Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We stayed 2 nights in order to spend a day on Orkney. The rooms were spacious and up to date with excellent attention to detail. There is a nice lounge with panoramic views of the beach. Breakfast was excellent with lots of nice touches like homemade jams and marmalade. Also Karen told us where to see puffins - the highlight of our trip.

My wife was born in Thurso many years ago and she wanted to visit the town and show me around her old school locations and houses, plus some of the restaurants that she can remember visiting with her parents. The Marine didn’t exist 40 odd years ago, but it was a fantastic location to stay in and enjoy the northern Scottish coastline. Karen is an excellent hostess, and her establishment is definitely worth visiting. Karen’s full Scottish breakfast is fantastic, just what you need at the start of the day. The view from the sitting area off the dining room is ideally located to see the setting sun reflect off Hoy, as well as see the sun dipping below the skyline over Scrabster (at 10.35pm). We both enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to recommend The Marine to anyone looking for a comfortable and quiet stay in the north of Scotland.

Stayed 2 days in room 1 which was comfortable & very clean , The view from the conservatory is amazing & location wise was ideal. The breakfast both days was just right to get us started for the day.Thurso itself doesn’t have much to offer but is a good base to explore.

Glad you enjoyed your stay. If you had joined one of Thurso's walking tours, run by Above & Beyond, they may have changed your opinion of our little town. However Caithness is packed with places, wildlife and archaeology so lots to keep you busy 😊

The Marine is a wonderful stay in Thurso. The innkeeper is friendly and accommodating, and the rooms were very clean and well designed. We arrived a bit later than planned and she was checking up on us through our booking agent to ensure we were okay. Our bathroom was quite spacious and modern, and the hot shower was amazing. Breakfast to order was just what was needed to start the day. Pay attention to your GPS and the pics on Google Maps to ensure that you don’t drive by it. It’s tucked in a side street with a small sign. The views of the water from the sitting room (off the dining room) can’t be beat. Just incredible. Highly recommend.

Karen and Richie made us feel very welcome during our 4 night stay. Breakfasts were excellent with locally sourced quality products. Little touches like home made shortbreads added to the general feeling of making our stay enjoyable, We had room 1 with sea views but guests in the other rooms had access to the balcony room looking across the Bay. I would recommend it as base to explore northern Scotland including taking the day tour to the Orkney's from John O Groats.

Was not disappointed with The Marine. We stayed two nights and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Thurso. The room is spotlessly clean and has everything you need and more. Not one but two windows with views! The Bed was fabulous, super big and comfy. Karen is lovely and super friendly, her breakfast are great too. I'm sure we will venture up again but will definitely recommend The Marine to our Friends ☺️ Thank you
