Just returned from a 2 night stay at this wonderful Coaching Inn. The staff were friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The food was excellent and the drinks reasonably priced, £2 for a single Gordons Gin!
Our room was on the second floor, no. 38. There is no lift at the hotel which is not an issue for us however if you have mobility issues ask for a room on the first floor. The room was fab, tastefully decorated and very clean. The bathroom was compact, again very clean and had fluffy white towels. The only thing it didn't have was a shaving socket, we use electric toothbrushes so we had to buy normal toothbrushes at the shop just across the road, not an issue just wanted to give this information to anyone else who uses an electric toothbrush. The bed was quite firm with crisp white bedding and 4 very good quality pillows.
Breakfast was superb, excellent variety and cooked to perfection. We ate outside in the courtyard the first morning and in the bar the second morning. The staff are constantly cleaning everything down and your cutlery is given to you wrapped in a crisp white napkin. They really do everything possible to ensure your safety.
We ate in the Bell the two nights we stayed and again the food was excellent. Great choice, we had something different both evenings. There is an Indian restaurant across the road which looks good however we didn't try it this time.
I would highly recommend this hotel and we will definitely be going back.

We recently stayed in January 2022 on a dinner bed and breakfast basis.

There is a large car park to the rear of the hotel which made parking easy. Check-in was friendly and efficient.

The room.

We stayed in a Classic Double and were allocated a “Garden Room” which was very peaceful. The room was a good size with plenty of storage space. There was also complimentary bottled water, a Nespresso machine plus tea, coffee, hot chocolate and cookies as well as large bathrobes and slippers. The tea and coffee holder was stained and dirty and had previously spilled sugar still in it and one of the coffee cups was dirty.

The bathroom was a good size with good quality thick towels. The shower above the bath had disappointingly low water pressure and a ceiling hatch was covered in dirty finger marks!

Dinner.

A two course meal was included in the “Lazy Sunday Offer” and for mains we had roast pork and roast beef. The roast pork was very nice and the cauliflower cheese was excellent. The roast beef was quite tough and fatty but overall we both enjoyed our mains. For dessert we chose apple & mincemeat crumble and chocolate delice both of which were excellent and the service was friendly and helpful throughout.

Breakfast.

We chose Eggs Royale and full English, both of which were very good. There was also a good selection of cereals, jams, yoghurts and juices available. Once again the service was very friendly and efficient.

To sum up despite a couple of issues we had a very enjoyable stay and thought that the “Lazy Sunday” offer of dinner, bed and breakfast for £119.00 represented very good value and we would not hesitate to return to The Bell Inn again in the future.

We stayed one night here and found The Bell to be closer to a boutique hotel than a pub with rooms in the quality of accommodation and standards of service. Our (superior) booked room had a comfortable 5' bed and a sitting area with a small table and two armchairs, a couple more useful tabletops, one with a comprehensively supplied tea tray with Nespresso. The ensuite, which mostly looked new, had a separate shower as well as a bath and 'designer' toiletries. Other luxuries such as bathrobes were also provided. Decor was very traditional in style with antiques, crafts, and a small collection of interesting books on the local area. Everything was spotless. The only downside were the single glazed windows overlooking the road which let in more noise than would otherwise have been the case. The hotel has a private car park with some EV bays and there are more spaces to park in the road outside. The bars, public areas and rooms are all connected with lots of stairs, some needing care and awareness to negotiate, and I did not notice a lift, but there are apparently accessible rooms available. Breakfast is served in a first floor room above the bar areas. This consists of a very limited self-service cold buffet consisting of just cereals, yoghurts and preserves. However they do offer a wide choice of cooked options served at the beautifully laid tables with their crisp white tablecloths. The Full English was excellent with the best poached eggs I've ever had. All the staff we encountered were friendly and cheerful. The entire operation here is of an exceptionally high standard (apart maybe from the restaurant - see my separate review), and at a very accessible cost.

We booked into the restaurant when visiting the area this weekend and everything was faultless. The restaurant and bar have gone above and beyond to make their guests feel safe. We were welcomed at the entrance and given throwaway menus whilst the hostess explained to us how everything was laid out. All tables were spaced out in the restaurant, bistro and bar to ensure distancing was in place.

The food was as stunning as we remembered from our last visit in February and the service was impeccable. All the staff were friendly and welcoming, especially Jean.

Table service is also available in the bar to avoid any queuing.

We felt safe from the moment we arrived and it was so lovely to have been able to dine out in such a wonderful establishment after the last few months.

Well done everyone at The Bell Inn!

We had a lovely 2 night staycation at The Bell in Stilton. The food warm excellent. The chef gets top marks for warming hollandaise sauce for Eggs Benedict and Florentine and for serving scones warm (newly baked?) at the cream tea.
We stayed in an Accessible Room and the staff did everything possible to make my husband's stay easy and relaxed.

