Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Absolutely not value for money, decor very tired carpets dirty , leak marks on bedroom ceiling. Restaurant was closed. 5 star price for 2 star facilities. Very disappointed , unfortunately I've deleted the photos I had from last year. 2 nights stay cost us almost £500. This was a surprise for my 60th birthday

Beautiful from the outside but sadly past its best internally. Fabrics that fell apart in your hand and lukewarm showers and a cold room. Stale croissants at breakfast and hard eggs. The hotel has a haunted mansion feel when you pull up but honestly I’d have given an extra star for a ghost. Manager lives on site didn’t really seem to care about cold shower which I found out affected all guests. I get the feeling this is a hotel in its death throws. Pity as it could have been amazing in the right hands.

My 2nd time here and it gets better every time. Great value for money, nice comfy rooms with recently upgraded ensuite toilet/shower room facilities. Great location for travelling around the local area. And staff who go that extra mile. What more do you need?

This is a faded jewel It was once a really sumptuous venue for an escape. The bedrooms are still lovely - decent sheets and decor and excellent bathroom The public areas are tired and lacking No evening meals any more Bar decent enough but lacks character it once had No swimming pool any more Breakfast was reasonable I used to come as a treat but now it’s just a functional place to stay a night Sad I can’t say better than that

When we drove up, I wanted so much to like this place. The outside was gorgeous but, unfortunately once we got inside, it was a different story. Although beautiful, the inside was tired and in need of a major refurbishment. The carpets, and everything else, were very worn. There was a sign that said the restaurant was closed with the exception of breakfast. Our room was very much the same however, the bed was lovely with crisp white sheets and a comfortable mattress. The breakfast was delicious and served by some of the nicest people we met on our Scottish vacation.

Stayed for one night. Lovely grand building. The restaurant was closed for evening meals so we went to Tesco which is next door. for nibbles and sat on the hotel terrace overlooking the river and had drinks from the bar. Our room was number 4 and I couldn’t fault it. Lovely pillows, big bed. The bathroom was spotless. Breakfast was perfect. Nice pit of coffee too. All in all a lovely night stay. I would return for sure.

Terrific looking building and wonderfully friendly staff. Great location for exploring Elgin. Sadly, the hotel is a little tired and faded. The furnishings now look a long way past their best and the restaurant has had to close for evening meals due to lack of staff. We did still get a splendid Full Scottish cooked breakfast. Our room had a gigantic sleigh bed which was marvellous and a similarly big room to put it in. But there were lots of little things wrong with it - the sash windows were very dirty, there’s no fridge or coffee machine, the shower hose was broken, the sink leaked, the grouting between tiles had disintegrated and the extractor fan went on for 17 minutes after switching the light off! Most disappointing was that we’d told the hotel when booking was that we were returning here for our 30th wedding anniversary after honeymooning here. But there was no acknowledgment of this at all. No flowers, no card, nothing. I don’t expect champagne or chocolates or anything extravagant like that but a simple congratulatory message on arrival would have been nice. But no, it was completely ignored.

It’s hard to say it was bad, just meh. We stayed here 20-odd years ago and it was buzzing with staff and residents. This time it was like a ghost hotel run by less than skeleton staff - I only saw one person. After he checked us in at reception, we never saw one human being during our one night stay. There is a wee notice in reception stating there is no evening restaurant service and they can recommend restaurants in Elgin. I can see this has niggled other people. However we were visiting friends. We needed an early start in the morning and so we missed out on breakfast too. An 8am start for breakfast is a bit late for a hotel? Anyway it’s such a shame for such a plush and magnificent building. I hate to say this place is in need of something like Best Western to take over and invest in it. We will stay elsewhere in future I think.

Fantastic looking building from the outside, but sadly lacking in quality inside. We had Room no 10 which overlooked the big wheely bins, not a good start! Wallpaper peeling off walls, the mattress was ancient and uneven, there were handles missing from drawers and some drawers and wardrobe door wouldn't even close properly, what looked like mould/mildew spots on bathroom ceiling as extraction fan did not work, also DVD player under TV did not work. Breakfast was a fiasco, everything was overcooked, the worst eggs benedict ever (tesco muffin, and both the poached eggs were actually hard boiled)
