The Alexandra Hotel offers a friendly staff and a lively bar atmosphere that many guests appreciate, though the value has been questioned due to the room quality not matching the price point. While rooms are generally found to be clean, travelers have pointed out maintenance issues and dated decor. The amenities receive mixed reviews, with praise for aspects like powerful showers but criticism for breakfast service and further maintenance needs. Despite these drawbacks, the hotel maintains a pleasant overall vibe.

I came here for a week to relax, walk, get around via trains, coach, and boats, and the Alexandra Hotel is a perfect base to do that from. It is close to the train and bus station and you can always get a taxi (outsideTescos) to the start of Glen Nevis/Ben Nevis walks, to save the 35min boring road walk to get to the starting points. Note – this is an old hotel, so don't expect state of the art London and/or New York interiors. Having said that the rooms are spacious, with good carpet that is nice to do your morning yoga or moves on and the chair and table by the window suit a cup of tea and some journal wiring while enjoying the view. The bed was very, very comfortable and the bathrooms are very clean with lovely grey tiling and a rain head shower with a strong water jet – just what you need after a long days walking. Yes, the corridor carpets are patchy, but you won't be sleeping on those, so don't worry about it! You will already know that hotel coffee is never any good, or strong enough, so be smart and visit the cafes in town and support their businesses. Likewise, dinner, although hot soup and bread, etc, brought to my room was great when i did not have the energy to go out again. Staff are terrific; friendly, helpful, kind – bonuses for everyone please, including waiters! Good hygiene was in practiced during my stay and it felt safe to be here. I would certainly stay here again and would recommend this hotel for solo female travellers who would like to stay somewhere central, close to town, but also close to walks and transport.

We stayed at this hotel on a coach tour with Strathmore travel. The driver was excellent very informative and helpful.
On arriving we were given our keys to our room this was on the fourth floor I had asked for an adapted room. The girl explained there would be one available the next day and they would help us move our luggage.
The room was clean well laid out with a walk in shower .
The meals were on a set time 6:30pm for us, the dinning room was huge and very busy the staff looked rushed of there feet trying to serve everyone.
Breakfast was set at 8:15 and again very busy this was a buffet style breakfast this was good with a nice choice.
Overall the dinners weren't to my liking as I felt the choice was limited for me then I'm a really fussy and everyone else seemed to like it.
The hotel is old creaky and worn in places but it adds character.
The staff were were friendly and very helpful as it can't be easy looking after so many people .
Hand gels were available all over the hotel and I saw staff using these regularly and all wore face masks.

I spent 2 nights at this hotel with my family and the building itself and the communal lounge areas are lovely. The room was extremely comfortable and the window opened easily for ventilation during the night. The beds were soft and comfortable and the bathroom had a large mirror and good shower pressure.

The reason I have given 4 stars is because the week before I arrived, I emailed and booked dinner for the second night, and I also reminded the reception the day of the booking. However, when my family and I showed up, we were not on the list. This also happened the next day at breakfast, and the waitress was quite rude about it.

Other than this, this I was really pleased with the hotel as most of the staff were lovely, the room was comfortable, and the location was perfect.

Oh dear. Lock down has not been kind to this hotel. Let’s start with the staff who were very nice and helpful. Then things go WAY downhill very quickly.

Stairs with carpets that had holes in them. The room was dated and to be honest not clean. We had ordered a room with a 4 poster bed, which was 2 single beds pushed together and a 4 poster gazebo type things built around the 2 singles beds! NOT A FOUR POSTER BED does that make! The floor in our room sloped from the front of the building to the back to such an extent it made you feel like you were on a ship that was about to capsize or you had a few to many drinks!

We ordered dinner for the first night, of our 2 night stay. Well to be honest we have had a better meal in a greasy spoon. We ordered the mushroom soup which was passable but tasteless, then we had one main of mac and cheese, which looked and tasted like it had come out of can then another main of haddock and chips with peas. The peas were microwaved to death, the chips ok, however the fish in batter was over cooked and looked like it had come from a supermarket frozen section.

Breakfast was ok, although various items ordered didn’t appear on the plate. For example on morning one we had no black pudding, which did make an appearance on the second day however it was only one piece which was then split in two and half put on each plate!

