It has been 10 years since our last stay at The Stuart, in the intervening years it has become part of the Best Western franchise, if I’m honest, I can’t see any visible improvement, apart from the disappearance of a bucket that was in the corridor collecting rainwater!

Reception team very friendly, warned us about a private function that was being held at the property and the potential for noise, thankfully our room was at the rear of the hotel and we didn’t hear anything.

Room was comfortable but very tired, bathroom very dated with grotty sealant and grout.

Tea and coffee supplied but insufficient portions of milk, additional supplies can be obtained from reception.

Good selection of food available at breakfast, both cooked and continental options.

Hotel is in a good location for the station (5 minutes) and Derby city centre (10 minutes) and car parking is a reasonable cost - pay at reception as the rate is slightly cheaper (£2.95 as opposed to £4.95).

Rate was reasonable for the night, breakfast was included in the price which was a bonus, despite the hotel being tired, if the price was right I would consider staying here again.

We stayed here Saturday night on our National Holidays coach trip.
We had a family room 203 on the first floor, the room was very clean and tidy with a large flat screen TV, double bed and bed settee already made up for our arrival. Beds were comfortable and we had a choice of a thick or thin pillow which was good.
We had no issues with the WiFi as other reviews had commented.
Plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits in the room, which surprised us as normally these are rationed at hotels we stop over in.
The room also came with air conditioning and a fan, we had the fan on as the air conditioning was poor and the room surprisingly stuffy.
The evening meal was good and generous portions and a few choices were offered. Breakfast was full English and continental choices, yoghurts, cold meats, cheeses, croissants, pastry's, fruit, cereals, cereal bars etc.
All staff we dealt with were pleasant and nothing was too much trouble.

The only bad points were:-
The shower got weaker the hotter you wanted it to be!
The full English consisted of, bacon (looked boiled rather than fried?), sausage, hash browns, beans, half grilled tomatoes, scrambled egg and (tinned?) Mushrooms.
I would have chosen beans on toast from the selection but no bread was out when I came down to eat.
The evening meal if 3 courses took from 19.30 to 21.30 to eat, before dessert came most of the guests with young children had gone to bed!

If the review had a "good" button I would have chosen that so a 3.5 is nearer the mark.

I was there as part of a party of around 50 for a Dinner Dance, have been there before Covid struck for the samw event and you could not fault it. What a difference experience it was this time ! Starter of Prawn Cocktail just Prawns on sauce on lettuce, no tomatoes, cucumber oe even a slice of lemon ! Main course was served on freezing cold plates, food was barely warm, and they bought our table a small dish of veg AFTER we had finished our food ! Only good thing about main was the chicken was lovely and tender, but only warm ! Dessert I had Apple Crumble and custard, a decent portion, but again only warm. The hotel DJ did a fab disco, so well done him.
Then there was breakfast ! Only continental breakfast, Not the full English as well as have had on our last stay ! Apparently,
There was no chef ! Bagels were rock hard and not edible ! Constantly running out of food and having to wait. There was only one staff member in the restaurant for most of the time doing her very best to help with the receptionist coming to assist when she had no one at the desk. Definitely the fault here lies with the management. I felt sorry for the staff/lack of having to deal with this.
Will not be going again, very dissapointing.

After reading the reviews the day before our stay I was a bit worried however there was absolutely no need to be.
We arrived on a coach trip to visit Matlock Bath and Bakewell and were booked in for one night dinner, bed and breakfast.
Check in…quick and easy,Lauren explained everything quickly and clearly.
Dinner…was absolutely fine,i opted for the cottage pie and it was hot and tasty, personally I would have liked some veg to be served with it but that option wasn’t there,I followed with apple crumble and custard again it was fine.Lauren was clearing tables….
We returned from the fireworks at Matlock bath and went straight to the bar, cosy clean and again Lauren was there, what a girl, attentive, cheerful, gregarious an all round fabulous asset to the hotel, she asked if we required more drinks before she left for the evening…it would have been rude to say no so we had another large wine each.
Bed,clean and comfy, the rooms were a bit noisy with other guests, flushing toilets and running water, bathroom was clean, however the sealant around the bath does need replacing ( room 211 ) and the shower head had a mind of its own, there was plenty hot water and decent sized towels, personally I don’t like shower curtains as I always think they are grubby so a screen would have been better.
Breakfast….lots of choice and one young girl in particular was helpful and apologetic when the coffee machine played up,plenty of choice, food was hot, plenty fruit juice available.
I have travelled several times with coach companies and this hotel is one of the best we have stayed at.
All in all a great stay.
10 out of 10 for Lauren
Keep up the good work and sort the bath sealant out.

The hotel is dated and the room booked as an accessible room is not. Access to the shower meant a person had to be able to walk into the show. Combination of corridor size lip on shower. Access to the room was via a narrow corridor and required 2 * 90degree turns. And the angle of the door required the same again - it is very tight for anyone who has anything other than slim wheelchair.

