Dartmouth House - Olney Location: A good location very close to the lovely Olney which has lots of amenities. Easily accessed from the motorway. Parking is relatively easy. Noisy. House: This is a period property with lots of lovely features but a few downsides. The living, dining, kitchen and garden areas are very pleasant with plenty of room for a large group. The kitchen is well equipped overall with lots of cheap and cheerful crockery and cutlery. I always bring things with me and was glad to have brought a washing up sponge (none supplied), gentle cleaning products (no cleaning stuff whatsoever supplied) and J-cloths. Smart TV in lounge allowed us to use our own Netflix accounts etc. There are some gorgeous furniture pieces in the house which has a lot of character. The bedrooms are reasonably nice though fairly basic and the configuration may fox families with young children. The bedding was good. The mattresses were okay. There was an awful amount of traffic noise even after midnight; all the bedrooms are affected. Slept badly throughout. There is only one shower which is on the ground floor adjoining a utility room and is very basic with weak water pressure and not great for a large group. The other two bathrooms upstairs are bath only. It is impractical to expect everyone to have a bath in the morning especially when there is no overhead bath attachment in either bath! How to wash hair for example?! The downstairs loo was cold and cobwebby and full of big spiders with no washbasin or bin or loo brush. You’ll struggle to park three cars on the property as advertised given the narrow entrance to the parking area further impeded by an overgrown bush, but there’s plenty of on street parking. No ability to control temperature of house but it was warm. Useful washing machine and dryer. Customer interaction: We loved the welcome cake and cava and the chocolate for the children. The owner would only issue the keys to the member of our group who had made the booking which caused some inconvenience but we understood it was due to concerns around subletting and insurance. The communication was a bit awkward overall and the OTT signs around the house felt a bit unnecessary too. The weather was rubbish so we couldn’t use what was clearly a lovely garden :-( Overall: A nice place in a great location, but there are many AirBnBs at this price range which provide a much higher standard of comfort and accommodation. However, to be fair, I accept this is a great period property and no doubt it is maintained with that in mind and perhaps listed property restrictions. I’m not sure anyone have lived there recently or the numerous niggles and a better shower situation would have been sorted out!!!

Elle, Rich, Phoebe and Romilly LegalMole Forgive my delayed response as have been away on holiday. Ah, we have now tracked your booking down as you gave us plenty of clues as we didn't actually meet you ( Marion booked the house for 6 adults and 7 children aged 3 years to 9 years) and I see you were part of the group. Marion was great and gave me a 5 star review and I gave her 5 stars back as she really looked after the house beautifully. I can still see her cute little boy with those lovely huge smiley eyes bringing me back the house keys with his Dad on departure day. So..... everything about our house is fully described on our web page, including that the three bathrooms only have one shower so I don't now why this was a surprise to you. Baths are great for young children? It's been a holiday house for 20 years and is certainly not "problematic" as per your title so I have to disagree there. Thousands of people have stayed there over those 20 years. We ensure everything is well maintained and working for every arriving group. It's a 400 year old grade 2 listed two million pound house and sleeps large numbers so we do not give the keys out to anyone but the lead booker. Would you do that if it was yours? I see from my records that you wanted to arrive first. It is not nice for a host to have guests trying to break the very miniscule amount of house rules that are set on the web page before they have even actually arrived to stay but fortunately this very rarely happens. We never put any cleaning sprays in the house as they are a danger to children and we state this on our web page ( your group had seven children aged 3 to 9 years) . We don't supply sponges either but your group received a large quantity of practical dishcloths, j cloths and tea towels, washing up liquid and dishwasher tablets as this is what "we choose" to select for the kitchen but your words suggest we provided nothing at all. I can assure you that the Spode china in the dining room sideboard and the John Lewis sets were not cheap and cheerful. There are also some alternative more basic selections that are ideal for the garden. 4 cars regularly park on the house driveway most weekends but we also offered Marion our hotel car park and outside marked bays on the road for you all too so that there was a selection of parking places to suit all preferences . Our road does go quiet at night. 7000 people do manage to happily live in this lovely town all year round and people have lived in the house for 400 years. I have never in 20 years seen a spider in the downstairs loo, in fact it is not a house that attracts spiders as they just can't get in. The house is so well insulated with stone walls over a metre thick and the windows are double glazed and with the house having three flooring levels they just don't seem to get in or climb up the vast height. You did not need the ability to control the temperature of the house because the heating was off as your stay was in August. I do remember you had horrible wet weather. There are no OTT signs in the house at all, just one by the bins advising about recycling ( and there is no pressure to take part in it either). Finally the cost equates to £50 per head but appreciate families with children are not having a good time at the moment financially. The 2 star poor rating you have given us on here was incredibly mean..

