Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Situated in a very rural setting close to Gatwick Airport, the hotel provides an interesting alternative to the large characterless hotels that serve the airport. The hotel occupies an extended country house with large grounds down a narrow lane. (It’s well signposted at the junction and satnav works well. There’s a large modern car park when you get there). The rooms will vary due to the layout of the original house. Room 105 consisted of 2 rooms, one the bedroom with shower en-suite and one a lounge with its own TV, etc, all reasonably furnished and presented. Breakfast was cooked to order. While close to the flight path, it was only in the conservatory breakfast room that we heard the passing planes: not a problem in the room over night or during the day. There's a dedicated phone for calling taxis to get you to the airport.

I was about to book the Waterhall Country Hotel when I read two recent reviews stating that the guests who booked recently did not get the Waterhalll Countr Hotel and were placed in a 'sister' hotel instead.

I decided to check this out for myself.

I call the Waterhall country hotel and was put through to the Trivelles Gatwick hotel. The front desk attendant confirmed that the Waterhall Country Hotel is currently closed. If you book online you will instead get the Trivelles Gatwick Hotel. Ie, not the same hotel or the same standard that you paid for.

This appears to me to be blatant mis-selling. You cannot offer one thing for sale (with photos) and then upon taking the customer's money, give them a completely different thing.

I would hope that Trivelles re-thinks this policy as it's likely to bring them a series of poor reviews from guests if they do not get what they believe they paid for.

So did I have any problems? No. The bed was comfy, the shower was warm and you got proper mugs with the kettle. No coffee though. On the other hand…

It was a good job I went alone. Once I’d put my suitcase down there was no room for anything else. Might just have been my room but it was tiny. The sink was 4x3x2 inches so every time I turned the tap on more than a trickle it went everywhere. The ceilings were so sloped that you can have to lean when sat on the toilet and the tv was in such a weird place that you have to half lay and half sit to be able to watch it. “Double bed” was about 3/4 of a standard double bed.

Even with the (2 very small) windows shut I could hear the planes up to every 10 mins. Would be a nightmare in the summer as there’s no aircon so you’d have to have the windows open.

Marked paint work and stained floor. Little things that wouldn’t have mattered so much if it was a nicer place.

Technically there was everything provided that the listing said it would be. But you can see why it’s so cheap for a night. The car park had a lot of rubbish dumped in it. I know that covid has changed a lot of things but how this place got 4 stars I’m not sure, looking at the requirements for 4 star hotel:

“Professional, uniformed staff respond to your needs or requests. Well-appointed public areas. The restaurant or dining room is open to residents and non-residents. Lunch is available in a designated eating area.“

I walked in and the first question I was asked ‘was have you paid?” Staff was in T-shirts and only there for 2 hours a day.

I’m not sure what rooms they show in the photos because mine was half the size. You get what you pay for here. It’s cheap because it’s cheap. Don’t think you’re getting a bargain.

Upon arrival around 6:30pm we tried to check in, he couldn’t find our details so had to go to the office to load it up as we only booked a few hours before. Then he proceeded to inform us our room is not ready and will be 10-15 mins so he can clean it? Although he was pretty speedy at doing so it still wasn’t to the standard you would expect. Once he came down and told us it was ready we headed to the room to be gobsmacked by the state of the decor and the fact he left the hoover in the middle of the floor outside the room (which was still there when we left swiftly at 8am!)
He was the only member of staff we saw also and definitely wasn’t dressed for working in a hotel….shorts, tshirt and flip flops.

The decor is outdated and needs sprucing up, mattresses need replacing (those in our room were rock hard) the carpet in the room is dark green and stained. The lighting could be better maybe a change to brighter lights as it feels like going to your nans fairly dark
The bathroom was small, the toilet wasn’t secure to the floor fully and when you flush it takes a good 10 mins to refill etc which in itself was noisy. The shower……I refused to use it wasn’t clean, no shower curtain just a bit of wall plus there was balls of hair from previous use. It was an electric shower which was disappointing for a country house I would expect a natural one. The light above the shower didn’t even have a bulb in!

