In 20 acres of beautiful landscaped gardens and woodland, on the shores of the Beauly Firth near Inverness, this 17th-century Scottish mansion is now a luxurious 4-star country house hotel. Free parking is available at this hotel, and there are Tesla and non-Tesla electric car charging points on-site. Rich in historic character and traditional charm, parts of the Bunchrew House Hotel date back to 1505. With dark-wood panelling and real log fireplaces at both ends of the room, the Drawing Room is a warm cosy place to relax. Each en suite room is individually decorated with its own unique character and the rooms are named after local places and Scottish clans associated with the house. All rooms have TVs and fridges, with fresh milk supplied daily. With fabulous views over the Beauly Firth to the mountains beyond, the wood-panelled restaurant has received 2 AA Rosettes for the quality of its cuisine. The Cocktail Bar looks out onto the hotel’s magnificent gardens and offers a range of drinks, including fine malt whiskies.

We have stayed at Bunchrew three times, all in November over my birthday. I won’t tell you which ones! Each stay has been better than the previous one, as the interiors have been gradually upgraded and the public areas are now quite respectable. The strong point about this establishment is the quality of the food. Simply stated: it is exceptional! The staff are also all top-notch, being both pleasant and attentive in equal order. Do take the Winter Luxury Break for two or three nights, which includes a four-course dinner on each night, without limitations, an afternoon tea and a bottle of Prosecco in the room. Full breakfast is also naturally included! Beware if there is an high, high tide, as this sometimes causes the driveway to flood slightly. This does not render it impassable but adds to the charm of the place. Being only a few miles from the city of Inverness, Bunchrew makes for an ideal location to stay if visiting the Eden Court Theatre. Now that the theatre has short-sightedly closed its restaurant and replaced it with a burger van (I kid you not), take advantage of Bunchrew’s afternoon tea prior to curtain-up. It is said that the ghost of Isabell Ogilvy of Powrie occasionally stalks the corridors at night, however, she is extremely benign and will do you no harm as long as you remember to settle your account before leaving! Her portrait hangs just inside the front door.

Review is for afternoon tea only. Fabulous setting, pity about the fare! Most of the cakes were 'shop bought' if not they tasted like that and certainly not M&S standard. We were not offered choice of 'tea' that we'd like to drink. Disappointing experience.

Bunchrew house hotel is located just a few minutes outside of Inverness. We paid ten punds to go there from the city centrum with a cab. The location on the seaside is amazing and the building which the oldest part Are from 1505 is stunning. It is just like living in the tv serie The Crown. The people working there Are all extremely service minded and make you feel like a family member comming home. You can choose both fine dining or a meal in the bar. We did choose the bar and the portion was huge, it tasted good and at a good price. After that we relaxed by the fire place in the drawing room with a good whisky. The rooms Are comfy, and mine had a beautiful seaview. Of course the house is old, but thats an important part of the experience. The house of course has a ghost, but she did not have time to visit us this time! We ended the stay with a Scottish breakfast in the beautiful restaurant. This is the first time I have been feeling sad to leave a hotel. I wish I can come back as soon as possible.

Staff was friendly, location was private, pace and vibe was perfect. Every interaction we had at this hotel was great. My wife and I were looking forward to so many locations in Scotland over 2 weeks and this gem turned out to be the highlight of our trip. Dinner was the best we had out of all of many of the top restaurants in Scotland, was a huge surprise. The chef perfected every single dish.

My daughter and son-in-law got married at Bunchrew House Hotel on 28th October 2023, and my daughters and I spent 3 nights at the hotel. It's a fabulous place for a wedding! The rooms are very comfortable, food is delicious and beautifully served, and the setting is just gorgeous! Anne and her hardworking team, coordinating the wedding, were absolutely brilliant! Nothing was too much trouble. They exuded calm whilst working like a well oiled machine and made the whole experience stress-free, I can't thank them enough 😁. We all had a fabulous time and took away fantastic memories of the wedding, and the hotel and it's staff.

