Pennyland House is located on the edge of Thurso in a quiet, but convenient location and boasts wonderful views of the Orkney Islands, Dunnet Head, Scrabster and Thurso Bay. It is a three story building dating back over two hundred years. Built in 1780 it is historically noted for being the birthplace of Sir William Alexander Smith, the founder of the Boys Brigade. Over the past few years we have sympathetically renovated this historic building and turned it into a comfortable and interesting bed and breakfast for our guests. Although not yet rated, we are confident that you will not be disappointed with the quality and service during your stay with us. We have enjoyed putting our personal stamp on Pennyland House and have tried to reflect what we believe people want in a 'home from home'.

This is our third stay here. Rooms are immaculate and beautiful. Hosts are fabulous, can't do enough for you. Breakfast is to die for.
Wouldnt stay anywhere else in Thurso!
Rooms are fully kitted out with toiletries and an excellent tea tray with hot choc, biscuits and a cafetiere.

Especially for the low rates (for Scotland) the room was simply amazing- huge room and bath- well equipped with outlets, lights, and tables both side of the bed. Breakfast was nothing special, but hostess was warm, the building itself ancient but updated. A very comfortable stay.

+1
I had made enquiries with another guest house who were full and they recommended Pennyland House. I am so glad they did! This was the most luxurious of all the guest houses we stayed in whilst on our NC500 tour AND very reasonably priced. Alison safely welcomed us on arrival, with hand sanitisers at the front door. It’s a large house and the hallway is beautiful. Our room was on the first floor and going in, I marvelled at the size of it. Big double bed, fireplace, double aspect windows, large bathroom with separate shower. Lovely little complimentary treats too! We were asked to complete a form for breakfast the next morning.
The next morning, we went down to the big breakfast/dining room and we had a scrumptious breakfast.
Alison was a great hostess and made us feel very welcome.

As part of our Scottish roadtrip we booked 2 nights in Thurso. This gem of a B&B is the icing on the cake. Ideal location for visiting the north coast, John O'Groats etc. A really warm welcome from Raymond and our room The Carnoustie was spacious, beautifully decorated - comfortable bed with luxurious bedding. Extra touches of filter coffee, Tunnocks tea cakes added to the special feeling.
Breakfast overlooking the sea with Orkney Islands just in the distance. Service is excellent, even get a choice of how you like your scrambled eggs 🥚. As someone else said all washed down with coffee from the biggest cups in the world 🙂.
It really does deserve it's 5 star rating

We booked this place at short notice for just a one night stay. We were welcomed by Raymond on arrival who went through all the COVID policies they have and advised of local places to eat and visit. The breakfast was SUPERB! The hosts were so attentive, friendly and our stay was just all round fantastic!! :)

We stayed one night at this bed and breakfast. I’d stayed eight years before and had a very nice experience. This time, I came with my girlfriend and the experience was duplicated. Raymond is a very cordial host who provides lovely rooms that are thoughtfully provisioned and quite lovely. A full and delicious Scottish breakfast is served, or any other breakfast items desired. Wi-Fi is free and good. The property is minutes away from the ferry to the Orkney islands. My girlfriend was happy I brought her. Highly recommended bed bed and breakfast.

This is the second time I’ve stayed here on my way to Orkney (it’s literally 5 minutes drive to the Scrabster ferry terminal) and I wouldn’t stay anywhere else. Carol and Raymond are wonderful, friendly hosts and the rooms are immaculate and have everything you could possibly need. The beds are extremely comfortable with crisp cotton sheets - I had a better sleep than I do at home. Breakfast was amazing with plenty of choice and Carol couldn’t do enough for us. Will definitely stay here again.

It was with some trepidation that I booked a return visit to the excellent Pennyland House. (This time with some of the family in tow.)
After all catering for four adults and five grandchildren ,ages ranging from 13 years down to two years, would be no mean feat!
My fears were totally unfounded....our hosts honestly, went above and beyond. The kids got to feed the horses, play with Jasper their cute little puppy and allowed to play footy in their large back garden. They were really relaxed about having the children and it just made our stay special.Thank you.
Standards as high as ever! Rooms lovely.Breakfast delicious.Once you stay here, you will return again and again.(We Do!)

An absolute gem of a B&B. Very comfortable, spotlessly clean and well appointed bedrooms and facilities. (even ground coffee and a cafétiere for our use in the room)
Nothing at all to fault Pennyland House.
Allison and Keira made our breakfast experience really delightful with tasty and plentiful fare, and also knowledgeable hints on where to visit on our onward journey ....
The Continental Breakfast I had was delicious, fresh and varied with a selection of charcuterie, cheeses and Fresh Tomatoes ....nothing was too much trouble. My husband had the Full Scottish which he thoroughly enjoyed and the toast , Croissants, Pain au Chocolat and Cereals/nuts were available (if you had the room ! )
It's a B&B which I would definitely be comfortable in recommending to friends and family, and in fact I already have.

Room Tip:Â We had Brora which was a large double room on the second floor and had great views over the sea.

My mum and I stayed here for 2 nights. We checked in with Alison who gave us a really warm and friendly welcome. Alison also made us breakfast on our first morning but the highlight was meeting Jasper! We met the owner Raymond on the second morning who was equally welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for either of them and both certainly made sure we didn’t leave our table hungry at breakfast. Our rooms were a good size with really comfy beds and we didn’t need to hunt for sockets to charge our phones etc. Sockets are aplenty! If I’m ever back in Thurso I’ll definitely be staying here again.
