Overall we had a nice stay, this is not a fancy or impressive 4 star hotel but it is comfortable and clean and good for families. It’s a good location for Aviemore and the surrounding area, with just a couple of minutes walk into the Main Street.

Rooms are fine, could do with a wee upgrade but nonetheless they are comfortable and a good size. Bathrobe and slippers provided and Elemis toiletries along with bottled water.

Pool is good for families and easy to access. We just went down in our swimwear and used our bathrobes rather than taking towels or remember to have £5 for a deposit.

Check in and check out was fine, no problems. The Hotels and layout is a bit confusing until you find your bearings.

We ate in both the Italian and Aspects, the £50 allowance was fine and we ate well in both. Bread platter in the Italian was fairly basic and Pizza toppings could have been a bit more generous but the bruschetta and mushroom porcini risotto was delicious. Aspects again was good, the feather blade was excellent and a decent cheeseboard. Breakfast was good, the usual buffet of hot and cold set up and actually a decent and quick toaster which is rare.

Sadly the service is where we had the most issues in all areas. We waited ages to get seated in both restaurants and there is a lack of senior management to oversee things. We also waited ages to order. They seem to have plenty of staff but some are busier than others, there was a lack of consistency with service and breakfast on the first day being nothing short of a shambles which is odd when the only thing you need to order is tea and coffee!! We had a pre dinner drink in the lounge just next to Aspects but the girl behind the bar was so busy on her phone she never kept the bar clear from the dirty glasses being brought through from the restaurant and seemed to throw every bottle in the bottle bin creating a crash every time, not really a nice and relaxing atmosphere for a pre dinner drink.

A little refurbishment and and some staff training would go along way.

We would probably return if visiting this area again.

Having booked the Morlich hotel we were advised that as it was a quiet period we were being reallocated a room at the Highland hotel. Our room was upgraded so that was very nice. It was spacious and adequate, the king bed was rather soft for our liking, but as it was only for two nights it wasn’t a problem. At this time with COVID there is no house cleaning for the first four days, but again not a problem, if you require anything you just ask at reception. OK the hotel is showing signs of old age and could be doing with an upgrade but it shouldn’t put you off visiting.

We were on a DB&B rate, breakfast was good and you could essentially have as little or much as you wanted. Dinner at Aspects was good although not a great choice, we could have done with two or three more choices for the main meal. But what we did have was very nice.

We didn’t use any of the facilities so can’t comment on pools etc. Aviemore is great for the outdoors and if you enjoy walking there are numerous walks, both easy and bit more difficult. We always used to use the Hilton Coylumbridge but not since Britannia took it over and we will be back at MacDonald’s resort in the future.

Finally I must say the staff very all very helpful from reception staff to catering staff not a negative thing to say about anyone. Look forward to another short break in the future.

My husband surprised me for my 50th birthday taking me here beginning of march. He had asked for flowers, chocolates and wine for the room. This is something they do not offer. He did manage to source flowers and chocolates himself and the hotel agreed to put wine in the room. They did not put wine in the room even after my husband phone them twice prior to our stay. He had also booked an afternoon tea for us which was a lovely surprise. However the member of staff who served us was quite abrupt and had no interest in serving us. He brought a pot of tea for one you know those small teapots with one teabag and plonked our afternoon tea stand in front of us he was never to be seen again. No offer of a top up of tea, tried to get someone at the bar but they were too interested in chatting to each other rather than serve customers. The afternoon tea itself was ok, lovely sandwiches everything else a bit processed and out a packet. The scones were rock hard more like a biscuit although you did get cream it was a marmalade, apricot type jam instead of traditional strawberry jam. It was disappointing and we left nearly all of it. No point asking for a doggy bag the staff were not interested. My husband had also arranged our evening meal. We arrived for dinner only to be ignored and left standing for a good 10 minutes. The restaurant was not that busy and there was someone at the station it would have taken seconds to just look up acknowledge we were there this would have been good manners and professional. We did get taken to our table both ordered steak and chips. My steak was well I dont know how to describe it, tasted over cooked and poor quality, chips were raw just cooked on the outside. Tried to complain waste of time. Breakfast was better you could serve yourself. Overall the room was clean, nice hotel, reception staff good, bar staff, restaurant staff and food let it down. There were plenty of staff but very unorganised, attitude not good food not great. We have stayed at a lot of Macdonald hotels this is by far the worst experience. I was more disappointed for my husband who had organised all of this for my 50th birthday celebration. Beautiful setting plenty other places in aviemore to stay and eat.

