We chose this hotel on the basis of it being a convenient location for two couples to meet up for dinner and drinks as well as having the chance to wallow in nostalgia.
After a wonderful welcome from Sophie, the rest of the stay became increasingly bizarre.
The bedroom was comfortable and clearly refurbished. The shower was good but there was no place to put soap, shampoo etc.
drinks at the bar were expensive - £50 for a bottle of regular Provence Rose - and the bar staff, although pleasant seemed inexperienced.
For dinner we chose well, service was good and the food was also very good. Other diners were not so content with several clearly
disgruntled. Not ideal surroundings.
Breakfast this morning was where it got really strange. It was a buffet but eggs had to be ordered, cooked and given on a plate so the rest of the meal could be collected - through two closed doors and down a set of stairs to another breakfast room. I know staff shortages are serious but this was crazy.
Disappointing visit

Hotel is very nice, we’ll maintained and very clean. Staff were fantastic as was the food.

Only downside was the price. For over £190 for a room I’d have expected at least an ironing board and an iron in the room and wasn’t even a biscuit on the tea making tray in the room (who doesn’t like a complimentary biscuit? 😀). I’d expect to pay this for a similar hotel in somewhere like York city centre, not just outside Peterborough next to the A1.

Not a very energy conscious location - my room was set at 24C when I arrived so had to open the windows straight away as it was like a sauna. My colleagues said the same.

As above staff were fantastic and very helpful, dinner and breakfast were also very good.

We visited today with friends for the 8 course tasting menu. I have fond memories of The Haycock. In it’s day it was a great place, sister hotel to The George of Stamford. Unfortunately since it’s hay day the hotel has changed ownership twice, fallen into disrepair and lost it’s magic. On arriving it was evident the new owners have attempted to bring this landmark venue back to its former glory. We were so looking forward to returning to The Haycock and experience a five star treat. On entering the “Prévost”restaurant we were greeted by a mush mash of colour and uncomfortable furniture. The old wooden and stone floors have been replaced with laminate, and strangely the main restaurant is now situated in a cold conservatory. We sat in a steel bird cage looking onto an unfinished walled garden with exposed drainage pipes and a randomly placed fence panel. The toilets were cold, without mirrors and were unisex. My wife had a shock when she encountered a gentleman emerging from trap two. Each course was delivered and described by the chef who cooked it. Nice touch however the smell of the kitchen was evident on their greying whites. The whole experience lacked atmosphere and dragged on slightly. A disappointment unfortunately for a date we were so very much looking forward to. Obviously a huge amount of money has been spent, but I get the impression it needs a further injection of funds to get it finished. Perhaps they have opened too soon? On a positive note the waiting staff were welcoming and attentive, but the memory that stays with us was the cold atmosphere and unfinished construction. I hope that when the builders have gone, and the landscaping is finished it can once again be the much needed venue to set the standard locally.

Had the most amazing 24 hour stay over at Haycock Manor, what a hidden gem this hotel is.

I love hotels which come with history and this hotel does that, the outside of the venue is still original and stunning, a great location just of the motorway.

I attended a business event at the hotel and everything was wonderful.

I think my room was the best part of stay, the bathroom and bed out of this world!

Having attended a local cycling event this was the perfect retreat. A lovely historic hotel that oozes charm. It is literally a few hundred yards from the A1 but it is very quiet and peaceful. It is situated in the charming village of Wansford. There is a huge car park with CCTV. The reception was first rate, very welcoming, friendly and professional. The room which allowed us to take our small dog was large, comfortable with everything that you need. The garden view was lovely. The bar offered a good selection of beers, wines and spirits at very reasonable prices. The food in the restaurant was excellent and again good value with locally sourced produce. The Salmon was exceptional. The breakfast the following morning was again excellent and the staff again very welcoming and friendly. We booked two rooms and enjoyed our very brief stay but will certainly be back next year for the cycling event but may well extend our stay next time. Excellent and recommended.

Called in here for a coffee Sat morning 22nd Feb. Inside one person on reception who directed us round to the bar area to order a coffee. Walked through the lounge area which was a meeting point for an arriving wedding party. Evidence of no staff around so returned to reception and lady there said she was managing reception and would be coming round to make us coffee!! She also said she was waiting for staff to come in. We ordered two coffees which were duly produced from the push of buttons on a coffee machine. So no proper coffee produced here!! At best it was Luke warm and tasted terrible. Charged £5.90 for two instant coffees is just unacceptable. Also as the wedding party was gathering there was no proper place to sit to enjoy our drink. There was also evidence of dirty surfaces on tables and around doors etc, could do with a deep clean. The overall feeling was a place being run down to closing.
Once upon time this place was a go to destination for a good meal and there was a good vibe here. Sadly that has all gone.

What shame. This hotel could be as nice as the reception area and the building's exterior suggests, but it's just a shambles of faded glory. I had one of the better rooms but the shower and other fittings were hanging off the wall and the bathroom window frame was so warped it wouldn't actually close. This made it pretty cold but the boxed-in radiator couldn't be turned up. Then the curtains fell down. I'd advise taking some tools.
Staff are friendly if you can find them, but I felt sorry for them. The breakfast was hilarious: the blackened toast was so burned it looked like barbecue charcoal. I mean it must actually have been on fire at one point but they served it anyway. And this a venue which happily charges £20 for a burger.
Don't pay more than £50 and you probably won't be too upset but if you want a comfy room try the Premier Inn.

Before I review actual hotel I do want to make it clear that the staff were lovely, very attentive and did their upmost to make it enjoyable from what was a really bad experience, everything else was appalling! We didn’t actually stay there but the rest of our extended family did and we clearly dodged a bullet. The rooms were way overpriced and mouldy. The showers weren’t even giving out hot water.
We had a table booked and the food and drink was ok but totally shocked when we were presented with a bill of £47 per person!!! Way way way overpriced. Limited drinks and glasses at bar provided.

We had intended visiting the new coffee shop opposite but it was full so went across the road to this hotel. Received a lovely welcome from the lady on reception who showed us through to the lounge area where they had lovely comfy sofas to sit on and we ordered coffees and tea. All of the staff were so friendly and couldn't have made us feel more welcome. We had filter coffees and tea and they also brought us some home made complementary biscuits which were delicious. Considering we were not staying at the hotel and had only called in to see if we could have a coffee we were made to feel as welcome as we would if we were staying in one of their rooms. Absolutely recommend this hotel if you are looking for somewhere close to Peterborough.

I’m really struggling to understand the recent reviews on here, in fact I was incredibly concerned about this break after reading them. However in my opinion they couldn’t be further from the truth.

I’m incredibly picky when it comes to health and hygiene partly because of my OCD and partly because I was a cleaner when I was 16. This place was spotless, every part of the hotel was immaculate. The room that we stayed in part of the old stables with wooden beams not one cobweb and believe me I look as hate spiders!

Lots of staff available, all really helpful and knowledgeable including the owner who in our opinion is nothing like what was described previously.

The food was amazing, we had afternoon tea and dinner, not one dish we had was anything less than exceptional.

We also went on a few long walks around the local countryside beautiful area.

I would highly recommend this hotel and will happily return. Thank you so much for making this a very enjoyable stay.
