I am fond of privately run hotels, especially where they work to keep interesting old buildings going.

We enjoyed our stay, friendly staff, a place to store our cycles, and good food. The oldest part of the building with high ceilings is quite small and I think only the first 4 bedrooms are part of it. Our bedroom 7 (sadly in the newer wing) had a large quirky bathroom, lots of brass fixtures with white ornate ceramics and dark wood toilet seating. Clearly old and a little tired but unique. The hotel location is very quiet though sound insulation inside the hotel is not so great and you can hear people moving about or in next door rooms. We got a good nights rest though as other guests (generally an older generation were quiet).

Food in the restaurant was relatively pricey for dinner see menu but it was prepared to a high standard. The borreli room for dining was nicely presented but ambiance was spoiled a little by Formica topped tables and sauces in sachets, bringing back table cloths would make a big difference.

Breakfast was excellent and serving lady made a big effort to keep a full restaurant well attended to.

Before I had even arrived I was impressed! My husband and I booked as a last minute Honeymoon retreat and was not disappointed. The price for a dinner bed and breakfast rate directly with them is amazing value. Not long after we made the booking Angela called to both book us in for dinner and let us know there was a function going on. Very informative, some hotels don’t bother to do that!

When we arrived she was lovely and remembered us from the phone and checked us in to our room so nicely. The room was spacious and peaceful in face the whole stay was peaceful you’d never know they had another event on! Bathroom was modern while the room decor was a tad dated but that added to the ambiance of the place. The room was cleaned so well even though the shower was all glass there wasn’t a smudge in sight and you could see the lines in the carpet from where it was vacuumed. Very clean.

The meal was incredible, we were served by the star of the show ange again! Each course was full of flavour and was such amazing portion size I was so full and felt so sad that I couldn’t take even more bites! Everything that we both had was so fresh and delicious. The pasta was cooked to perfection, the burger was juicy and seasoned amazingly. Presentation was spot on too! Great drinks selection too. Thank you again for the bubbly to celebrate our Honeymoon!

I was quite surprised to see that there was no continental option for breakfast only cooked food, That didn’t phase us to be honest as when you go to a hotel you’ve got to have a cooked breakfast! The scrambled eggs were seasoned well, I was impressed that even though the menu didn’t mention a vegetarian breakfast when I asked for one I still got tasty vegetarian sausages! Very accommodating.

Angela served us breakfast and checked us out! That girl needs a raise!!

Definitely will be coming back for another stay in the future:)

We stayed here while walking The Ridgeway and it was probably the best stop en route, an impressive building surrounded by lovely gardens and good food in the restaurant. Large room with very spacious bathroom, lovely library/lounge area and the best feature was the staircase and dome. All conveniences provided in the room including an iron and ironing board, tea and coffee in proper mugs and all at a very good price for B&B.

Easy to find, just minutes away from M4.

Pretty and traditional property and grounds. Upon entering the place was warm and friendly. The young receptionist was very pleasant and helpful. As we were a party of eight, we wandered into the bar, however this was cold as there was no heating in that room. We asked a couple of times for heating to be put on, when it was it took ages to warm up as it's a large room. We then went to our rooms to freshen up before dinner and they were also cold. As the heating is controlled by reception, we had to ask a couple of times for this to be heated. By the time it was warmed we were ready to go down for dinner.
The food was very good and the service was too. Breakfast was also freshly cooked to order and was good.
The room we had was a bit dated, but clean and well equipped with a comfortable bed so we had a good rest. Some of the bedrooms have been modernised and I assume they are working their way through the rooms.
The only downside for us was that the place wasn't heated very well.
The young lady who was on reception seemed to be the only member of staff available, she was doing reception, bar work and then assisted serving at dinner. She seemed to be busy all the time and rushed off her feet, she could have done with another member of staff to assist her chores.
The car park is quite a way from the hotel and had huge puddles so we parked at drop off area.
On the whole it was an enjoyable stay and we would return.

We stayed at Chiseldon House 16th to 20th Oct. in an executive room on a dinner bed and breakfast basis.

We were very impressed with the standard of service considering how short staffed they and almost every hotel and restaurant is at the moment. The reception staff sorted out a change to our booking details quickly and with minimum fuss. All other staff were prepared to help out as and when required and were unfailingly cheerful.

Our room, No 3, was spacious and had one of the most comfortable beds we've slept on in an hotel. French doors opened onto a small balcony overlooking the gardens overall it was very pleasant and relaxing. The bathroom is modern and convenient with excellent shower pressure.

The restaurant has an AA rosette which in our opinion is well deserved. A table d'hôte menu complements the a la carte each evening so there's always a choice.

There are one or two areas where improvements could be made e.g. the grounds are in need of maintenance and toiletries are sparse but considering this is a three star hotel overall we thought it excellent value for money.

We'd recommend this hotel to anyone looking for comfortable surroundings and good food at a reasonable price.

