The Royal Highland Hotel is the oldest hotel in the centre of the Highland capital, Inverness. In 2000, the property was carefully restored, retaining its unique character associated with the bygone age. As soon as you enter the hotel you will appreciate this. In the foyer the grand staircase, the inspiration for the Titanic's staircase, leads to the 84 spacious refurbished bedrooms - all with very high ceilings. The decor is rich with traditional furniture and deep colours. The rooms all have soft furnishings and antique style furniture. The excellent bathrooms are generally medium to large in size. For over 151 years, the hotel has been looking after travellers from all over the world. Perhaps its popularity stems from the fact the hotel is a grand place to stay. Large bedrooms, large lounge areas, quiet meeting rooms, good food, prime location and friendly staff all play their part. All local amenities close to hand, but within a 5 minute drive you are out into the dramatic Highlands. Lochness is only 7 miles from the hotel.

The views of other reviewers are on the mark, it's very evident on entry the past grandeur of this hotel, take a look at magnificent staircase an decorative finshes, vaulted ceiling skylight roof and at first glance you'd be blown away. But don't look too closely as wear and tear is also on display throughout. Mind you, you are not paying for a 5 star hotel either so realistic expectations are in order. The room was small and so was the bed proportionally. Reasonably clean and tidy but bathroom whilst functional- just, was awkward and dated, sink taps not well designed for use. Service again was generally fine but disappointing level of experience when ordering an Old Fashioned drink and being served nothing that was close to resembling that drink. To be fair the barman did advise the drink would be served in a martini glass and not a tradition tumbler, not sure why and happy to go with that but the drink itself was nothing like any I've tried before. I think the barman was possibly out of his depth or was a bigt inexperienced. The included continental break was reasonable but could easily have been very good, old fashioned toasters instead of a more usable conveyor toaster, the lille danish pastry i tried was terrible so guessing the other danish and not fresh croissants would be equally poor, coffee type also not a hit. The hotel could take a look at some of the french or german breakfast offerings which usually includes a few sliced cheese and cold meats/salamis etc options. Overall the breakfast was fine with a couple of slices of toast, cereal and some tea and you are not paying a fortune for it. The hot breakfast option is an additional 5 pounds didn't see the point but again not expensive and unable to offer any view. I would not be returning to Royal Highland and would look at other options and pay a little more as felt the standard was a bit below what I'd prefer. Just caution readers to look at the reviews and not to have to many expectations and look at pricing if they wish to book. I would like to see this hotel undergo a refurbishment to return it to past standards but understand may not be possible or needed as the hotel was very busy. We were fortunate to grab one of the few car spaces outside the hotel which was appreciated.

My wife and I were somewhat apprehensive about staying here in view of the many negative reviews. But we were pleasantly surprised. Our room was fine, with excellent Wi-fi and a large TV. There was a bath and very little noise from other rooms. It is a while since we flushed a toilet with a chain! The staff at reception and also the cleaning staff were very pleasant and helpful. Having read the reviews, we stayed out of the bar and restaurant. But we did have a continental breakfast which was disappointing. To say it was basic is a euphemism. It would be so much better with some fruit to go with the cereals and some other bread than cheap sliced. It is certainly not worth £9.50. The poor breakfast stops me giving the hotel top marks. The position next to the railway station is great for travellers by train and it is very much in the centre of the city. But all in all, we were content with our stay.

Location wise this hotel has it all, right next to the Inverness train station and surrounded by different car parks. A very traditional setting and very well preserved, but the rooms unfortunately remained on the 1940s, could really use an upgrade in order to attend more modern customers

We recently stayed for two nights and this grand hotel was exceptionally peaceful. We had a lovely large room with comfortable beds. The room where the breakfast was served needed a revamp but the staircase was amazing.

This fine old hotel sits right next to the station. It is still nice but like everything with age it is faded. Having said that we were so glad to have booked our stay at the Royal Highland. The young lady on reception could not have been more friendly and accommodating to us. We were allowed access to our room earlier than expected for which we were most grateful, if only to drop off our luggage. The grand staircase looked resplendent with it's lovely tartan carpet and lined with an assortment of artwork. Our bedroom was huge, inviting & very comfortable. It had everything we required for our stay plus some. Having just spent a couple of nights at a well known chain hotel it was a delight to sample to traditional Scottish hospitality. We noticed many guests relaxing with afternoon tea in the foyer and there was a bar & restaurant which we did not use. The hotel was nice and warm and a comfortable base to return to after a long day sightseeing. There were lots of places to sit and relax in the reception area. The breakfast room was a let down. It certainly had the potential to look much more inviting. From the layout of the tables it looked as though large groups had departed early. Our cooked breakfast was nice but the room was a let down, 50's music being piped out loudly was really not nice or appropriate at breakfast. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would not hesitate to return when next in Inverness.

Hotel was very tired, and staff not particularly welcoming or helpful. First contact was to be told to use multi story car park despite advertising free parking (only for about 5 cars)! No offer to recompense us the parking charges. Rooms inexpensive and seemed clean but wallpaper peeling, curtains ripped, cracked window pane, no shower mat despite sign saying use one as surface slippery. No drinking water supplied. Food very expensive and one meal hardly eaten. No enquiry/concern as to why - it was horrible. We didn't bother with very expensive breakfasts offered. Very disappointed.

After reading reviews I was quite concerned about staying here, it was a surprise birthday trip for my hubby and I felt that booking this hotel could be the start of a bad holiday. On the contrary, perfect location after travelling from London on the Caledonian sleeper. Check-in was easy, the ‘older’ lady was kinda welcoming hah. Our room wasn’t ready but we knew that would be the case so we left our luggage in the luggage storage room and went out to explore. On return our room was lovely, cosy and clean, an iron provided yayyy and ironing board. Tea, coffee etc. comfy beds and nice shower. Breakfast was continental, the duty manager was welcoming and accommodating. Food was fresh and plentiful. Overall, yes the hotel is a little dated but it fits in perfectly with the aged ambiance of Inverness itself, so if it was too modern I don’t feel you would experience the true Scottish cultural experience. I would definitely stay here again as a base to explore the Highlands.