To enter and leave the corridor which the room is on there is a manual door. The duty manager suggested it is acceptable to have to ring reception to be let out of the corridor.

Finally we were due to stay their to conduct a disability review in the local area and had booked a meeting room. Access via the inside of the hotel was via a door and corridor that was not accessible. It was suggested it is acceptable to leave the building and enter via another entrance.

We didn’t stay in the hotel after seeing this and booked elsewhere as we didn’t find this acceptable. The duty manager couldn’t see that this was problematic or discriminatory.

The hotel was dated, sign outside falling off, water pouring out of a tube on the roof. All in all the images on the Best Western website are not representative of the rooms we saw, downstairs and bedrooms.

So bad it was funny

On checking in our booking was not on the hotel system.

Radiators had not been turned on, so cold room.

Had to play hide and seek to find the tea and coffee, it was hidden in a draw.

Both rooms we stayed in were large, bed comfortable, bedding was clean and fresh. But lacked mattress/pillow protectors. It looks like the hotel are trying to decorate, but looks like touch ups, paint splashed over the bedside table and phone, clearly the decorator needs to put their glasses on.

Room only set up for one person ie only one set of towels and toiletries. Asked for another set of towels, was brought a hand towel. Asked again for a bath towel, was brought two hand towels!

After day one toilet stopped flushing, cistern would not fill with water.

Moved room.

Sunday 7.45am the music started in reception. 10 mins later an alarm started across the road.

A very disappointing Breakfast experience - hot selection only breakfast baps which consisted of precooked bacon/sausage, scrambled egg which is warmed up in the microwave, bacon was rock hard on the first morning, slight less brittle on the second morning. Juices tasted watered down, tea/coffee pre made in flasks, unpleasantly stewed. Danish pastry, crumpets and bread left uncovered. No tongs. Fruit consisted of limp looking apples and oranges. Unfresh Danish pastries. Service was like a faulty towers experience ; )

On the plus side, great location for the town centre.

Reception staff were excellent, professional and friendly, they did their best to rectify the issues above. However management did NOT reply to our email detailing the above!
Our hope that the new management would take on board feed back and make improvement sadly fell on deaf ears.

We booked to go away for a weekend and they emailed a choice to bid to upgrade we ended up paying an extra £40 for a suite. They upgraded us to a room with faults they also knew it had. Also the room wasn’t particularly clean there were stains all over the sofa. The shower was awful and it was very difficult to even wash our hair as the shower basically dripped. When we spoke to the manager he told us they knew they had a problem with the room and offered us to go to a different room in the morning for a shower (not so easy with a little baby). We paid for a breakfast one of the days and when coming down we were able to dish up half a breakfast and then over the space of 30 minutes the other things came out one by one. So the breakfast wasn’t hot at all. However someone then came in after the breakfast cut off time and got a fresh breakfast cooked for them. We then complained as enough was enough and they offered a refund 4 weeks later still no refund and 15 phone calls and lots of lies from their manager Summit. Just be careful booking with this hotel. The staff that work there are lovely however the senior staff are liars so if you have problems with the hotel then you’ll end up with it unresolved. I wouldn’t go back and I visit derby a lot of times a year as I have family there!

Worst place we have ever stayed in the uk. The hotel is clean but very worn and jaded. Staff are lovely but they have some very strange practices.
No cooked breakfast so you have to go out to the greasy spoon next door. no make up of rooms “unless requested” and apparently leaving the PLEASE MAKE UP MY ROOM sign on your door from 9am until 10.30 pm is not enough to prompt a change of towels and empty of bins.
Small room and gymnastically small bathroom. It was like being on a cruise ship without the benefits of cheap booze and bright sunshine.
The hotel bar has a very poor stock with no single malt from any distillery anywhere in the world.
All in all it is charmless place to stay and when I complained to the general manager he had the temerity to suggest that the service was ok because of covid. Clearly all the other hotels I have stayed in recently do not share this view. I repeat, worst hotel ever in the uk for me and it undermines my confidence in Best Western as a chain.

Welcoming, Friendly and Efficient Staff - we were made to feel very welcome nothing is too much trouble!!
Calm, relaxed, and spotless environment..
Although we didn’t eat breakfast the continental spread offered sounded lovely,
Drinks in the bar (white wine) were of good quality and reasonably priced ..
great location to explore central Derby..short walking distance to the main town /shops /bars etc

If you want a good night's sleep I don't recommend this Hotel, the walls are paper thin so you can hear your neighbours and people coming and going in the corridor outside (The big gap at the bottom of the door didn't help). There was a screeching noise in the room (seemed to come on when people used the water in the adjoining rooms).

The room was very small (basically just room for a bed) and had a view of a brick wall, and the shower was minuscule. All in all the hotel is very tatty and it seems like it's been left to rundown.

Spend the extra and go somewhere else!