Stayed in Highland hotel lots of problems and faults. Place really needs a face-lift, lick of paint, new bed linen and some nasty stains! The bed itself was comfy enough but the pillows were dreadful, even using 2 pillows as soon as you put your head on them they go flat, we both have a sore neck after 2 nights of sleeping here.
Check-In on Friday night no issues apart from the grumpy receptionist but maybe she was just having a bad day.
Room 2348. Bathroom door and windows all chipped paint. Not a good look for £200 a night very disappointing. Bathroom only had 2 hand towels - no towels for drying after a shower. So we used them that night thinking towels would be sent up as we had reported to reception who said they would get towels sent up. No towels by Saturday morning phoned reception again for towels and after waiting 40 minutes no arrival and no answer ok guest services or resort so we had to use the hand towels again. We got home from our day out and still no towels in room. We phoned again and waited nearly and hour and no towels sent up to room. My partner had to go back to reception again (which isn’t and easy feat when the hotel is like a maze) and it wasn’t the receptionist but a girl in a uniform who slammed her laptop shut when my partner tried to ask about towels to ask if anywhere we could get them as we had a dinner reservation. She said she would get towels sent up to room but it was another 25 minutes. So we could have a shower but the I went to dry my hair and the hairdryer wasn’t working, for quickness my partner even tried to swap the fuse from the iron but wouldn’t work. Reported to reception and she rudely replied ‘did you try all the buttons on the hairdryer’ which was very rude and I informed her yes and my partner tried to change fuse.
Then it gets worse. My partner went to iron his shirt and as the iron heats up water pours out of it which soaked what he was wearing. The tap in the bathroom spun round anytime you tried to turn it.
We got breakfast delivered to room both days as couldn’t get a slot in restaurant and we had to pay £5 each time for this which we shouldn’t needed to have paid really and it was cold both mornings on delivery.
On the Friday evening we had a dinner reservation in the Aspects restaurant and took them a good 5 minutes to find our reservation. The first girl couldn’t find a reservation for us but another girl helped and found reservation. Service took ages. We got our starter before our drinks and then had to wait on cutlery as no cutlery on table. The service slow and terrible staff but most of the staff were nice and pleasant though felt like any requests were ignored and not dealt with.
The one star rating is because it was nice and quiet but that’s all that was good.
We won’t be back so many faults for £398 for 2 nights actually shocking and a few other guests we spoke to felt exactly the same. You should be embarrassed Macdonald Highlands Hotel not value for money at all.

We booked this on an Itison voucher staying for 2 nights with breakfast dinner and 2 cinema tickets we upgraded our room on arrival. The rooms in this hotel are lovely but given I upgraded I was a bit disappointed to look out my window to a view of the car park . That said the room was spacious the bed very comfortable and bathroom very nice also . The hallways of this hotel let it down badly as they are in desperate need of new carpets and decor . I wouldn’t let that put you off as I said rooms are lovely the bar area also lovely and the restaurant and food for breakfast and dinner was delicious we were on a set menu but on both nights the food was fantastic . I had heartburn ( from eating chilli crisps ) in my room and when I went to the restaurant for dinner I asked the waiter if they had any peppermint at the bar which he said they didn’t I told him it was for heartburn and before I knew it he arrived at my table with a glass of hot water and mint leaves in it cured my heartburn instantly what a lovely thing to do. On the 2nd nights dinner we had same waiter and without asking he brought me another glass of hot water with mint leaves which on both nights I thoroughly enjoyed and again what a lovely thing to do on both nights. I might add my husband is disabled and there is a lift in the hotel and also a few stairs to tackle just outside the restaurant and a few more just inside however there is a disabled stair lift on both sets of stairs which we really appreciated. I have given 3 out of 5 because the hotel does in my opinion need a freshen up however the rest of our experience here was fantastic.

Recently stayed in July and quite frankly the service was poor. Since staying u have tried to contact the resort to provide feedback and have had 3 emails ignored and a Facebook message ignored.

