distance of Usher Hall to that I could attend orchestra concerts, I had not imagined that I would find the perfect location. Add a view of the Edinburgh Castle, one minute from the concert hall, across the street from a fine restaurant. That is the B & B at 2 Cambridge Street. After three concerts and five nights there, the warm welcome provided by the Cloustons is similar to was not unlike visiting friends -- friends who are well located, clever, thoughtful, and accommodating. The beauty of the surroundings, and the wonderful breakfasts served in a charming library with candles and fireplace aglow, were matched by the thoughtfulness and their discreet attention to what might interest me or my needs. A suggestion for a rainy day -- off to the museum! Organ music on Sunday? Erlend found two possibilities within walking distance. I cannot forget to mention Hélène's homemade bread, as well mystery starters for each breakfast. The memory of the best possible yogurt with marvelous fruit has traveled home with me. A tea to welcome me at the end of the day, if I wanted! My dream -- a return to Scotland, and another stay at 2 Cambridge Street.

I cannot say enough great things about this B&B. The room, the quirks, the breakfast, all of them were spectacular. But I think the greatest thing about it is the hosts, Erlend and Helene. They were so kind and genuinely interested in making sure we had a great stay. I had a warm pan warming my bed every night when we returned from walking all day in the cold. They made us individual breakfasts every morning from an amazing list of choices. We were offered tea or coffee each night when we returned back. There was another lovely couple we befriended in the B&B who we ate with every morning and even went out for a night of traditional music at a pub that Erlend recommended. The room and home is beautiful and has all these great quirky touches. The location is perfect for getting out and exploring Edinburgh with an amazing view of the castle right out the front door. I cannot say enough about this place and will try to stay here every time I am in Edinburgh.

Erlend and Helene are fantastic hosts - warm, attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. Their interest in people visiting Edinburgh is very genuine and they go out of their way to make sure that you have a great time in their fantastic 'trapped in time' flat a.k.a as The Dynamite Club (Erlend will tell you why).

Title says it all. Just book it! A most charming and wonderfully eccentric host. Where else can you dance the Argentine tango played at the flick of a switch on a wall hanging tuba??? Don't let our host kid you that the breakfast is merely "Semi" gourmet. It's full bodied creative gourmet! We loved it!

Superb location..beautifully maintained and with the most gracious hosts. After a long and exhausting flight we arrived at 2 Cambridge Street and were welcomed by Mr. Clouston the owner of this wonderful B&B. It was like staying with a good friend...great room with fascinating artifacts everywhere...modern bathroom and elegant and scrumptious breakfasts . Freshly squeezed orange juice, yummy starters followed by a filling choice of the main breakfast entree. Mr. Clouston and his elegant French wife, were such fascinating and interesting people..we wished we could have spent more time with them. But on holiday, there is always so much to see and do. The location of this B&B is truly very central...the imposing Edinburgh castle looms to the left in plain sight..great restaurants easily accessible, interesting fellow guests...truly a wonderful first experience in Edinburgh.

There is probably little to say that hasn't already been said, this place is wonderful!! Sadly Helene was in France when we stayed but we were very well cared for by Erlend. The room was gorgeous, the bathroom was small but had everything necessary, including lots of shower space. The flat is full of attractive, interesting things, we particularly fell in love with the light in our room, but it didn't fit in our case. The "inventions" were a hoot and not to be missed, the one over our bed I video'd on my phone, much to the amusement of friends at home. Candlelit breakfast was an absolute treat, on our last day we had an "amuse" of acacia honey, pistachio nuts and yoghurt, another day it was yoghurt with granola, for "mains" avocado, poached egg and tomatoes, which I had twice because I loved it so much first time. Amazingly there's no set time for breakfast, it's arranged to suit the guests, who knew B&Bs did this? It's perfectly placed for both Old and New Town, we did both, minutes away and you're in the heart of either. We could rave about the place for ages but suffice it to say that we wouldn't consider going anywhere else.

When planning our trip to Edinburgh many months ago, I chose two Guest Houses. For the first few days of our holiday I chose one closer to the New Town. For the last few days I chose one closer to the Old Town. This was 2 Cambridge Street where we stayed three nights. I chose it based on excellent reviews and its uniqueness. Erlend and Hélène are fantastic hosts committed to their guests having a wonderful experience. Their home is a mixture of beautiful furnishings, exquisite period details, quirky accessories and interesting inventions of Erlend. The 14-foot ceilings were stunning! My husband John enjoyed trying Erlend’s various musical inventions (e.g. an Amor-a-tron above our bed). I enjoyed the soothing music playing in our room from the vintage style radio. If you’re looking for an American style large bathroom, this isn’t the place for you. But if you’d like to experience old world charm, history and a gentler way of life look no further. Breakfasts deliciously prepared by Hélène and impeccably served by Erlend were especially memorable. The table was set beautifully with linens, silver, china and crystal. This was not your typical Scottish breakfast. Hélène’s French background was evident in the dishes she prepared. We loved her Cheese and Lemon Omelette so much we requested it two days in a row! The charming setting, perfect presentation, delicious food and gracious service made breakfast a superb start to the day. Erlend and Hélène offered several suggestions for restaurants and activities. We enjoyed their recommendation of L'Etoile Salon de Tea at 44 West Port for several delicious lunches. Another recommendation to visit the National Museum of Scotland was a highlight for us. It has a great mix of historic, modern and interactive exhibits. We could have spent days there. The day before we had to leave we needed to check in on-line. Not having a device with us, Erlend kindly let us use his personal computer. We experienced some difficulties with the airline’s process and became a bit frustrated so Erlend offered to make tea. Having tea and biscuits presented to us greatly reduced our stress level. We appreciated this kindness as well as being able to use his computer. We had a very early flight the next morning and would have to miss breakfast. Hélène was so kind to prepare us a “picnic” of sandwiches, fruit, boiled eggs and chocolate to take away in the “wee” hours of the morning - which we truly appreciated. Our stay at 2 Cambridge Street was the perfect ending to our Edinburgh holiday. We left with fond memories of such wonderful hospitality.
