Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Stayed here for 2 nights in October last year - just got round to doing some reviews. We stayed for a wedding. The building itself is superb, very old and grand looking. The reception and other areas are all period correct. I have to mark this down to 3 stars though as there were quite a few issues with this hotel; 1) It's very dated inside. Whilst I appreciate they want to keep it period correct, the furniture in rooms is very old and showing a lot of signs of use. The TV in our room didn't work properly - the remote had the battery cover missing and they used tape in it's place. The "OK" button in the middle to actually select anything had broken off, so it was really hard to use the TV. WiFi was very slow and patchy throughout the hotel. Generally, it looks like it was last furnised in the 80's, and whilst everywhere has had a lick of paint since then, it definitely feels very dated inside. 2) The restaurant service was horrendous. Arrived 7pm thereabouts and the service was incredibly slow. I think it took us about 2 hours to get our food from sitting down receiving it. We had to ask several times for an update. I dont think this hotel has a star rating, but I'd probably give it a 3 star, very generously. For what they charge though, in comparison to hotels in the area, I'd expect it to be a minimum of a 4 star. It was one of the most expensive hotels I've stayed in, in Scotland. I just stayed (March 24) in the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness - 4 star hotel. It was cheaper, and stayed for 1 night longer! Their hotel is on another league too. I won't be coming back to this one I am afraid.

We had a lovely Saturday evening at the Muthu. The staff were attentive, polite and welcoming. The food was delicious and the service was flawless. Dylan was a delight and it was a pleasure to meet him. We usually visit the hotel a couple of times a year and this year didn’t disappoint.

Currently sitting in the hotel bedroom having had the most horrible dinner. Firstly asked for a wine list that took 5 minutes to produce . We then asked for a bottle of muscade, then told they had sold the last bottle at lunchtime so we ordered a different bottle. The bottle was dumped unopened on our table from the bar man. We Opened ourselves and poured . Took the bottle through to the restaurant which was fine. We ordered fish for my husband and the vegetarian curry for myself. The food arrived the fish was fine the vegetarian curry was the rawest curry I had ever tasted. I complained about the curry and nothing happened. About 10 minutes later I asked again as by this time my husband had finished his dinner. Was told the chef was looking at options. Another 10 minutes I spoke to another waitress and was told she was vegan and the curry was fine and as I didn't want the bean burger there was nothing they could serve me. Then the manager appeared and asked what I wanted and said i expected something to have been done when I first complained not 20 minutes later and it was now all toolate. Very, very poor vegetarian options and curry been made by cooking veg and chucking some raw spices in the top. Totally unacceptable and poor response to say if I didnt want the bean burger option there wasn't another option. Clearly they employ a cook not a chef who can't provide an alternative vegetarian option . Would not advise any vegetarian to go here due to basic options

Thank you for your review. Again my apologises for the issue with dinner, this should have been dealt with much sooner and much more efficiently during service. The team should have reacted sooner and dealt with the issue you had in a more professional way and looked after you better. I am sorry this was not done and I have spoken to the team regards what we would have expected them to do better. The staff do know how to pour wine, very disappointing that this was not done correctly. Overall please accept my apologises that your dinner experience was not how it should have been. Kind Regards Murray McPhee General Manager

Excellent hotel , given a free upgrade on our room , it was huge !! Massive en-suite bathroom / shower room . The room was clean and well presented , I thought the bed was going to be to soft but I had the best nights sleep there . Staff were all nice and friendly , a bit scarce on the ground but there season was just 2 days from finishing , they did a good job nonetheless . The dining was good , not a large menu but more than adequate , breakfast was also excellent and hearth . My wife and I had a lovely time here and will be back .

The hotel is an old castle/manor home with so much character. Our rooms turned out to be a suite with 2 bedrooms and a living room. The staff was exceptionally helpful. They even have 3 Highland Cows in the front pasture. The only so-called downside is that the restaurant was average.

AVOID MUTHU NEWTON HOTEL IN NAIRN Oh well no hope of my money coming in before Christmas from the hotel 😡 Absolutely devastated that they have done this to me and left me having to borrow money off people to get the stuff I needed for the kids Christmas. Muthu Newton Hotel I am beyond disgusted that a member of your staff stole my £1000 of Christmas vouchers and aren't doing the decent thing and even trying to help someone out so close to Christmas. Nearly 7 weeks ago I called regarding them being in the hotel room and 2 days later I was told a member of staff found them but now they are missing. I would highly recommend telling all your friends and family to avoid staying here due to their lack of care towards a guest that has been left in debt with family just to be able to get stuff for my kids Christmas when I saved up all year to get those vouchers to make it a bit easier for us this year. I've been let down over and over again by this company so I will 100% be avoiding staying here ever again. I feel so bad for the general manager in nairn as he has tried his best to get this sorted and unfortunately he is being let down also due to this matter. I WILL be going to the papers regarding this and I WILL be taking use to court over this as you have ruined my Christmas this year and not only mine but my kids aswell as they have had to sit and listen to me getting mad and upset, watching me cry and giving me hugs to try make me feel better. I'm so thankful I have the family I do that helped me when I needed it or I'd of been watching my kids wake up on christmas morning with next to nothing :(

Very swanky and a bit off our route but well worth the extra drive. Our room was massive and beautifully decorated. From the plaid carpet to the large TV and huge bathroom, it was perfect. The dining room for supper and breakfast was gorgeous and the food delicious. Set in rolling countryside, the Newton is a renovated former mansion and family home. Frequented by the likes of Charlie Chaplin, the hotel is a charming mix of old, Art Deco and new furnishings and lighting. You can just imagine the stories and lives that unfolded here through the years.