The WiFi - was very rubbish and intermittent which made life hard trying to do my work which requires WiFi…..but then you’re in the middle of nowhere so your phone doesn’t exactly have signal either so no hotspot.

Tv was to be expected but with the added bonus of Netflix etc

Didn’t utilise any dinner or breakfast - cannot comment on that. There was what looked like a microwave in reception by toilets, it didn’t look clean

Free parking in their car park across the road, very nice new look expensive signs there for the hotel but the inside is aged.

At the current moment I wouldn’t recommend staying here unless it’s the last available place or it closes for refurbishment

Advertised as a country hotel - the location is pretty but the hotel is absolutely awful. Service non existent, only saw 1 staff member in 2 days whose English was poor and his attitude even worse. Paid for a supierior room and didn't get one, no heating except a small fan heater, no hairdryer (discovered that after my shower) and no staff present to get one from. The WiFi, which is advertised as 'fast enough to watch Netflix " wasn't even sufficient to send a text message over. Breakfast was nasty and cheap, 2 types of central and some horribly processed cheap bread for toasting. Again, but a single member of staff on site at all. This hotel, and I use that term very loosely, is clearly a shell if what it must gave once been but its now a cheap and not even cheerful building - I'll never stay again! I booked via Booking.com but I note the hotel have retrospectively reported they cancelled my booking because I didn't show up; presumably this is so I can't review on Booking.com as I did tell them I would be giving a very negative review of their establishment!

this was a nice spot in the country, clean and full english breakfast in the am. Also croissants and cereal and fruit.
However this hotel is on the Gatwick flight path and planes are flying right over head every 5 minutes and its loud and annoying. It stops from 11pm to about 7am.
It is quite isolated so you need a car or get taxis to go out for dinner or lunch. The host is there all the time and he is quite accommodating and helpful

Pretty odd experience, we needed somewhere to crash coming home on a late flight.

There was just one guy there, he was dressed in shorts and flip flops and took us into an office to take payment. It felt a bit uncomfortable. He wasn’t a friendly guy, I thought at first he was a taxi driver or another guest because he didn’t welcome us as such, just in for payment then to our room.

Take earplugs for the flight noise, I never saw any other staff while we were there.

Receptionist polite but he didn't advise of any breakfast options available, no lounge, no bar and room decor in bad condition with parts of wall paper missing, was told not to use certain sockets in room as it would trip electrics out in hotel. Carpet looked dirty and grout on tiles very poor. Overall not a pleasant experience

Basic, dated, uncared for hotel. Bit like a poor quality b&b without the welcome. Also some wierd bugs in rooms. Under flight path which didn't bother me. Only plus side was parking is free and is quite cheap and close to Gatwick airport for early flight.

Concerned about money laundering, will be reporting to my bank. Booked through expedia, thought I had paid upfront. On arrival, staff member was waiting at the open door, seemed like a nice touch, but rather than going to reception, took me into a cramped and cluttered cupboard office, which felt a little seedy and weird. He explained that I still had to pay, which I queried, but the expedia site wasn’t that clear, it just said the room had been reserved, so gave him my card, but he looked at his screen and told me the card had been declined ( the screen merely showed an error message) and he had no card reader which seemed especially weird….his computer screen had confirmation of all the card details from expedia and even said that the card was valid, but he insisted the card was no good and I should give him another card or pay cash… I don’t think so! He then wanted me to scan a qr code and pay a different company… I don’t think so. He said he was going to speak to expedia and made a call, not sure who to. Meanwhile, I went onto the expedia live chat and explained the situation. They were exceedingly helpful and told me they would call him.. and did within seconds! He told them things that were not true, they came back on live chat to me and said they would refund my booking to allow me to book somewhere else, I no longer felt comfortable staying there. I immediately went online and booked the Crown Plaza with the same card…!!! Definitley nothing wrong with my card.. definitley suspicious. Crown Plaza gave me a complimentary upgrade, so very grateful to this chap as I am now sitting in a luxurious room, but WILL be reporting it to my bank in the morning.