A very quirky, period house, brilliant for the kids playing hide and seek. Lots of steps, twists and turns. Very clean with comfortable beds. Beautiful garden and outdoor seating area under a veranda. It is on the side of a busy road, however the garden is very secure and we weren’t worried about the little ones getting out on to the road.

I stayed previously in June so had no doubt about re booking for a group of my friends. When we went to pick up the keys we were warmly greeted by Shirley, and given some helpful tips. On arriving at the property we were welcomed with cava, chocolates and handmade cake, just a lovely touch. We found the kitchen well equipped, decent size towels on each bed, comfortable beds with nice linen, plenty of toilet rolls/dishwasher tablets/tea towels etc. Very clean throughout.I have noted on previous reviews the mention of only 1 shower, which there is + 2 very good sized bathrooms with good deep baths. In the out house is a back up fridge + loads of storage room if you were bringing bikes etc. We had 6 cars between us ( not very environmently friendly) , plenty of parking in the drive and on the street right outside the house. The garden: Very private ,Sunny all day, shaded veranda, lovely lawn and beautiful planting with a little secret garden to the side. Ideal to drink gin and tonics! Olney itself , has plenty of pubs/cafes/2 small supermarkets / interesting little shops, easy to access other areas. There was a food festival on when we were here which was an added bonus. 2 things you would need to consider when booking, it is an old building ( which we loved) that has some steep steps to the bathrooms and odd little steps around so if anyone in your group has a mobility issue it would be worth contacting Shirley first to discuss. Also it is on a main route out of milton keynes so there is some traffic noise through the night. Personally I didnt hear it but a couple in my group live in quiet villages so were aware. Didn't spoil the break as they just used ear plugs, so everyone had a good nights sleep. Excellent weekend

The accomodation was clean with a beautiful garden, and in a good location. It was spacious enough for our family gathering, and overall we had a good stay. Unfortunately the stay was spoiled by the atrocious manner in which Shirley communicated with us. She was rude and passive aggressive in her messages, and incredibly condescending when speaking in person. We made simple and reasonable requests and were made to feel unwelcome. The only instructions we could find were for recycling, and it was poorly placed. Shirley gave clear instructions to text Shirley's mobile for enquiries, so we did, and were then shot down when we had questions. Perhaps if she had met us at the home upon arrival she could have answered our questions. We are not in the habit of texting hosts at 7am, but we were not able to get hot water from the only shower in a house accommodating 12 people and this would have placed a great delay on our plans for the day. I told Shirley that my "young cousin" was unable to work the shower. The child in question is actually 13 years old, never once did I mention his age and Shirley has jumped to the conclusion that this was a much younger child and claimed I should have "asked an adult before contacting her". Furthermore, three adults had attempted to work the shower before contacting Shirley and encountered similar problems due to the shower being old and faulty with the hot/cold indicators unclear and faded away. We asked about the outdoor lights and whether we were allowed to turn them on, which she deemed an unreasonable request and we certainly did not demand for them to be turned on. We simply asked where the switch was and whether we had missed it. Amazingly we were told that it is light until 10pm (not true) and that the 3 tealights provided would provide a sufficient amount of light (also not true). The outdoor area was dark and shaded, allowing hardly any natural light in and making it uncomfortable to eat our dinner and play cards outside. We sent 3 messages to the host during our 3 day stay, yet she claimed we were bombarding her. We were met by rude replies. The host then came to the Airbnb and refused to speak to anyone other than myself so as to challenge me, and refused to leave the house until we had spoken. She then proceeded to speak in a very passive aggressive and patronising manner, humiliating me in front of my family on my birthday. We were told that we were not allowed to contact her unless it was between 10am-10pm as it would disturb her. We asked whether there were ice trays available, she said she did not provide them due to "contamination" however, when I asked whether she had washing up sponges we were told that we didn't need sponges to wash up babies dishes, because, and I quote, "a bit of dirt never hurt anyone". This seems like contradictory advice, nor advice that I want or require from a host. We had only asked whether she had a washing up sponge because the only alternatives we could see were a J-cloth and a weathered old brush that looked like it had been used to scrub baking trays. Shirley then went out of her own accord and bought a bag of ice and some sponges and delivered them in a begrudging manner as if to say "are you happy now?", yet makes it seem as if she was our knight in shining armour. Regardless of this, my husband did thank her upon receiving them, but clearly it fell on deaf ears. We left feeling unwelcome and belittled. I've never been spoken to in such an awful manner, and had it not been for the horrible customer service, I would be giving the home a 5*.