Beautiful property on the loch! Our room was comfortable and breakfast was great! The highlight of our stay was the afternoon tea experience! While I know this is an old castle, I felt the rooms could have been more updated. The furniture was very worn out, as was the carpet, and tv barely had any working channels. The staff were very nice but at times did seem a bit busy and short staffed.

Last week we celebrated my son and now daughter-in-law's wedding at Bunchrew House. It was a wonderful and magical experience from beginning to end and Bunchrew played its part in making it so special. As we were travelling from Northern Ireland we arrived on the Thursday and left on the Monday. From the minute we arrived as the father and mother of the groom we were made to feel special and this continued throughout the whole weekend for each guest that arrived. The staff were excellent. The hotel is full of old world charm and it felt like you were spending the weekend in a country retreat. The rooms had charm and were very clean. Breakfast each morning was excellent, we experienced the guest breakfast menu on the first morning and last morning, and the wedding party breakfast on the other days. On the Friday evening we had a Buffet dinner for the groom's party and guests who had arrived the night before the wedding food was of a good temperature for this type of event and the hotel were able to hold the meal for half an hour to accommodate the late arrival of the Belfast to Inverness flight on the Friday. The quality of this pre wedding event was fantastic. On the day of the wedding everything went smoothly beginning with breakfast, preparing for the groom's party to depart fo the church and the warn welcome back with drinks and canopies on the lawn The wedding meal and evening finger food were of an excellent quality matched by the high standard of service in serving the meal and the manner in which the staff took us through the day. All the quests commentary positively on their experience. Would highly recommend and would definitely have Bunchrew on my list for any return family visits to Inverness to celebrate something special.

We visited the property many years ago and were looking forward to returning with our family who was visiting Scotland for the first time. What a disappointing experience on so many fronts except for the dinners which were very good. Where to begin……we arrived on a Sunday afternoon and they were cleaning up from a wedding weekend. We were greeted by a lovely person we thought was the manager but we never saw again after those first few minutes. Our rooms were on the top floor and there is NO lift and NO bellhops to take our luggage and golf bags to the room….which were packed for a 14 day trip and heavy. It was an exhausting trek up without heavy bags! One of the staff agreed to bring one bag to the room and made a face at a 10£ tip. During our 4 day stay we only saw 5 staff who seemed to be working everywhere - restaurant, check-in, cleaning, the bar, etc. and they all seemed to be following a set of rules that were not customer centric. There was absolutely no flexibility on the menu. My husband wanted to have a salad before the main course and he was told that he could only have a salad if he ate in the bar. We asked for bread and were told that the bread could not be brought to the table until we finished our amuse bouche. I ate one and then the server asked me if I was going to eat the 2nd one and stood at the table until I finished it. The chef doesn’t arrive for breakfast service until 730am. There is only one type of pastry available each day - plain croissants. For breakfast you could only have the exact combinations on the menu. You could not switch out ham for salmon or poached eggs for scrambled eggs. We were 4 and wanted to have a stack of pancakes to share - that couldn’t happen because we already ordered the 4 courses for the 4 people and that meant we’d be getting an extra order. Offering to pay for the pancakes also seemed not to be an option. But….there were two situations that were inexcusable. We arrived for breakfast and headed to a clean table. We were told we couldn’t sit at that table because it was not our table and were then taken to “our” table which hadn’t been cleaned from the prior guests. As they were cleaning the table we were asked if we wanted to keep the toast from the prior guests. We were so surprised they then told us we could sit at the clean table!! But the piece de resistance was sitting in the bar and watching one of the wait staff come into the bar with a wine glass, take out a funnel and then pour it back into the open bottle. Needless to say we didn’t order glasses of wine again! The property is in desperate need of a major refurbishment. The dining room had an odd smell akin to a cat litter box, the carpeting is beyond a good cleaning and repair, the woodwork is beat-up and the fireplaces looked as though they hadn’t been fired up in years. Flushing the toilet was an exercise in futility most times and if someone in the room next to you was taking a shower also expect the water pressure to flow to a trickle of cold water. It saddens me to write this review as the property has so much potential but is in desperate need of a healthy investment. Until then, it would be most helpful if the hotel were better staffed and trained to be more accommodating to its guests.

