Our annual trip to Aviemore's Pine Bank Chalets, but this time staying in the new Osprey chalet. And we can't fault it! Beautifully equipped Kitchen/diner on the ground floor, together with a bedroom (huge bed, TV,) a WC/shower room and an outside patio. Upstairs is a living area with settee, chairs, log burner, another TV, balcony overlooking the mountain behind the village and an adjoining sauna area with shower and a huge bath. Negotiate the steps down to the road and your are 50 metres from the best pub in town, and right by the bridge over the river Spey for access to some stunning walks.

Ten years later and we still love returning to PBC. Being up in Aviemore at New Year is my favourite holiday of the year, there are so many things to see and do as well as it being the perfect place to relax. The lodge is always gleaming and very well maintained, with many helpful accessorises on hand for our stay. From kitchen scales to Tupperware, not to mention dishwasher tablets. The lodges have it all. Along with the Christmas decorations and the super comfy bed, all of these things help make our stay so special and comfortable. The on site gym is an added bonus that my partner loves using every day, it’s very well equipped, very clean and tidy. Simon is also always on hand if you need anything during your stay. This trip we visited the Ancient Forest Twi-LIGHTS display at Landmark, it was fantastic. We enjoyed a chilled walk to the Green Loch and not to mention a stay at PBC is not complete without visiting our old favourites the Old Bridge Inn and the Coffee Corner for a nice bowl of soup, perfect on a cool winters day. There is a pizza van that comes to the Old Bridge Inn so you literally have pizza right at the lodge doorstep, win win !! Thanks Simon and Tanja for making each stay so special. See you next time 🥳

Have been staying here for many years now alternating Xmas and new year and different lodges and have loved every stay . This year we stayed in the Braeriach lodge which was the smallest one we have stayed in but it was only the 2 of us . It was clean cosy and had everything we needed for our stay . The owners Simon and Tanya are very friendly can’t do enough for you . Booked Spey lodge for Xmas 2024 with the family which is a stunning lodge , so looking forward to it . You have to book early as it’s very popular I totally recommend staying here it’s beautiful.

Stayed in the spey lodge cabin which was 5 star! All the furnishings fittings and attention to detail were outstanding. Everything catered for and a nice sauna to finish the day. Location is 5 minutes walk from town sits nicely next to the river with the pub just along the road. Couldn't fault it. Friendly owners who really put everything into making your stay extra special. You won't be disappointed 🙌

Been staying at Pine Banks for many, many years now. We have never not had a nice time and we continue to enjoy and appreciate the developments and improvements that Simon and Tanja make to the site since they took it over. Over the years we have brought our extended family to also stay in lodges near to our own and they have all loved the place. Normally we stay in Cairntoul, but for Christmas we stayed in one of the superior lodges 'Bynack' as we were accompanied by my elderly Mum. On arrival we were pleased to find a small Christmas tree, lovely decorations and some tasty treats. This made us feel very welcome and Christmassy, important as it was our first Christmas not at home. Everything in the lodge was clean, working and was very warm and comfortable. We made good use of the wood-burner and having an outside space with a view for those mulled wine nights was perfect. A train runs across the rear of the properly, but these are sporadic and really we didn't really notice them much at all. We were blessed with a picture perfect white Christmas and enjoyed meals at our regular haunts including the nearby Old Bridge and the Cairngorm Hotel. somewhere I've visited since the late 80s. We made our usual visit to the Reindeer Centre, Cairngorm Mountain and Speyside Centre. For Christmas dinner we went to the Boat Hotel at Boat of Garten, although our return was nearly hampered by heavy snowfall. Bynack is located up some fairly steep steps, so do bear that in mind from an accessibility point of view, Mum just about managed it. Everything we needed was available to cook Christmas food. When we left at the end of our week, we were caught up in a major snow incident on the A9 for four hours. This meant we were forced to brave an unscheduled return to Aviemore until the snow cleared. I called Simon from the A9 and asked if any lodge was available for one night, until we could return home to London. Simon was incredibly helpful and compassionate and by the time we got back to the village he had found a flat on site for us all to stay in for one extra night at a very reasonable rate. He also came in person to see us to check we were all ok and to bring us logs after our snowy ordeal trapped up on the road. We hugely appreciated this level of courtesy and service and it is for these kinds of reasons we have been regulars at Pine Banks (and will continue to be) for so many years now, thanks Pine Banks! Recommended. Shaun and Mike (and Mum!)