Hi Varshita Vella I'm glad you found the house clean, spacious and with a beautiful garden. We have run the house for 14 years for holiday breaks and have been told many times by our guests about our efforts to think of everything, due to our experience and as you know, we are also hoteliers. This means that we have done our best to eliminate the need for guests to have to contact us during their stay about mundane matters as we have considered any issues that could arise and made them self explanatory as we want things to be easy for guests and for their stay to go smoothly. 99% of holiday houses do not have the owner close by, but we are just 4 doors away and you unfortunately abused and took advantage of our close proximity. All guests realise they only contact an owner for emergency help, for example, for a doctor or if something in the house has been broken but you used us like a 5 star hotel instead. We have had just over 20 thousand people stay at our house over the years and just 8 people have given us unhappy feed back on this website. It is impossible to please everyone and no matter how hard we tried you would never have been happy as your demands and expectations were completely outside of the scale of what we, or anyone, offers in self catering. Within minutes of your arrival you were sending messages about recycling rubbish. We place a huge laminated stand up card with clear details, on a low shelf, inches from the bin area in the kitchen so no, it was not poorly placed as you have claimed. You then demanded ice, which I very politely explained could be purchased from the shop just metres up the road. We don't leave ice in ice cube trays in the freezer because they might have been made by someone else other than ourselves. Next morning I was woken up at 7am by my mobile and you were claiming that our very easy to use shower was not working. It was indeed working but you claimed a child and everyone else in your group had been unable to understand it yet we have never ever had any guests stay at the house and struggle with it. You then demanded that the flood lights were put on that night in the garden. We do not advertise flood lights on our listing page and they are only for winter afternoon events held at the house when it gets dark at 4pm. You stayed the first week in August and it is light until around 10pm. We always put tealights on the outside table for our guests to use but a member of your family had moved them and put them on a kitchen window sill inside the house. As you had been conveying chaos to me since your arrival and in an attempt to halt your texts I confirmed to you that I could leave my workplace at 10-30am to see you at the house to check all the above was now clear. When I arrived your husband made a point of searching the house for you whilst I stood around for ten minutes waiting for you slowly to appear from a side of the house downstairs. I had waited patiently for you because I knew that I was unable to come back later on in the day as I was at work but you have now written above, amazingly, that I had arrived to challenge you and refused to leave until we had spoken! Just can't win springs to mind, and very frustrating for me and no consideration spared at all. After enquiring if you were now ok you pointed to the large quantity of tea towels and dishcloths that we provide for guests and said you wanted sponges for your 7 month old baby's plastic cup. I explained that you were provided with dishcloths/ tea towels/washing up liquid/hot water/ for washing up and you had a large Bosch dishwasher with dish tablets. I did not say a ' bit of dirt never hurt anyone' as you have made that up. Yes I did go out and buy a sack of ice and baby sponges too and no I don't recall you thanking me as I think I would have remembered. As you now mock and insult me with your knight in shining armour comment I now realise it was not appreciated.

We stayed at Dartmouth house for a number of months a while back and honestly could not fault this accommodation. It is within easy walking distance of many restaurants, pubs and shops. The house was always immaculate on arrival, always warm and cosy and everything was provided for a relaxing stay. The owner is a lovely lady and couldn't be any more helpful, thanks for having us.

We stayed at Dartmouth House as an annual Christmas get together. The house itself is fabulous and has heaps of character. The dining room is fantastic for a big group meal with plenty of seating - the photos really do not do the size of the room justice. The bedrooms are all spacious and the house is well equipped with everything you need. The location is also great, on the high street but with plenty of parking for a group. Olney is also a lovely market town. It would have been great to have a few more instructions and guidance about the house and expectations of what needs to be done on leaving the property, as is usually the norm with rentals. I can imagine if everything went well and there was no further interaction with the owners needed, this would be a 5* review. Please take note that the heating system cannot be controlled by yourself, which tends to be the norm for rentals and the heating is on for most of the day and off at 10.30pm - some of the upstairs rooms reached 25c+ as a result and some had no heating. Previous people renting the property must have changed the heating and it had not been reset. It would be great for this to be highlighted on key collection. We raised this with the owners and we were met by an unwelcome, unpleasant and abrasive response. We did hesitate booking the property due to historic reviews, please do take note of these and the response from the owners. Overall, beautiful property but if you experience a problem please beware.