Response from Norbert Szabó, General Manager at Bunchrew House Hotel
Responded 5 Oct 2023
Dear caedmund, I have attempted to get in touch to discuss your obvious disappointment as some of the comments made just weren't something I could make sense of, for all that, I had no response. I tend to start replies by thanking the reviewer for the time spent writing about their experience. The team also view the posts on this page and believe them to be valuable information, even in the case of negative feedback. We can always learn and improve. However, a review in our view should focus on facts and experiences that are true. Let me respond to your claims point by point. You arrived on a Sunday after a wedding and were greeted by our lovely receptionist Eniko who you thought was the manager. We can confirm the above. If you are making reference here by asking where was the above-mentioned receptionist afterwards, and the manager, well, on annual leave. In my absence, there is a team of people who would love to discuss and help with any query or complaint you might have. Bunchrew House is a historical building that was converted into a hotel in 1986. It is also classed as a country house hotel. There are three levels with three out of the sixteen bedrooms located on the third level (second floor). No building built in the same era of similar size will feature an elevator or a 'bellhop' for that matter. For this reason we always, without exception, offer to help with the luggage. It is not a matter of bargaining with staff and certainly never a case where a tip would be expected. By checking the staff rota, I can see that you would have met at least 10 of our 20+ employees during your stay. Furthermore, I have full confidence in every member of our current team that they will deliver the best customer experience that the hospitality industry has to offer. You started off by mentioning that the dinner was 'very good', in spite of this, you go into detail on how it wasn't. Switching/combining dishes from two separate menus has been and will remain a decision under our discretion for numerous reasons. The Chef is on site from 7am and all guests are informed about breakfast times at check in. If an earlier time was required this should have been discussed the day before. The made to order cooked breakfast option is the popular choice and this will mean that the usual 'continental' options are limited, even so, on top of the cooked to order option. Menus are made for a number of reasons, food service would be an impossible task if everyone choose to go off menu. The 'inexcusable' mishap involving the tables at breakfast was to do with the fact that tables are set in a way so we can best accommodate all residents in a timely fashion. Your 'party of 4' was not together at the first instance therefore it was assumed that a table for two was needed. This changed after a couple of minutes so you were shown to a different table. One staff member clearing the table has mistaken your then party of 2 with the previous guest that set there thinking that the toast was not finished and we do ask before any food is taken away. As the number of people in your party eating together at breakfast varied over the days during your stay this could have been avoided by pointing out that 2 more residents are to join you at a table set for 4. Funnels, cat-litter box, beat-up wood work, unused fire places. Seems that you had quite an unusual experience that other guests haven't encountered. For this, I wanted to discuss your stay and clarify a few points. Any issue you have experienced such as the toilet flush would have been quickly solved if you had mentioned this during your stay or at least at check out. As we only learn from your disappointments after you have left it feels unfair to mention some of these points and leaves one to think that the statement that 'it saddens' you to write this is not used as intended and it is quite the opposite that is true.

The hotel is gorgeous - a manor house converted into a hotel. No lifts, unfortunately, and we were up in the turret room! But we managed just fine. The food is top notch - all of it ... we had afternoon tea, breakfast and dinner there. Conveniently located for exploring the Loch Ness area, including the Culloden battlefield.

The hotel has an excellent view of the loch. Our room was lovely and large - we loved the big window seat. And the food was the best food we had during our trip. The chefs create fare more akin to a Michelin-starred restaurant in London than a highlands hotel!
