Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My review is for Mac Donald Spey valley resorts. First of all, You don’t get what you book. I want you to be very much aware of this before you come here . After paying for a family of 4 adults with 2 children, we get to enter a very old building apt with old floor carpet , yesteryear furnitures and extremely bad toilet in first floor . Toilet had bath which was clogged , western commode flushs only on backside and no flow on the front . Toilet seat cover doesn’t stay when sitting n falls over you .flow n force of water is poor .I am very disappointed because they look like some old govt buildings unrenovated ironically rented as stay in a resort . Please be aware never to book 3 bedroom patios. Ours was no 15 and when I expressed my displeasure they also have the audacity to tell me that I should have asked for renovated accommodation. Who on earth would know that they hv to ask for such a thing , when you pay around 650 pounds for a 3 night stay . Disgusting . I feel like suing these people for cheating us . But the review here is important to help others like me , who would be disappointed to land here to this when they see these patio apartments .

I was extremely reluctant to post this due to not wanting to add further stress to my parents. It really was absolutely terrible. 1. Extortionate electricity charges at 40p per unit. 2. Chalet was filthy. 3.Pool closed yet again and when it did eventually reopen no towels. Many other issues but these are main concerns. Whilst the blonde polish lady was trying her best the others were not for helping. We actually cleaned the lodge on arrival as it was thick of dust and dirty we never once seen a housekeeper which lead us to believe they don't have any. . The whole place is very run down and sad. Pool was closed due to a boiler fault again. We then had to go to Hotel to swim about 2 miles away . the kids loved this pool as the slide and sea wave machine was fantastic but not ideal for older folk especially because yet another Jacuzzi wasn't working which is standard for MacDonald Resorts it seems. We have been coming here for a very long time and it really is worse by the year, the couple that run the place are struggling badly and at first seemed helpful but they were actually just gloating with the superiority not professional by any means. We do not even want to come back in October so well done .

Was a bit wary reading some reviews especially after paying but surely you would go to reception and ask to be moved if that bad ? We went with 3 children (8,9,13)and can’t fault our chalet (24) . had great stay chalet spotless yes the pool was closed but went every day to Macdonald’s hotel and used theirs free and towels supplied Electricity was included and was really warm Definitely come back again

After reading the horrific recent reviews, we were anxious about bringing our family to this resort. There was no need to worry, there is very much room for improvement here but we have had a nice family break. On arrival we were warmly welcomed by the staff on reception and given the key to our cabin. We were advised upon check in we would not have additional electricity charges to pay as it’s included in the platform we booked through (Hotels.com) As previous reviews have said, the swimming pool has been closed throughout our stay. Although this is disappointing we were provided with towels and have free access to the pool in the other Macdonald resort in Aviemore. The bar and restaurant are open and look inviting, although we have not eaten here so couldn’t comment on the food. The cabin itself is ok, nice living area which was clean. The double bedroom was clean and comfortable and the kitchen was well equipped and had plenty utensils/cutlery/glasses etc. The second bedroom was not too great, there was mould along the bottom of the wall and behind the blind, there is no wall heater in this room which is probably the cause of this developing. This is something I think should be actioned by maintenance urgently. In general the whole cabin could be doing with a freshen up, the location is around 20 mins walking or 5 mins on the bus to the centre of Aviemore and is in a lovely quiet setting. The staff have been fantastic and couldn’t do enough for you.

We stayed in a small log cabin. It was absolutely filthy. There was dust in the bedrooms that had obviously been there for years. We had to vaccum the bunk beds to feel comfortable staying there. The cabin is very tired with paint flaking, old carpets and furniture. The cabin stank of dogs and the vaccum had a very foul odor. The dishes all had a strange greasy film over them. We won't be coming back.

Just returned from a week stay. Agree with other reviews about pool. Was only open two days during our stay and then it was very cold. I think they are reducing the boiler because of finances. No discount offered as compensation. Also kitchen cupboards mostly empty . Chalets very cold and electric charges crazy. been going here for 30 years plus. Never known it this bad. Lack of staff. Pool always shut. Limited menu in clubhouse. No towels for pool when it did open on odd occasion. Only good thing is the F&B manager from Poland. Great asset to an otherwise sad state of affairs

Stayed in Spey Apartment ,myself and grandson ,and would have given the place 4 star if it hadn’t have been for the electric charge. Bedroom spacious and comfortable. Big lounge with fold down bed leading to well equipped kitchen. Conservatory off the lounge with grass area in front. Ideal for 2 people but might have been a bit cramped for 4 people for a week. Unfortunately something was wrong with temperature control on pool and it was 25 deg for the week which was too cold for me and towels were a bit scarce. I used the swimming pool in Aviemore which was much more suitable for children. During the week I switched off the porch and conservatory heaters, I did not use the oven, grill or hob because I brought my own air fryer and I did not use the dishwasher. Most showers were taken at the swimming pool so the hot water used was minimal. Despite all this the electricity charge was £96 for the week which roughly equates to £5000 per annum. Thank goodness I wasn’t in the Topsider where the average electricity bill was £227 per week, nearly £12,000 per annum !!! Macdonald need to address this urgently to avoid other customers getting ripped off. Owners already pay over the top in maintenance fees and shouldn’t need to pay excessive electricity fees.

Stayed here for 5 days. Apartment was ok. Wi-Fi absolutely appalling. No hot water to have a bath. Had to boil a kettle for to do dishes. Shall not be staying here again anytime soon. Have been in other Spey valley resorts and they have had hot water.

We stayed in the Log cabins, close to reception/bar/pool. Cabins fine for us as we were only their for three nights and had our dogs, enough room for two people, cosy is how i would put it. Maybe in need of a little tlc but as we have dogs fine for us. Could have done with a DVD player as tv reception was a bit hit and miss on one night, gave up in the end. Unfortunately pool not in use or jacuzzi. Bar was fine, quiet when we were their. Did use gym that was good to have. Not sure about electricity charge leaflet mentioned, asked reception about any extra to pay when we left and they said no so will have to wait and see if i get charged. Would stay there again but would check pool working. Same Spey valley resort, probably different accommodation. Dogs loved the area.

5 Grandkids, pool not open for first 3 days and then too cold for next 2 days. Alternative pool only open in the morning. Stayed in a Morlich and paid £180 for electricity and £50 for logs. They charge 40p per unit!! They say we used nearly 500 units, check how much you use at home!