Please find below details of things that were unfortunately not up to a standard we had expected from your establishment:;

On our first evening when arriving for dinner we were advised that children under 10 would eat for free but those 11 and over would be charged. This was not clear when booking. We were then sat down to a table looking adjacent to a dirty window.

Service within the restaurant was appalling, at breakfast time we waited an age for our order of toast and drinks to come, we had to ask various times and when they eventually came (after we had eaten our breakfast) our order was wrong.

On a previous evening we got sat at a table which had not been cleared, only being cleared once we were sitting down, having made a reservation and that fact there was clean tables We did not expect to be put at a dirty table. It again does not comply with Covid guidelines.

The childrens buffet was also poor. One evening having arrived at our 8pm serving we were advised they had ran out of chips and I was advised that the chefs had already stated they would not be preparing any more. This was unsatisfactory considering we were paying for our 11 year old to eat from the buffet. They were also providing fruit salads as part of the dessert option where the grapes were full - having read various horror stories recently regarding children choking I would expect for a children’s dessert option that these would be cut up.

The sausages and milk at breakfast also tasted off.

Within our room there was no drinking water available, and when calling guest services I was advised this was not available.

Our bedroom also had torn curtains and my house coat had a brown stain on it, which I am concerned was blood.

On check out we were advised we had an outstanding balance, this was incorrect as we had finalised all our bills at each of our meal sittings. This caused embarrassment and anxiety in front other guests.

All the observations advised above are disappointing given the price we paid!

On arrival we were greated by Micheal in reception who was fabulous giving us a warm welcome, advice and time to show us cinema at resort centre all whilst appearing to be the only member of reception staff dealing with both hotels.

From there on the stay went down hill. Our room had body fluids on bed base and single bed cover, food stuffs (formented fruit)beneath sofa bed skirting boards layered with dirt and general uncleanliness throughout. Pictures attached.

The breakfast was appalling, continually running out of food, long waits for toaster as was faulty, door to kitchen right in middle of queue for breakfast station therefore having to move around a small space continuously to let staff through fresh food with dirty plates. Long queue of 20 mins to get in for breakfast on Saturday morning. The standard of fruit/yoghurt/cereal bar was awful in comparison to other MacDonald hotels.

The barman on the Friday night and Saturday daytime at the cocktail and whiskey bar was extremely rude. I asked for a margarita and instead of apologies and alternatives his answer was "no" full stop! I searched (was not offered) a cocktail list and seemed to irritate him by picking one. On the Saturday at 3.45pm I asked if I could have the afternoon tea and was told you need to pre-order as it takes an hour to prepare (in as short a tone as before) so I asked if that would be a possibility I was willing to wait and was told no as it's now 3.45 so might take an hour and half therefore be after 5 and it finishes at 5! No alternatives offered at any point.

When my husband arrived with children to meet me there he tripped over the long piano cable stretched across middle of bar entrance floor. Instead of offering apologies two staff members talking to the barman just started laughing finding the whole thing hillarious.

On the Friday night we ate in Italian pizza restaurant where staff were helpful but small things like the tables were small for a family of four and chairs extremely cheap and uncomfortable. Both my son and husband are over 6ft tall and legs hitting off top of table and hanging off small tin chairs. The atmosphere from staff throughout resort was uncomfortable, there was no rapport or chat with hotel guests in fact we (and a few other families) felt almost burdensome which is not a standard I would expect from a hotel chain such as Macdonald. The Saturday night (5-7pm) we ate in the steakhouse where the atmosphere was fantastic, the staff were rushed of their feet covering both a busy bar (Scotland v England rugby) and restaurant however service was impeccable, staff were friendly and welcoming.

Certainly not a 4 star hotel!