As I said lockdown may well have had a really bad affect on this place but we paid over £300 for 2 nights bed and breakfast (dinner was extra) and left feeling ripped off and needing a shower!

Finally on our second morning, we had the joy of the council mowing the grass outside the hotel at 7:00am which went on until 9:30am.

Only reason we gave this place one star was because of the location, right in the town centre but not much advantage when every shop/bar and restaurant was closed.

Stayed here early January for 2 nights the stay was really pleased with the hotel overall just a few small changes could be made, Upon arrival at the hotel we found the small tight car park in the back which we managed to find a space in later on in the evening when went to collect something from the car we found cars were abandoned everywhere so I would highly recomend getting their early if you need a car space. On check in the staff were very friendly and informative, upon making our way to the room we noticed the hotel could be doing with some touch ups as paint was peeling and carpets were badly worn in areas, the room how ever was really nicely decorated and spacious with plenty of storage space, also a handy information guide giving you all the info you may require, the only downside was in the bathroom it was far too warm as the towel rail is on constantly with now way of turning it off and there was no window to open which made it quite uncomfortable showering. The breakfast that was included in the price was fantastic with lots of various choices from cereals and porridge to a full cooked breakfast you could have as much as you wanted as it was self service the quality of the food on offer was great, on the breakfast menu all items have a key to show what allergy friendly options are which was great as my girlfriend requires a gluten free diet. Upon finding the allergy information was also available in the bistro we booked a table and I must say I'm glad we did as the very fast and friendly service was great, the portions and quality of food was fantastic would highly recommend staying and eating here.

I cannot express how much people should avoid this hotel. We booked for one night as we were doing the Jacobite Express but as soon as we walked in we realised what a mistake we had made. The hotel decor is badly needing an update and the reception staff are rude and barely even look at you as they demand payment. When we got to our room we wanted to leave immediately as it had peeling wallpaper, dirty net curtains, badly stained bedding and worst of all dampness and mould on the wall at the beds and near the window. The bathroom tiles were not just cracked but broken and sharp and the shower curtain and window curtains both had patches of mould. It was the most disgusting room I have ever stepped foot in. I immediately started calling every other hotel or B&B in the area but sadly no vacancies anywhere so we were stuck. We had arranged a table for dinner in the attached restaurant but given the poor hygiene in the bedrooms there was no way I was letting my family eat there so we cancelled. I asked for an iron to be brought up and the ironing board had a cover that was hanging off and filthy to such an extent that it was unusable. It states they provide towels and toiletries and while this is somewhattrue it is also very misleading. The towels they provide were not even large enough for a 10 year old and even if they were it would be foolish to use them in the state they are provided, I am just so grateful I packed our own. The 'toiletries' they provide are a half used generic shower gel bottle which is attached to the wall and an almost empty hand wash. Absolutely no consideration for Covid or cross contamination. We slept on our own towels on top of the covers as I couldn't bring myself to look at the sheets and we used our tshirts to cover the pillows. I know this sounds extreme and I may come across as a Karen but I swear this is true. We would have left immediately if we did not live 3 hours away and needed to board a train first thing in the morning. There is a kettle and cups in the room which again were not clean but they do provide a few coffee and tea sachets. The television remote was so sticky and grubby looking that we decided to forgo attempting to watch TV. We left as early as possible the next day and binned all toiletries and toothbrushes etc we had brought with us as I couldn't imagine reusing them after being in such an unhygienic environment. I am sure the hotel will refute this review but I have over 30 pictures to prove it is all true. I am also planning to raise these issues with the Highland Council environmental services department as no one else should be out of pocket to stay in such a unsanitary room.

Well what can I say about this hotel, absolutely beautiful, from the minute we walked in and met by two lovely receptionists, we were an hour early for booking in we were told we could wait in one of the lovely reception rooms until our room was ready. The bedroom was absolutely spotless and the bathroom with boiling hot water on tap and over the bath shower was lovely. We decided to eat in at the hotel for dinner and were not disappointed the meals were beautiful and plenty the steak pie was to die for and a very good breakfast the next morning just set you up for a days sightseeing. The staff at this hotel are impeccable nothing is too much trouble and all very friendly and keep covid measures to the max. The chef well what can I say, his meals are delicious some of the best I have tasted we will definitely be back.