We’ve just returned from a 2 nights stay with my son as a special treat for him working so hard during lockdown and wow did these guys treat us well or what?!
From the second we walked through the door to the second we left the place was impeccable. Emma worked her socks off to make us feel special and even organised for us to have our dinner in a quiet room last night because I stupidly forgot to book a table, and we were starving after a long day at IWM Duxford.
Room number 33 was suitably spooky as requested, and my son and I are certain we had 3 knocks on the wall (which is in the attic so technically impossible unless there was a roofer up there....there wasn’t ) and the door knob turned several times in the night! Needless to say I did not get up for the toilet at 3am when I woke up, and kept my eyes firmly shut just in case Dick Turpin emerged from the shadows and stood by my bed!!
Rooms are decorated beautifully with everything you need during your stay, and were super clean and tidy and my son even had a little gift waiting for him which made his weekend!
Food in restaurant was fabulous and the atmosphere of the hotel is great combining modern living whilst respecting and maintaining the quirky period features of the building. Fireplaces are gorgeous by the way.
Emma you have been fantastic, rarely do I meet someone who gives everything they have to making someone’s stay so special, but you gave it your all, whatever they pay you, you deserve a rise! You truly are 1 in a million and we can’t thank you enough!!

Having stayed in a number of “coaching inn group” hotels, we booked a last minute weekend getaway knowing we would be in good hands as we enjoy the old character buildings and this group has certainly renovated them to a high standard.

The only room available was an accessible room, which was infact located in the garden annex, so a newer room. The room itself was fine, with a wet room (no bath). A couple of cleanliness issues which I did mention to reception, but not sure if they would be addressed. Some of the wall ornaments were covered in heavy dust, needing a serious clean. This can only be seen when lying on the bed. But other than that, the room was spotless.

We did find the room very warm, and even turned the heater off. Maybe this is due the underfloor heating in the bathroom, which was lovely when getting out of the shower. There is a skylight/window which we couldn’t reach, it was open thankfully for air, and to cool the room, but the blind did not cover the whole window, so the light was streaming into the room from early morning.

The bar also emptied bottles in the bins late at night, which from the noise of the glass made smashing, was close to the room, around 11pm in the evening. As the window was open, this did wake us both evenings with the loud crashing noise.

There was also a dog in the room next to us, so could hear the dog barking, trotting around on the wooden floor during the night and guests in/out a lot to walk the dog.

Feeling like I am writing a review for “four in a bed”, these are only minor niggles, and next time, I would prefer to stay in the main house and not a garden room.

We had lunch on both days in the bar, delicious and fantastic value for money sandwiches. We had dinner in the upstairs restaurant next to the fire one evening too. This was lovely, a nice setting. Same menu as downstairs, but a nicer environment for dinner. The food was OK, more bistro pub than restaurant.

Breakfasts were good. Same menu as other Coaching Inns – BUT - the buffet was not the same. This time, there was no fresh fruit or pastries, only juice and cereals. Hot food was cooked fresh and was warm. A great start to the day. Delicious variety’s of eggs benedict.

Staff during the day were lovely, attentative and always smiling. The evening bar staff were OK but not as friendly and it did seem like ordering a cocktail was a chore for them, especially when they had to open a manual for the instructions.

Overall a nice weekend, close to Peterborough for some early Christmas shopping.

I’m sat in my room at the Bell Inn listening to The Weather Girls famous “it’s raining men” - from the event taking place below us. It’s been the usual wedding set.
The fittings on the ceiling are shaking to the heavy bass tones.
If I’d have known there was a wedding on I would have chosen a different venue for my son and me to stay at.
But nobody told us.
Sad.
I’d stay clear unless they can guarantee Tom Jones won’t be joining you for a quick rendition of “the green green grass of home”
Uptown Girl has just started - at least it’s the original Billy Joel version.
Apart from the DJs choice of music the Bell Inn is lovely.

Good evening, Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I can only apologise for our lack of communication regarding your stay. It is normally our process to advise all guests of any weddings or functions that may be taking part during their stay. Clearly we failed in this regard. It would be lovely if you chose to come back and I would be grateful if you could refer to this correspondence on booking. I very much hope to see you again, Kind regards, Jo Grimshaw

Spent 2 nights here while touring the area on our tandem. The staff were very helpful and accommodating in helping us store our bike in a secure place.
Our superior room was well furnished and came with little extras like a Nespresso machine, bathrobes and chocolate.
The inn is steeped in history and the rooms are decorated to reflect that yet come with all modern conveniences.
The hotel was spotlessly clean and covid rules were adhered to.
We enjoyed every single meal from breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner. The ladies at breakfast were always cheerful and welcoming. The eggs Benedict were our favourite breakfast dish and the evening menu had many wonderful choices. Don't miss the Stilton fries!
We have stayed in a few hotels in the Coaching Inn group and this one certainly lived up to our expectations .

We were really looking forward to eating and staying here, but alas, the Bell failed to deliver.

Our room (#22) was great; clean, warm and comfortable.

We ate in the raised area just to the left of the bar and to be honest, their offerings were a bit hit and miss.

The Southern Fried Chicken Fillets (pictured) @£8 were out of a packet. The House Steak Burger @£15 was distinctly average and was served with the most disgusting fat chips I've ever tried. The Smoked Mackerel Salad @ £7 was very good. Sautéed Greens @£3.50 were nothing of the sort, they were steamed.

Most of the serving staff were pretty useless (we had to ask for water for the table 3 times before it was delivered) and we were ignored when we tried to get their attention; we had to get up and corner someone in order to complain.

However, other members of staff were very professional, so it was all a bit hit and miss.

We won't return.