Beautiful setting, comfortable beds, amazing shower and bath and a wood burner. We stayed in Sheilings, part of the Victorian Lodge. The kids had their own room. Our bed was very comfortable and it was immaculately decorated. Kitchen had everything it needed and it was lovely to warm up infront of the wood burner after a days walking. The bath and shower were amazing and I'll be back just for them!! Bit pricey but lovely for a few days break away. If it had been a bit cheaper we would have been able to stay longer.

We stayed in the Spey lodge as a family of 4 with 2 very young kids. The lodges are beautiful and for the most part are also very clean. This is the 3rd time we’ve stayed at pine bank chalets but we won’t be back. The walls where the bins are in the kitchen are splattered with all sorts, a wipe clean is all that’s required. There were dirty plates in the drawer that were covered with crumbs and bits of food. The kitchen cupboard doors don’t close properly and are in need of repair. There’s also one part of the kitchen which doesn’t have a door on it at all, not sure if that’s on purpose or not but it looks silly. Cob webs in the lights and beams, it’s high ceilings but doesn’t take much to dust the cobwebs. The couch is super uncomfortable and is covered in stains. We think it’s the same couch as the macdui lodge which we also found super uncomfortable. My in-laws were staying in one of the new lodges and said they also had the same uncomfortable couch so it’s not just us! The Christmas decorations were a bit poor and a winter blanket was strategically placed in the couch to hide yet more stains. There was no tv in the master bedroom so we couldn’t watch tv in bed either, we were stuck with the couch. The Christmas decorations included wooden candle holders but there was no candles anywhere to put in them which rendered them useless. The under floor heating doesn’t seem to work in the back 2 bedrooms where the kids were sleeping, we take a thermometer that doubles as a nightlight and their rooms were sitting at 16 degrees when the doors were shut and that’s with the heating turned all the way up. We stayed for 3 nights and on our second day we had been out in the morning and returned to the lodge for the kids afternoon naps only to find a key in the door and when we entered the lodge a stranger was poking around in the cupboard - turns out it was an engineer to fix the heat pump. I had 1 missed call on my phone, no voicemail, no text message, no email. The missed call was apparently someone from pine bank telling me they needed access but when I didn’t answer they decided to let the guy in anyway without our knowledge or permission for an issue that clearly wasn’t an emergency and nobody from pine bank was there to supervise him, the engineer could have been rummaging around in our stuff, stealing valuables or god knows what. If we hadn’t happened to come back when he was there we wouldn’t have had a clue that anyone was ever in our lodge. That is just completely unacceptable. When I contacted Simon to complain I was told he made a judgement call to let the engineer in and that was basically that. I didn’t feel safe there with my family for the rest of our trip, who knows who these people are letting roam around the lodge without your knowledge. I couldn’t possibly trust them with our safety again. What if we were all taking a nap, didn’t hear anyone knocking at the door and woke up to a complete stranger in the lodge with us!! Madness. Simon’s response really irritated me, he didn’t seem to think it was a big deal but it’s a huge deal and ruined our trip. The issue didn’t appear to be an emergency so it could have waited, and even if it was an emergency, we should have been informed if there was an issue with the heat pump particularly since we had a 2 year old and a 6 month old with us and there should have been safe guards in place such as the engineer being supervised by a member of staff when we weren’t there. I also contacted Simon before arriving to ask if there were any Christmas events on in the area and he didn’t give me any new information and more or less told me to Google it. The lodges are incredibly expensive and whilst they are outstanding lodges they are not quite clean enough and the service is definitely not good enough. For that price, I would expect Simon to research what’s on, contact local businesses and get me the relevant details as they live in the area and should have better access to that information. I would also expect some sort of welcome package as well, like a wee carton of milk, breakfast cereals and other necessities but there’s nothing like that. There’s also about 40 light switches, each individual spotlight seems to have its own switch which was pretty annoying. There are a lot of lodges on that land so they’re packed in like sardines. We had full view of the living room in the lodge next to us when we were entering our lodge. They’ve done their best to provide privacy but there’s not really any outside space to sit at. There’s a little balcony bit with a table and chairs but it’s tiny and the Spey lodge balcony is right next to huge trees which is obviously for privacy but also blocks a lot of the sunlight in summer I’d imagine. Wouldn’t go to these lodges in the summer (we went in June last year and the beds still had thick winter duvets on!), they’re definitely equipped for winter. They would be worth the money if the service and cleanliness were impeccable but unfortunately they’re not, the service in particular is really pretty poor. Really disappointed as it’s the best accommodation in Aviemore by a million miles but sadly highland accommodation always falls short no matter how much you pay. Definitely won’t be back as we just weren’t safe.