Booked this hotel for a social and walking visit to Fort William. The hotel is well situated in the town and very central for amenities. However, the hotel itself has a very ‘run down’ feel about it. The internal decor is beyond tired and is scruffy, worn, and very dated. There are worn-out carpets, (repaired with tape), peeling wallpaper, along with chipped and worn paintwork. Staff have obviously become ‘used’ to this environment. The room we had (109) was dark, dingy and depressing. The view was across a flat roof, complete with abandoned sweeping brushes, to other hotel bedrooms. The room decor was stuck in the 1980’s, with a tired and very dated en suite. The floors and walls in this extension part of the hotel are paper thin, allowing considerable noise intrusion from other bedrooms.
The hot buffet breakfast was ‘served’ in the main dining room and was mediocre, at best. Rubbery fried eggs, with hard yolks and human hair in the scrambled egg were all on offer, along with breakfast cups too small for the measure of hot water from the dispenser. Health and safety? The toaster bizarrely only toasting bread properly on one side?
There were two young members of waiting staff, (male & female), shouting conversations to each other across the length of the dining room, moaning about having been on duty from the early morning and seemingly eager to close the buffet as soon as possible after 9:30am. This pair appeared to be unaware that there were actually hotel guests present! There was no apparent supervision of these youngsters, who clearly didn’t know anything about staff etiquette. Not their fault. They clearly don’t know any better. Breakfast is served until 9:30am and they could not clear the buffet away quick enough after that time, around 9.35am. This is nowhere near to a sufficient period of ‘grace’ for breakfasters.
This hotel requires a complete ‘shake-up’ and I dread to think what visitors from overseas think of it! Come on, we can surely do better than this! Deary me!
We won’t be back!

I can confirm that we are continually investing in the hotel and we have completed phase of our bedroom refits just a year ago. Also new carpet fitting in all public areas will addressed in the near future. I'm disappointed to hear you did not enjoy our breakfast as we usually receive compliments. I will pass on your comments regarding your breakfast experience to our Head Chef. Please be assured that I have noted your comments and these will form part of our regular reviews. Stayed for two nights at the Alexandra Hotel and had an enjoyable break . Obviously with the current situation regarding Covid we were slightly apprehensive about how the hotel would be set up. We shouldn't have worried as on arrival it was clear the hotel had ample Gel sanitiser, wipes , floor markings etc . Also they are operating a one way system in the hotel which again puts guests at ease as you dont need to worry about bumping in to guests coming down the stairs against you etc. Our room was comfortable and well aired plus it appeared nice and clean although we were disappointed to see the bedside telephone was covered in dust which seemed to go against the rest of the room ?. We booked an evening meal and we thought it was first class in fact I'd say the chargrilled chicken was as good as i've tasted anywhere , The breakfasts were first class with nothing too much trouble for the staff , It was also comforting to notice the dining room staff were firmly but politely pointing out to any guests walking around in the restaurant without a mask on that they needed to wear them. Only other small negative was after our evening meal we went through to the bar for a drink as both parties in our company were celebrating an occasion , however after being informed it was table service and asked to take a seat ( again this made sense ) and although we were the only people in the bar we waited over ten minutes and eventually decided to move on .However overall it was a first class stay and would we recommend the hotel or stay again ? - Definitely Yes !

The tiredness of the place could have been overlooked had the cleanliness been in order, we had several basic areas of cleanliness overlooked in our room.
The room was small and very hot, there was no ventilation in the bathroom so showering for 2 people made the small space unbearable and windows were restricted due to close proximity of other rooms.
We were booked in for 2 nights but only stayed for 1, we chose travelodge for our 2nd night as we knew the comfort and cleanliness wouldn’t be an issue, the price certainly didn’t reflect the stay in comparison with what you would get with a budget chain.

On a positive note the food at dinner and breakfast was good and the waiting staff very friendly and helpful.

Yes there are hairdryers. At the Alex there isn’t a pool, but there is at their sister hotel, although check whether that is open, because it has been closed for awhile.

About 7:30 for the non-bus folks. There are tables for 2, 4, and more so if it’s just the two of you, you shouldn’t have an issue being seated. The bus tours’ tables are reserved.