I'm a bit disappointed to read your review almost six months after your stay or didn't have a chance to speak with you directly during your stay or even a few days later. I can assure that all of the issues mentioned have been resolved and I'm really sorry for them happening in the first place. Housekeeping team is working very hard to make sure that all rooms are clean, tidy and safe. We are following up very strict Macdonald Hotels Safe & Sound cleaning regime in all areas of the hotel. Breakfast is now fully served to the table, all equipment is fully working and piano is not longer in the bar area. We stayed at the aviemore highland hotel after receiving a phone call to say we had been “upgraded” to this hotel when we had booked into one of the others on site. We were so excited to receive this “upgrade” on arrival we thought the resort looked really good and we were so glad to be in the highland as it’s the only hotel out of the 3 that doesn’t look like a run down block of council flats. We when got there we were a little early but could not have a drink in the bar because it was booked out so had to hang around for 30 mins. Only a 5 o’clock seating was available for dinner both nights of our stay but we got that booked in. On the way to our room we had to hold our breath with the smell in the corridors. Every corridor has it own disgusting unique smell. Smells of smoke coming from rooms as you pass. How can they still have rooms you can smoke in !! The room was tatty and dated. Mould in the bathroom. I was honestly expecting a 4 star resort type room with robes, slippers, a really comfy bed but no this wasn’t the case. The bed is uncomfortable and everything is just worn out. I has asked the lady on reception if there was a dress code for the “a la cart” restaurant... that was stupid as a la cart it isn’t. The food is ok but basic and the restaurant is really shabby with no atmosphere at all. The breakfast has huge queues for hot food due to Covid but it still could have been managed better. The pizza restaurant in the “resort” is better than the al la cart but very noisy and busy the hotel is just very done, unwelcoming, cold and smelly: seriously needs a massive revamp and it’s not 4 star. Maybe the facilities make it 4 star but I can’t comment on this as everything was closed due to Covid. I am so glad we didn’t pay full price for this break and will never be back. I always wanted to go to their Christmas event but not now. No Scottish warm Welcome or hospitality in the Macdonald resort. Such ashame as it’s such a beautiful part of the country.

We paid £2,884.00 for a lodge for 7 days thinking this is going to be the best ever when we got there we checked in and got our keys still thinking this is going to be great in till we seen the lodge number 19 very run down number 19 then i open the door with my wife and 2 adult kids with there partners and i was shocked to to see a very run down inside too carpet dirty very old furniture the smallest tv in the living area kitchen dirty and old then the bedrooms everyone's dirty showers full of mould on tiles and silicon needing a very deep clean in fact strip out and re-new would have been better.
We had doors with very bad repairs inside and outside wardrobe doors missed and the other one jammed shut the place was a living hell we complain but nothing done and the look we got is just not good also we have book for a la carte meal for the first night so we went and to say a la carte was a joke the hall look and smelt like when i was back at school 40 years ago and food was like out off a road side cafe and cost us £270.00 so we never ate a meal or food in the hotel again we have a great time in aviemore but was sad when we had to go back to hotel we left a day and a haft early as we could not take it anymore. worst place on the planet for that kind of money is outrage-st

On arrival at 1530 we entered the hotel to fin it deserted apart for a woman at reception to be told our room wasn't ready.

On asking if we could wait in the bar area were informed that the bar was at the main hotel and we would have to walk 10 minutes to get there. This would have been to much for me as i had an ankle injury.

They apologised and relocated us tot eh main hotel and a new room on the 3 rd floor.

The room in itself was okay but very dated and dirty in the bathroom. I understand because of Covid to some extent why the room wasn't cleaned for 4 nights but it could have done with a clean in this time. The bed was dirty and uncomfortable and old. We had to ask for fresh towels which didn't come until 3 hours after i telephoned they were delivered in 10 minutes.

The breakfast was good although we had to wait at least 35 minutes for it to arrive similar to dinner which was of a good standard of cooking and presentation.

We went to Giovannis the italian restaurant one evening. Ordered the basil mozzarella cheese pizza which came without mozzarella. I ordered the spaghetti carbonara. Th pizza had no mozzarella and the carbonara had no sauce in it ......The waiter said there was mozzarella but there wasn't. He took them away and apologised, we ordered ravioli veloute and a picante pizza. They then returned with the original order......no communication in the kitchen
The new order came. My wifes ravioli was not a veloute but a rough pureed tomato sauce not what was stated on the menu or the chef didn't know what the menu was.

The lift broke and wasn't repaired for 2 days!!!

Overall a very poor experience for our family. We will not be returning to MacDonald Highland Hotel!!

Can confirm they do have a gym, but also have not used this myself so cannot comment on the equipment. Usually looks really quiet. Decent pool to do some lengths - and flume for fun! May want to check when local toddlers group use the pool to avoid this time.

"Make sure you request a dog friendly room before getting here, preferably ground floor Pool is open 8-8 and has towels, little cafe does serve poolside just tap window"
