Formerly The Castle Arms, Our Hotel was originally a 19th. century coaching inn which has been updated and extended over the years. We have recently taken over The Mey Hotel and are in the process of renovating both the interior and exterior of the hotel whilst adding our own Scottish themes to the various rooms whilst maintaining the unique history of the building, Mey and the wider local area. Located on the famous NC500, only a stones throw away from the Queen Mothers highland residence the Castle of Mey, 7 miles from John O'Groats we are on the very North Coast of Scotland near to Dunnet Head with extensive views over the Pentland Firth to the Orkney Isles and beyond. Ideally positioned for access to 3 of the Orkney Ferry services currently operating. Offering good quality home cooked food alongside local beers and spirits all within comfortable surroundings. A 'Home from Home' whilst you pass through this lovely area of Scotland.

From the warm welcome and already warm room everything else was perfect. A well cooked evening meal and comfortable bedroom and ensuite shower we followed up with an excellent cooked breakfast
A perfect place to stay and explore the neighbourhood. Strongly recommend.

So pleased that we booked in advance to do a stopover here and rather wish that we had made it 2 nights. From arrival to leaving we were made to feel like friends rather than guests and we immediately felt at home. Emma and Euan are a really lovely and very interesting couple who had only taken over the hotel a month before. It was fascinating to learn of their journey to owning the hotel, their plans for the future and the difficulties they still have to overcome - not least, at the time of our visit, Euan's struggle to get a faster internet service for running a business.. They had already made some great changes to the hotel - the bar area has been refurbished in a highland cow and Scottish thistle theme and everything just works to give it an updated, tasteful but traditional look. If you are visiting, also spot the very clever 'Fifty Shades of Scotland 'painting in the lounge area. The bedrooms are laid out round a courtyard away from the restaurant and bar area and our room (No 7) was simply. but effectively decorated and had an efficient, easy to work shower!
Our evening meal was a culinary delight and Euan's cooking is definitely home cooking, with a twist, at its best - presentation and finesse, without fuss. we were treated to lamb shank, the best vege nut roast ever, apple crumble and Brownie to die for. Breakfast was also superb.
We cannot recommend the Castle Arms Hotel enough and wish Emma and Euan the very best for the future of their business.

From the minute we walked into The Mey Hotel we felt welcome and comfortable. Euan & Emma were so accommodating and although already busy with other guests they were able to fit us in for dinner and my husband is still talking about the homemade chicken, chorizo and black pudding pie! The lounge area is excellent for relaxing after a long drive and the rooms so cosy and comfortable for a good nights rest. We couldn't fault anything with our stay and it really lived up to what we expected from our wee Scottish road trip!

Arrived later than booked but we were still able to have a meal which was very good. Also the apple betty pudding was great. The interior was very comfortable and clean and listening to comments from other diners was very positive.
Thanks to the new owners for helping us out with our stop over problem.
All staff were friendly and there was a comprehensive selection of local beers and spirits.

Was staying elsewhere, but this establishment was recommended, and strongly advised to book, even though I was a solo diner. On contacting the hotel, was told fully booked in restaurant….it was a Saturday night, but was fitted in. What surprised me was that by time I left, at nearly 8.00pm, it had only served 6 customers…….

The welcome was very warm and friendly. On being presented with the menu, was informed there were 2 extra chicken dishes made that evening. One was spicy so did not take that. I could not understand why my hot main course was put on the table, before I was asked into the restaurant , making cold vegetables.
The dish I received had a sauce very heavily laden with mustard - apparently this is how the lady of the house likes it. I had to try and take the 7 little pieces of chicken out of the sauce…..I was not sure what happened to the ham and leeks, as told at time of ordering. I actually asked if the spicy alternative had been put into the pie by mistake !!

The disappointing main course was ALL that I had to eat, and was more than a little surprised at the price of the “ mustard pie” being £16.95. Admittedly, I had not asked the price when ordering.., but I had made the point that I had not enjoyed it,

With 2 drinks, my total bill was over £26.00. My worry is that, in the winter season, local bars and restaurants depend very heavily on local trade, and these prices are not going to appeal to the local community.