Response from Simon Hughes, General Manager at Pine Bank Chalets

Hi Gillian. It was a great shame to read this lengthy review this morning. It's come quite out of the blue, with the exception of the engineer visit none of the above was brought to our attention during your stay. You did email me regarding the engineer and in that email, and I quote, you said "Hi Simon, We’re arrived at the lodge yesterday and everything is great". With such a ling list of grievances I'm surprised that you didn't get in touch directly to discuss this. Thankfully your views are extremely rare and we are pleased to welcome so many guests back time and time again, particularly to Spey Lodge. With regards the engineer visit this was unfortunate timing. I was called on the morning in question by the heat pump supplier to say an engineer was on the way to us. Unfortunately we were given no notice of the visit and we tried several times to contact you whilst you were out. I tried to re-schedule the engineer, however the next date was into the New Year and we were full from your stay till January. The intermittent fault is of no risk but did need to be investigated. As such I made a judgement to allow the engineer access. We've used him for over 6 yrs and is trusted. I'm sorry that you disagreed with my decision. We always try and schedule such visits when lodges are empty or if guests are in we usually are given enough notice to give prior warning. On this occasion it didn't work out as planned. This isn't the way we would want maintenance visits to be handled and I do apologise if it caused so much concern. I did respond to your email explaining this and heard nothing more. As far as my service goes, again I'm sorry you felt this fell short. I did my best to look for activities for you and we also made sure the lodges were ready early for you so as you could get to the first activity you'd booked. I'm not a concierge, we run a self catering business and I did offer what advice I could. With little idea of what you as a family enjoy doing it's not easy to make recommendations but I did my best with this. Thankfully your comments aren't reflective of the majority of our guests. I will of course take the comments on board, it's a shame you didn't speak with me at the time but chose the option of writing this from home. Kind regards Simon

WOW!! We booked a 10 night stay in the Braeriach cabin to celebrate our 25th Anniversary and what a fantastic cabin it is! When we first walked in the heating was on and it was a comfortable 21c,which was very welcome after a 600 mile drive during the cold spell of weather. The cabin was very clean, well equipped and very cosy. The bed was super comfy. We honestly were so impressed and will be returning in the future.

We spent a lovely few days in Eagle Lodge! They really have thought of everything in the chalets! It is finished to a very high standard and the wooden panels give a real sense of cosiness. The two areas in the living space upstairs are fantastic and the wood burning stove just makes it a wonderfully calming experience.

We had a fantastic stay in Dulnain Lodge and loved how close it is to all the amenities in Aviemore. The bed was really comfortable and the bathroom really good, with a powerful shower. The train runs close by but that didn't bother us. Lovely wooded feel to the chalet. We enjoyed walking to the pub next door and local restaurants in the evenings. We plan to return as there is so much more to enjoy in Aviemore and the Cairngorms.