There were 2 of us with a dog, we stayed on two occasions, on our way to a family celebration then on the way back home.
The greeting we had on both occasions were friendly and informative. Our room was clean, airy and with all the facilities you would need. The bathroom was a really good size, often they are quite small. We had two very comfortable beds with decent pillows. Each of us had a bedside table with a lamp and a coaster (so often a missed off item). There was a desk with drawers, one of which housed a hairdryer, above the desk was a large flat screen television, mounted on the wall, a chair was also by the desk. A nice large wardrobe which contained extra blankets in case you felt the duvet was not warm enough, plus an iron and ironing board. We also had a comfortable two seater settee. There was also a sideboard which housed neatly laid out mugs, kettle and all items for tea/coffee/chocolate. Also Wi-fi which was free.
We chose to eat in the bar, the food was well presented and exceptional. The staff again were attentive and extremely polite, nothing was too much trouble. There is a night porter which is very handy when your dog chooses it needs a ‘wee’ at 5 a.m.
After a very comfortable nights sleep and a dog walk, we had breakfast. There were cereals, fresh fruit (sliced melon, 2 different kinds) sliced fresh pineapple, a variety of juices and yoghurts laid out on a table for you to help yourself to. On the breakfast menu there was porridge available too. Main breakfast consisted of bacon/sausage/black pudding/tomato and mushrooms, and a choice of how you would like your eggs cooked. We also had a choice of tea or coffee, brown or white toast, all well presented and delivered. Our second visit was just as perfect.

Mixed reviews for this place. The restaurant was hardly busy, us and two other tables. Then had 2 staff front of house, one of which was a very nervous teenager who couldn’t stop shaking and made a lot of mistakes eg. Took a glass when it wasn’t empty, leant over the table to grab plates etc. The food itself was absolutely loved… had a duck salad for starter followed by a roast beef. Only offered red meat and didn’t give any alternatives until we heard another table got served chicken so we questioned them about it and got given chicken eventually. Food was very slow to be served. Drinks were extortionate, £4 for a pint of coke, no ice or fruit on offer to go with it. £6.50 for a single gin. Luckily we had a voucher so had some money taken off but all in all, still very expensive… was lovely food but wouldn’t rush to go there again!

Went here last week as a group of seven. Very disappointing afternoon tea and definitely not worth £25 per head. Plenty of tea but only three finger sandwiches each ( think two slices of white bread with the crusts removed and sliced into three). Two large bone dry scones ( although plenty of jam and clotted cream was provided). A flavourless mousse cake and a small slice of dry carrot cake and tiny, dry chocolate cake. We were given doggy bags to take over the remnants but unfortunately they didn’t improve with keeping. Wouldn’t recommend

The approach to the hotel in the dying light of day was very comforting. A warm welcome was also greatly appreciated after a five hour drive.
The hotel itself certainly needs a little remedial work done to the outside, however inside the hotel, it was clean and homely.
After being checked in by a charming young lady, who explained everything to me, I then made my way to my bedroom.
The room was situated on the second floor, which can be a little tricky to get to, especially with luggage. Inside the room I was surprised how spacious it was considering the price paid.
The bed was so so, the pillows a little hard, but overall the quality of sleep I had was ok. The bathroom, although a little tired ( stained bath, broken toilet seat, and various cracked tiles) was spacious.
Now I’ll move on to my title of the review “ A breakfast of two halves”. I stayed for two nights, and on the first morning my breakfast was “top drawer”. Ordered from the menu it was excellent quality , freshly cooked, piping hot, and they had black pudding!!….just love it!! I would honestly say it has to be in my top ten of all time English breakfast’s , and believe me I’ve had a few!
On my second and final morning my heart sank when I walked into the dining room. Two large tables of guests with screaming kids. But that wasn’t the issue. The issue was that I had to join in with them and have a congealed breakfast from hot trays, and also no black pudding!!! Why my expectations had to be lowered because two large groups were having breakfast was an utter letdown. I was a solo resident, so surely I should have been asked if I’d like a freshly cooked breakfast, just like I had on the previous day, and also to include Black pudding!!
I must also mention the reprices of drinks. This put me off from dining at the hotel. I like a bottle of wine with dinner, and especially rose. I certainly wouldn’t pay £30 for a bottle of Pinot Grigio, and also a double Bacardi and Coke ( and it was a splash of coke from the postmix gun) was £10.80. I have two bars in an affluent part of the UK and I think charging £8.75 for the same drink is a little daring!
Having said all this, which I hope the hotel may take on board some of my comments, I must mention Kyle ( do you ever sleep Kyle?) He’s certainly a worthy asset to the hotel.

This peaceful hotel is situated just a mile or two from Junction 15 of the M4, and it is an ideal base for exploring the area. We were only there for two nights but we visited Swindon's fascinating Railway Village and the National Trust's Ashdown House. We had a spacious 'executive' room with a very comfortable bed and two large leather armchairs. The bathroom had both bath and shower, and luxurious towels. Dinner was excellent - on our first evening we had smoked salmon, venison fillet and lemon tart, and the next night tomato and basil soup, pork loin steak and cheese. The chef clearly knows his stuff - it was all beautifully presented and tasted delicious. Breakfast was also very good. The staff were friendly and efficient. We paid £160 per night for dinner, bed and breakfast, which we thought was very good value indeed.

We found the bar area very uncomfortable- the wicker chairs are dated. There may be other rooms available as one was been used for a hen party when we were there. If warm the outside is pleasant enough
