Forss House is all about old-world charm, superb food and excellent service.

We recently spent a delightful weekend at Forss where the atmosphere is friendly, relaxed and unpretentious. Dinner was delicious each evening with a sumptuous menu, and breakfast was also a treat to wake up to!

Stephen, Lauren, Kayla and Liz looked after us wonderfully well, under the skilled management of Nicholas. Rooms are comfortable and charming, housekeeping of a very high standard and we felt reassured by the Covid safety measures which were in place throughout the hotel.

Forss has a peaceful riverside setting while indoors the style is classic and cosy with interesting features such as the impressive collection of antique wall clocks on the stairwell.

If you enjoy a traditional country house experience with wonderful food, we’d thoroughly recommend a visit to Forss House.

We booked one night here in a Superior room which didn't disappoint. Room spacious. Comfy king size bed. The Bathroom had a large copper bath which did take ages to fill but never the less, complete with his n hers sinks and White Company products. Good hairdryer a bonus. Room overlooked the garden so it wasn't noisy.
.
When entering its was like staying at someone's country house all comfy and warm and that's without the fires burning. Full of antiques and a whiskey bar to boot.

Stephen was the perfect host chatty polite and full of stories from his travels and very entertaining.

WE had booked ahead in the Restaurant and decided to go all out and have the Taster menu at £120 including accompanying wines courses.

WE had our Canapes and prosecco in the bar before we moved into the dining room
Scallops to start with a lovely Sauvignon Blanc. Celeriac Soup with Truffle oil and a glass of Chardonnay followed by Salmon. We had Apple Granita as a palate cleanser followed by Scottish beef fillet and a glass of red. The dessert was Orange Cake with Pear Sorbet with a pudding wine. Well executed and plentiful. We hauled ourselves out to the bar and had coffee and petit fours. Eventually climbed up the stairs to bed. I highly recommend this menu along with wine.

Breakfast Plenty of choice and didn't disappoint..

Service impeccable in a relaxed atmosphere . Would highly recommend a visit/stay

This hotel is worthy in being selected to feature in the Telegraph's 'Best Hotels in the Highlands' online guide. A fabulous location on the banks of the River Forss the rooms in the main house are very comfortable with stylish and spotless bathrooms. The staff are very welcoming and the stand-out feature is the food served in the evenings in their 2-rosette award wining restaurant. Local walks along the river are lovely and peaceful. Whilst not cheap this 14-room hotel does represent very good value for money.

Booked 3 weeks in advance for a 1 night half board stay in a Radclyffe Master room in the main house.

The hotel and room and bathroom was very clean, the room being particularly spacious and appeared to have been recently re-carpeted and perhaps decorated. Bathroom had a separate bath tub and shower. The bed was very large and comfy but had blankets instead of duvets a pet hate of mine but was told they are being replaced soon with new duvets.

There is an extensive whiskey collection but neither of us is a whiskey drinker so had to settle for a gin and tonic before dinner as they don't do cocktails.

Our dinner order was taken whist we were in the bar and I mentioned the fact that it said on the website that direct bookings would receive a bottle of house wine at dinner and asked if we could have a credit against a more expensive bottle instead. We were told quite curtly that that particular offer had ceased back in February implying I was lying but when I pointed out it was definitely there when we booked, there was no offer of honouring it. I forgot all all about it until checking the bill a couple of days later and saw we'd been charged full price for the wine and the offer had been duly removed from the website but it's still visible in the cache dated a week after I'd booked!

"What’s included?

All accommodation bookings made direct with Forss House Hotel (either by phone or booking through our website) include Full Scottish breakfast, early morning tea/coffee, WiFi, VAT and service. Book here on our website and you will receive a free bottle of house wine when you join us for dinner. Book online…"

The 3 course dinner was excellent, good quality ingredients and decent sized portions as was breakfast the next morning.

Don't miss a stroll to the waterfalls in the grounds, very pretty with the morning light shining on them.

Overall a nice stay but the issue with the wine and blankets soured it slightly hence the less than perfect rating.