The couple have only been here since April, so possibly have not considered what will happen in the shoulder months between November and March.
I wish them well for the future as they are a charming couple.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. With our staffing levels we will generally not cater for more than 5 tables in an evening. Our hotel residents always take priority for dinner bookings and then we accommodate other diners where possible of which you were one. All of our food is cooked fresh to order. We want to offer excellent customer service and will not take additional customers that compromises the service we offer. On that particular evening we did indeed cater for intended numbers so I can only assume your sitting poison in the lounge area obscured your view in some way Our guests are initially invited to sit in the lounge bar to place food and drink orders, you were invited over to your restaurant table as soon as your hot food came out of the kitchen, from memory you were enjoying a conversation with some other guests and took quite a while to finish your conversation before heading over to the table You did not mention at the time you thought the vegetables were cold we would have been very happy to provide new ones for you. You ordered a main dish that was advertised as being cooked in a mustard sauce. You did express a concern that you thought it was a bit too spicy for your tastes and our chef immediately offered to remake a milder version of the dish but you turned the offer down. We did monitor the feedback from our other guests regarding that specific special on that evening, as a result of your comments, and the feedback was all very positive as to the quality and taste of the chicken pie. The same evening two guests who both ordered the same dish as yourself posted this review - "Beautiful furnishings, comfy and cosy atmosphere, and delicious home cooked food. Wow!" We understand that everybody's tastes differ, hence the offer to remake the dish for you. It therefore a little disappointing, despite you stating you were 'in the industry !', that you have felt the need to publicly air your disappointment when offers to remedy the situation at the time were refused. Finally, Thank you for your concern as to how we will operate the business in the colder months, we have got a comprehensive business plan in place to manage this.

A big thank you to Euan and Emma. After me and 2 biker friends were travelling around the NC500 it was getting late and we had nowhere to camp for the night. They couldn’t have been more accommodating letting us pitch for the night and even offering us some hot food although the restaurant had closed for the night . We can’t thank you enough and will always remember your kindness and generosity…..cheers

Staying at the Castle of Mey , we were tourists and newcomers to the area so very reliant on Trip Advisor reviews to find somewhere for an evening meal .. The Castle staff here spoke highly of their neighbours at the Castle Arms , and being local , they know the best spots .. so we took their advice .
The owners, Emma and Ewan , are the new custodians of this famous old coaching house on the doorstep of the Royal Castle of Mey and are making a superb job of putting the area on the culinary map with their simple , locally sourced menu ..
The Caithness Mey steak pie was quite literally an amazing dish .. (long slow cooked beef , locally brewed stout ale and a lot of patience and love are the vitally ingredients ) which my wife loved and I had the chicken & chorizo pie also superb .... alongside a great choice of starter dishes and homemade deserts this was a superb , home cooked style meal ..
There is no doubt this place will get busier and busier as word gets round .. the best restaurants worldwide are developed through word of mouth .. and these guys are at the beginning of that trajectory .. go now , while it’s still possible to get a table and afford to buy that Caithness Mey pie !

Whilst doing a road trip along the North Coast 500 and elsewhere, we came across this charming little hotel
The owners seem to have taken it on over the last year.
Bedrooms and bathrooms were spotless
I really liked the way they seem to offer food of the season. We had venison stew and broccoli
Delicious. Followed by a delightfully flavoured key lime pie. Yummy

Great night sky
Went out at 10pm hoping to see the Northern lights… and instead saw a perfect image of the Milky Way overhead .
Lovely and quiet spot with a great selection of whiskies.
Enjoy

Situated close to the Queen mothers former summer residence of Mey castle. Attentive owners. Wifi ok in restaurant area. Clean but a little cool and misty rooms in annex behind inn. Very good kitchen and the man in the house acting chef get full honours both for breakfast and evening dinner meals.

Well what can I say about The Mey Hotel apart from fantastic. It’s like being part of a family when stopping at the hotel and the hosts Euan and Emma are just what you want to see after a long drive. They were extremely welcoming and helpful and made you feel comfortable from start to finish. Not only were the hosts great but the food was also of the same calibre and so was the array of gins available in bar. The hotel is a work in progress but considering Emma and Euan haven’t been in charge for that long they’ve done a great job updating the hotel whilst keeping with the tradition of the hotel. Will definitely be back and looking forward to a hot chocolate from their new coffee shop which is opening soon.
