Pennyland House is located on the edge of Thurso in a quiet, but convenient location and boasts wonderful views of the Orkney Islands, Dunnet Head, Scrabster and Thurso Bay. It is a three story building dating back over two hundred years. Built in 1780 it is historically noted for being the birthplace of Sir William Alexander Smith, the founder of the Boys Brigade. Over the past few years we have sympathetically renovated this historic building and turned it into a comfortable and interesting bed and breakfast for our guests. Although not yet rated, we are confident that you will not be disappointed with the quality and service during your stay with us. We have enjoyed putting our personal stamp on Pennyland House and have tried to reflect what we believe people want in a 'home from home'.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Nine years after our first stay with Raymond and Carol, it was such a great pleasure to return. The warmth and joy with which Raymond welcomed us was absolutely top! He literally overflowed with great tips for hiking or dinner locations. He always made sure we had the best possible experience while enjoying their breakfast. Together with 2 young women he cooked and served food and beverages, which was simply fantastic! In the evening, we were given a list per room on which we could tick off all sorts of choices for a cooked Scottish breakfast, plus there was great porridge, yoghurt with fresh berries, cereals and toast. Everything was freshly prepared and tasted super delicious! The room was very clean and very large (we were on the ground floor in Turnberry for 3 nights). The bathroom was excellent and very modern with heating rag and even a bath tub! Raymond always makes sure his guests have everything they need ("More hot chocolate for your room? No problem! Some more tea cakes? Absolutely!") and their wish that guests leave as friends certainly came true. :) We had so much fun staying and chatting with you - the B&B really is your passion! Thanks a lot for a memorable stay!

What can I say about Pennylands House but wow unfortunately we only had two nights. The room we had was St Andrews apart from a lovely room & view there was the huge bathroom with the best bath( I had a luxurious bath both nights). Raymond was the perfect host breakfast lovely & tried the unusual combination of waffles, bacon & maple syrup this first morning delicious. As we only had one full day we did a lovely tour to some unusual places that Raymond had put in a folder in the room.We would stay here again next time we return up here.

Seriously nice accommodation, the rooms are huge and very comfortable. Raymond's breakfast alone is worth the stay and I could've stared out the windows in the breakfast room all day. Raymond's knowledge of the district is fantastic and exceptionally useful. I was travelling by myself and it was like being with family, but better. I will be back and will be telling everyone I know to stay there. Best accommodation ever . Thanks to everyone at Pennyland House. My only regret was I couldn't stay longer.❤️

After our stay in Orkney we stayed for two nights at Pennyland. This was an excellent decision as this is a superb B&B, well located for the Scrabster ferry terminal and Thurso. Our room, St Andrews, was large, well appointed and very comfortable. The bathroom had a separate bath and shower. Raymond was a great host and made excellent recommendations of places to visit. In addition there was a pack in our room which contained a map as well as details of places to visit nearby. The spacious car park was an added bonus. Breakfasts were excellent and as well as cooked options, we were provided with lovely fresh fruit, cereals and croissants. This is an excellent place to stay and we will definitely return if staying on the north coast of Scotland.

My mum and I stayed here for 2 nights. We checked in with Alison who gave us a really warm and friendly welcome. Alison also made us breakfast on our first morning but the highlight was meeting Jasper! We met the owner Raymond on the second morning who was equally welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for either of them and both certainly made sure we didn’t leave our table hungry at breakfast. Our rooms were a good size with really comfy beds and we didn’t need to hunt for sockets to charge our phones etc. Sockets are aplenty! If I’m ever back in Thurso I’ll definitely be staying here again.

A wonderful B&B: quiet, comfortable, roomy, great breakfast. Location is perfect: right across the road from the North Atlantic. Raymond gave us several tips on the best places to walk. Easy walk into the town and down to the river, as well as across the road and then along the cliffs, though I caution it can get pretty windy there!

Our stay was excellent. The room was amazing. The bed was so comfy. Breakfast was above and beyond what we expected. We stayed for 3 nights. We met Raymond (the host) the first morning, and his lovely sister the next 2 mornings. We would definitely recommend staying here.

Great hotel. Beautiful large room! All very well organized and clean. Absolutely great service from the owner. Good tips for day tours and great breakfast as well. Enough parking places and easy walk to town center. Not a lot to do there in the evening. Couple of Ok restaurants. Pitty there is no good pub.

Especially for the low rates (for Scotland) the room was simply amazing- huge room and bath- well equipped with outlets, lights, and tables both side of the bed. Breakfast was nothing special, but hostess was warm, the building itself ancient but updated. A very comfortable stay.