Dear Woodpecker-47, Thank you for your honest review. Please feel assured that we value all of our guests' feedback and use this to improve our services. We are really pleased you had a comfortable stay with us and were impressed with the room offered to you. We do however apologise for the disappointment with the blankets, this is something we have now improved and duvets now come as standard with all of our rooms. We are saddened to learn you were charged for your bottle of wine, despite the offer being in place at the time stating you’d receive a free bottle of house wine when a direct booking was made. We will take on board your comments regarding the drinks menu and amend this accordingly. Nonetheless, we are thrilled to learn that you enjoyed a tasty 3 course dinner & breakfast in our restaurant. Our 2AA rosette dining is something which we are extremely proud to offer! We hope if you choose to stay in the future we will be able to offer a stay worthy of a 5 star rating! Best wishes,

We stayed for one night during our NC500 trip, room was ok but a little tired but clean enough, in comparison to similar graded hotels we have stayed in the rate paid was about £50 too high. Its location is a selling point for the trip and in a nice quiet location with a river running by. We didn't get the full benefit of the place due Covid no drinks in the lounge or bar but that's life now. The food we had was excellent, well cooked and great service from the girls. So would we stay again, if in the same area yes, but if I could drive past to another 4 star hotel, no.

We are just back from an amazing stay at the Forss House Hotel, near Thurso, well what a place, don't think twice about visiting it, just go!! Starting with a very warm, genuine welcome, the hotel and grounds very well maintained, peaceful and quiet, with the subtle sounds coming from birds and the river near by. Hotel oozes luxury, we stayed in the Morven room, its so beautiful and perfect, traditional decor continues throughout the hotel, very clean, cosy and comfortable. The views are tranquil and we felt relaxed and cared for. Food is of high standard, local produce, cooked to perfection, well done!! it takes a committed, caring team to work this well together, we thoroughly appreciated and enjoyed every moment we were there, sorry it was only for a night. Will certainly be back

We stayed in the Cottage "Hairy Mary" and not in the hotel, we had a family room and the room and bathroom was spacious and clean as you would expect. We was warmly welcomed and shown to our room, the hotel is located off the road down a private drive, you can walk to the sea from the hotel through the fields and there is also an old watermill in the grounds that you can walk around to. We ate in the Hotel Dinner and Breakfast and the Dinner was the best fayre we had in Scotland for a reasonable price, the breakfast was also great and couldn't be faulted. We would without doubt return.

When we arrived at reception we had our temperature taken which we thought was a good idea in the present circumstances. We were then told that the staff would not come into our room while we were there but if we wanted anything just ask at reception and it would be left outside our room in a bag. We were staying it the Riverside House, when we got to our room we found it very nice and very comfortable. We had dinner both nights and the food was excellent, well presented and very tasty. Nicolas and his staff made our stay a stay to remember everything was excellent from arrival to departure. We did ask about Ann and was told she had gone into semi retirement we both wish her a happy one and a long one. Could you please pass on our good wished to Ann for us.

We stayed in one of the master rooms with a huge copper bathtub in addition to a modern rain shower. The room had a view to the gardens behind the house. It was wonderful! Super comfortable bed. Included breakfast was great (I had a poached egg on poached smoked haddock. My wife had oatmeal. Both delicious.)

The hotel has short trails to view the waterfalls and old mill. There's also a 3/4 mile trail to the ocean, which we didn't complete.

Dinner, not included, was great, too.

Seems like a family staff. In fact, one family currently has 3 generations working at the Forss House. The assistant manager was informative and pleasant, too.

Really lovely old hotel set is a wonderful location. Chalets were nicely decorated and very Comfortable.
Bar staff very helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was delicious
But
Reception greeting not great. No details of the hotel given. Just handed two sets of keys for two chalets. We had booked one twin and one double and were given two doubles. No availability to change.
In-Room picnic was a disaster. Advertised as sandwiches with kettle chips., fish and chips in a box we were appalled at what was given to us. This hotel prides itself in its cuisine but that clearly doesn’t include any room service!
Sandwiches were £6-8 per sandwich And consisted of two very small finger sandwiches and no crisps included. Grossly over priced. Almost £20 fir the sandwiches in the photo! As for the fish and chips, they must have been placed immediately into the box from the frier. There was so much grease they were inedible and only the fish could be picked out of the batter. The grease disked through the box into the bag and bed linen
With such a lovely hotel and such fabulous rooms what a shame to ruin it with such poor room service.

Dear annlouise m, Thank you for this review. Please feel assured that we take on board all feedback we receive in order to improve our services here at Forss House. We are delighted to learn that you enjoyed a tasty breakfast & that our friendly team were extremely helpful during your stay. However, please let us apologise for the poor greeting you experienced upon arrival - first impressions are extremely important to us so this is disappointing to learn that this was not up to standard. With regards to the in-room picnic ‘disaster’, after carefully reviewing the issue being described, we believe a full replacement of afternoon tea sandwiches were sent to the appropriate room to rectify this problem. We can only apologise for the initial disappointment, however we hope your admiration for our hotel’s ground and rooms outweighs these disappointments and that we might see you sometime in the future for another stay. Best wishes,