Glad you liked the house but you've omitted to share with the trip advisor community about what you got up to during your stay here. We only met you literally once and that was when you got us up out of bed at gone midnight by hammering on our hotel front door. You wanted a second sack of wood for the woodburner didn't you? We had to get dressed and walk up the road with it at midnight, yes midnight. Did we get any thanks from you, well no, we didn't : - (

We stayed in Dartmouth House a few years ago for 1 week and we had a lovely time. So it seemed ideal for us to rent it again this year. The previous time we had stayed cost us 1200 pounds for the week, however this year it was 900 for 3 nights!!! But we still went ahead with booking it, as the venue is perfect for what we needed. Although we were curious as to what caused the price to go up so much, as there had been no modifications made to the house and if anything the garden looked a little more unloved as to what it had been. Our stay there was great, it was the owner who was the problem! Firstly there was a confusion with the check-in time and we arrived a few hours early. We had two cars full of bags and food and my two children with us. My 2 year old daughter was having a huge meltdown on the curb as we tried to figure out what was going on. The owner came out to talk to us and had zero empathy or customer service skills and tells us with a smile on her face that we are too early for check-in. I asked if we could at least leave some of the bags and food in the house until we could come back. We were told that due to insurance issues that it wasn't possible and we were sent off to kill 3hrs somewhere. When some friends of ours arrived from overseas also early. They went to find the owner at the hotel a few doors down, to see what was going on and to ask if they could use her phone. She was very rude and wouldn't allow them even inside the door way of the hotel, making them hang around outside with all their bags! And instead of allowing them to use the hotel phone she insisted on calling me herself. They ended up being sent them off down the road to wait at a pub and she didn't even offer to take their suitcases for them. On our last evening at Dartmouth House we had a late night and a few drinks as we wouldn't be seeing some of our friends again for sometime. At 10pm a note was slipped underneath the front door with list of things we needed to do before check out! Which included doing all the washing up, making sure that the dishwasher is emptied, cleaning the BBQ and picking up after ourselves. Which tells us that she has been watching the house or she wouldn't of taken it upon herself to leave such a note at 10 o'clock at night! She had also previously emailed my mother asking us to move the BBQ a few days prior so theres obviously somewhere she watches the garden from! The following day we did what we had been told and basically woke up early and cleaned for 2hours! Now I'm no stranger to traveling and renting but isn't the cleaning supposed included in the price?? After all you usually rent a place to relax and for these reasons right?! The owner showed up 2 minutes before our check out time and said oh you're still here! We told her we were just waiting for some taxis to pick us the rest of the guests and she said we had to get out of the house!! She actually made my friends who had travelled from all over, stand with their suitcases on the street in the rain! She even had the cheek to get one of us to take out the rubbish before we left! The house is great it does some love and could do with some improvements but the owner completely ruins the experience and we shall not be giving her anymore business in the future.

I was incredibly disappointed to read your review we don't want anyone to leave the house unhappy. As you can see from the reviews below the vast majority of guests who stay with us love the house, the location and the team that run it. If only you had told us during your stay that you were unhappy we would have endeavoured to put things right. With regard to you arriving too early on arrival day, you were actually 5 hours too early so there was nothing I could do as the house was still being serviced and this situation also applied to the early arrival of your friends in your group. The message placed through the letterbox at 6pm on your final evening is our standard polite reminder for the departure morning. The items listed are just standard self catering essentials and we expect no more to be completed and we find our guests never mind. We can always store rubbish for another week if it is overlooked being put out, as in your case. We do need the check out time to be adhered to as we have to get the house ready for the next arriving guests and I am not sure about your terms of phrases in how this was approached but we do find most of our guests are considerate of our tight timescales. I have noted that you will not be staying again but appreciate that we can't be the right fit for everyone.

Absolutely charming house. Stayed over the weekend. Old and quirky with a modern twist. Loads and loads of space. Plenty of rooms. Bedrooms and bathrooms. You can find a place inside or outside to relax. Plenty of seating anywhere. Cannot fault it at all. Even off road parking behind the gates. It's a credit to the owner. Would highly recommend to anyone. And a lovely touch. With the wine and chocolates on arrival. Thank you. Phil and Joanne and friends. 5 stars.

Great location, great house, great weekend! Lots of rooms separate from eachother to allow guests space if and when needed. We had 13 guests overall stay in the house over the week. Everyone loved the house and the beautiful garden! I was visiting Olney (where I grew up) from Australia and got married at the local St. Peter and St. Paul's church. Hiring the house meant I was able to have all my close friends and family around us during this special time as we were back for only 1 week. The house was clean and easy to look after. It has great character and grandness. The large dining room allowed us to hold our wedding breakfast and the garden was beautiful for a post wedding picnic. Couldn't have asked for a more beautiful weekend. The 1 and only down side is the shower. There is only 1 shower at a very low pressure. But even as a bride I managed fine ! I would recommend this house and location to anyone wishing to visit the U.K. Olney is a beautiful location with a nice relaxing holiday feel and Dartmouth house a great place to stay.
